I was thinking about this when I was making my Roleplaying Character, Archon Sule

A bit much, I know.

 

If you read the long, over-the-top backstory I made (I was in the ZONE) you will know what I am talking about.

 

The ponies that you see pulling Luna's Chariot are like Pegasi, but they have they have Bat wings instead. I seriously doubt that they fit in with the Pegasi, so I think they should be declared a new type of pony in the show. I gave it a name: a Maluma (Malumai for plural). What do you guys think?

I based on the Latin for Evil ("Malum", I believe)

 

It dosn't mean they are evil, It's just a name I guess other ponies gave them and it stuck (I'm making this up as I go along, but it sounds good)

 

You should read my Roleplaying character's backstory (link in the first post) if you want to see my thought process in thinking this up. I included several Latin words (because I can)

 

ie: Chiroptera is the genus for bats

Actually, it was because Latin for bat (vespertilionem) was too long, so I went with evil (malum) and got to Malama and Malamai (PL)

 

The reason plural is Malamai is because Malamas didn't sound right

I was thinking they would be shunned by other Ponies, so they would not want to talk to ponies for that reason. They might act arrogant, but don't you think they would be envious of the Pony sociey (Happiess and friendship)? The Malumai society could be the opposite of them. They could be industrial, so they have a more sad, realistic verson of life and envy the Pony optomism.

In my head cannon, when I first saw them, I just thought they were regular guards who were wearing a costume and they probably used magic to make their wings look like Bat wings.

 

But anyways, I really like the species name you've come up with and I really like you OC's Backstory. Would love to Roleplay with that one.

I don't think those wings are even legit, much more a new species. Luna could easily enchanted some of the Castle's pegasi guards with bat wings for the Nightmare Night, it is indeed the glorious night of costumes.

 

Until there's an episode featuring them more than just Luna's personal guard, you can't really say that there's a whole hidden species of bat-winged nocturnal ponies

Your Missing the Point. Instead of asking Why are we expanding on a Bat-like pony race that is seen in probably in 10 seconds of the show, ask Why Not.

 

That's called being open-minded, that's what being a brony is about

 

Go ahead, ask why not, join our thread and help us expand on the Malamai (be nice about it, please)

BTW, this is a show about talking ponies, AND it is good. That the Biggest Why Not that started the Brony Community

And your 1st post clearly stated that "What do you guys think?". I just posted what do I think about the bat-ponies. It's just way too early to speculate anything, especially with such little information from the show itself.

All of Celestias guards are monochrome (white for pegasi, gray for unicorns). Lunas unicorn guards are also monochrome, a darker grey than Celestias unicorns. They're probably enchanted to look alike, comes with the helmet.

Wings of Darkness

 

The appearance of Luna's bat-winged guards piqued my interest when Luna Eclipsed came out. It was just one of a huge number of wild and crazy things the episode introduced to canon.

 

We could assume Luna enchanted regular palace guards to have bat wings as a "costume", but why would she? The plot of the episode was that Luna despised Nightmare Night and wanted to "change this dreadful celebration into a bright and glorious feast!" Aside from her cloak of bats (is that awesome or what?), Luna didn't appear to wear any sort of costume for Nightmare Night, and it's reasonable to infer that Luna, her chariot and her guards look that like normally.

 

When the episode came out, I found myself musing about the significance of the bat-winged guards and dubbed them (rather tongue-in-cheek) "Chiropterequi", after the order Chiroptera for bats and Equi for horses. That certainly doesn't roll off the tongue, but it's probably good enough "for science".

 

As we saw in the Season Two finale, Luna apparently lives somewhere other than Canterlot. So where, exactly, does she live? Perhaps the moon, perhaps in a dark castle somewhere. In any case, the "chiropterequi" may well be a race unto themselves, Luna's own pool of subjects. Like bats, they would probably hang upside down in their caves during the day, emerging at night to fly around and eat whatever it is they eat (insects?).

 

My Season Three wish list includes a Luna-centric episode that shows us where she spends her time, and perhaps unveils an entire civilization of her bat-winged pegasi. If it had aesthetics anything like those Luna displayed in Luna Eclipsed, that would be one epic episode. I can only pray.

 

In the meantime, my own pet name for the bat-winged pegasi has been "Nocturnes". Kind of silly, and perhaps not as poetic as "Malumai", but I like the sound, the way the pun fits in with the show's penchant for puns and, of course, the musical reference.
