How do I DM an image?

I can post a picture when making a topic, or a status feed update.

but i can not do it while i am DM'ing someone, is that how it is?

If I remember correctly, if it's an attachment, only subscribers can attach images in a DM. I think it might also be the same way with linking an image.

You cannot directly upload into the Private messages IIRC that feature was available for subscribers and donors before don't know anymore.

Easy way to do this is to post topic in the testing forum and upload it there and then link it to the Private message

As @TheTaZe said, attaching files in direct messages is reserved for subscribers with $10 tier or higher.

The perk in question is highlighted in yellow.
It is worth noting, that the first perk is no longer relevant. As far as I can see, the correct information is as follows:

• 120x120 avatars. This is the normal size and subscribing will not increase that at all.

So consider that perk not being there at all.

 

Linking the image will work fine and this is actually my preferred method. I kind of dislike using attachments, other than to quickly post stuff while on mobile, as switching windows on phone and stuff isn't really convenient.  

What I could suggest is to use Imgur.

This site offers reliable image hosting. I have an account (though it's not required, but I suggest to make one) there for years now with over 3100 images and it never failed me. 

All you'll have to do is to just follow 3 easy steps:

1. Drag&Drop the image to your album:

2. Click it and get its Direct Link:

3. Paste the link in the text editor (on forums, that is) and voila!

Actually you can use attachments that you yourself have already used elsewhere on the forums. It's called "Insert Existing Attachment" under "insert other media" drop down menu.

Example: I used a picture of Thorax on a topic about him. After that I can use "Insert Existing Attachment" to attach the same picture to a Private Message

Users cannot attach images directly in personal messages. Subscribers and Donors can as a perk for supporting the site financially. That said, you can use any hosting service (including attaching the image in a post in the Testing Forum) such as imgur to link your image in the personal message. Heh that sounded funny and I have to admit I've been wondering on that one too for a long time. 

Considering, that you can, let's say, cheat the system anyway, by putting attachments in the testing forum, I kinda don't see a point in that limitation. In my opinion, it mostly negatively impacts the user experience, rather than being a perk anybody would go for, maybe with some exceptions. 

But well, I generally try to avoid using attachments, so I can't complain.  These caused me so much pain back when there was an off-site image limit, that thankfully they have got rid of. 

I mean, it's not that I'm suggesting anything, nor complaining, I'm just randomly sharing some thoughts I had for a while, don't get me wrong.
