Adult media suitable for 17 year olds as well?

We all should be aware that most movies, apps and video games designed for ages 18+ (adults only) are actually restricted to ages 17 and up. What's with that?

Depends on the country, really. In the Netherlands, you've either 16+ or 18+ on games, the UK have a 15+ rating, and isn't M or Ma 17+ while AO is 18+ in the US? Although apparently AO games are pretty much doomed so they get watered down to R/M or something, I'm not really sure. In any case, age restrictions are more like guidelines than hard truths. They give an indication of what sort of audience they are intended for, but it's not like an 18-year old can stomach much more than a 17-year old. Besides, things change from person to person. Some 12 year olds can quite comfortably deal with 18+ content, while some people in their forties might cringe at something that's PG13.

Well, being a year younger than demanded by ratings that vary between systems and countries and of which you don't even know who creates them, won't kill you. People are allowed to have real sex at 14 and experience real war at 17 years, but fictional sex and war are for those aged at least 18? Sure, makes sense, though...
