Why was Spike summoned by the Dragon Lord calling?

This has SPOILERS from S08E11, just in case someone doesn't read or mind the tags and prefix, you've been warned.

So, after watching 'Molt Down' I was really glad that Spike has finally grown wings, and after thinking about the whole molt thing I wondered:

What caused Spike to be summoned by the Dragon Lord in 'Gauntlet of Fire'?

- Spike hadn't gone through his molt yet.

- No other wingless dragon was summoned.

- Smolder was not there when she's clearly older than Spike.

A hypothesis I've come up with is that the dragon migration from 'Dragon Quest' is a thing for winged dragons only, but since Spike never knew what being a dragon really was, his wonderings and curiosity led him to travel by foot and ended up with him being a part of the migration. That migration might be one of the dragon rituals that make any dragon "worthy" of the Dragon Lord's summoning and so, even though Spike didn't even have the body to really compete for the bloodstone scepter, he had been already proved worthy of the Dragon Lord's calling.

So... What do you think about this? Do you have any other hypothesis about it? Why do you think Smolder was not summoned? (In universe explanation). What do you think about molts and their meaning in dragon society? I'll be glad to read your thoughts on this matter.

Cheers.

Maybe Spike was summoned by the dragon lord because of his close proximity to the dragon lands. I think that maybe at that time, Smolder just happened to be in a different place, as there's more to the entire planet than just Equestria. The dragon lords call maybe just happens to affect dragons that live in a close proximity to the dragon lands, so dragons like Spike who live in nearby Equestria would be affected by this call. Now I think Molts is maybe like the dragons from of puberty I mean, "bodily changes", what else could it be? :orly:

It also means that it's time for the dragon going through the molt to find their place in the dragon society, because as they said in the episode, it's just kinda a natural part of growing up and going off on your own, which is something everyone does at some point :sunshower:

Perhaps dragons have a breeding cycle which is why all of the younger dragons besides Smolder look about the same age, and she happens to be the latest generation. It would fit in with the need to migrate. Spike was hatched by unicorn magic so his birth could be way off from the timing of the breeding cycle.

Dragon growth is also effected by their environment, which is shown in "Secret of My Excess" by Spike's extreme growth.

We have absolutely no idea how old the egg containing spike was and it's been long hypothesized that the goal of the egg hatching test isn't actually to hatch it but a way of observing failure and maybe even raw magic output by sheer determination. If this is true, then it explains why Twilight is so special, and why her special talent is magic, because she's able to do what no other magic wielder can, and of course why Celestia becomes her mentor directly, rather than just having her be any other student at the School for Gifted Unicorns. It may also explain why Spike was able to grow so big in so short of a time, because it was reflective of his true age. With the egg being a sample for teaching at the school, rather than nesting under normal conditions, Spike was unable to hatch at the time he was naturally meant to.

This along with his lifestyle among ponies may have stunted his growth/aging to the point that at the very least, he's at Ember's mental age level, but physically he's under Smolder's. This is why Spike was eligible for the Gauntlet of Fire, but Smolder wasn't.

So the upper image is how things turned out for Spike living with ponies, and the lower could be what would have happened if his hatching occurred when it did, only if he were raised among dragons.

@King of Canterlot The thing about proximity is that all wingless dragons nearby should have also been called, which doesn't seem to be the case. About the molts, of course it is puberty, but I meant how do they change a dragon's status in their society?

@SharpWit Spike's magical hatching does seem to have been an anomaly among dragons, it makes sense that his physical development would be different from other dragons because of it.

Do you mean like how the individual dragon itself gains a place in society? After going through the Molt, they probably have to ya know, work for their place in society......... like any other person/pony/creature would have to do? (Expect for maybe Prince Blueblood, he was just born into his place)

Something I just thought of. Smolder says that Spike's Molt "takes the cake" for those that she's seen, and she references a brother going through it, but not herself. There's also no mention of wings during her explanation of what's happening. These leads me to wonder whether obtaining wings are a part of the molt, or if Smolder has gone through it either. In dragon quest, there was also confusion to spike's lack of wings if he wasn't freshly hatched
