Somnus noticed that Ruby wasn't doing well, he knew Ruby told him to stay out of this, but he was afraid Ruby would die if he did nothing. Even with the spear being enchanted, it wasn't  for something this big, sure it could pierce the dragon, but it was not big enough to go far. He'd have better luck stabbing an elephant with a toothpick. He had an idea though. Somnus took the top of the spear off and plunged it into a rock, making the enchanted spear into an enchanted hammer like he did in the training yard. Maybe he land some hits and distract her so Ruby could stand a better chance in this fight.

"I'd say something clever, but I don't know if you can even understand me."

Somnus slammed the hammer into the larger dragon's tail. Somnus did this in a way to inflict enough pain to make the dragon angry enough to attack Somnus so that Ruby could get a hit.

 

The hit didn't do really anything to visible, and the reaction from the mother was similar to getting annoyed by a mosquito or something, but it distracted her enough for Ruby to gather herself and get free from the grasp of her mother...by breaking her 'finger'. After that she charged back to the fight, and though she didn't get grabbed again, it wasn't perfectly smooth, as she did get hit and crushed some times, and the spines of her mother also scratched her quite a lot as she constantly went for her upper body due to a bit less thick armor there. The two dragons shouted what could only be guessed to be insults at each other as this went on.

He noticed was doing a bit better, but he wasn't sure how long that would last. He needed a better way to distract her. An idea quickly came to mind. Maybe he could trick the larger dragon into thinking he was more of a threat than he really was. His logic behind this was that he remembered Ruby mentioning that making someone think they would be caught by surprise would put them on high alert, so if he could make her aware of him, then she may have trouble concentrating where she needs to and therefore maybe giving Ruby an advantage.

Ruby used this to her advantage, but again not in a way that Somnus probably had guessed, since she flew to grab one of the trees that the wind had pulled up, and pushed it into her mother's mouth as she was getting ready to breath fire towards her to block her view. This didn't do any damage, but as expected when something gets stuffed in one's throat, it did disrupt her focus, which again, Ruby could use to her advantage, and she did.

But Ruby hadn't been lying when she at some point said her kind is durable, as both of the, regardless of clearly being injured both, were still going with seemingly full strength, but the one advantage Ruby had started to be visible, speed, because smaller is always faster, and she used it greatly to her advantage, even though it always wasn't successful.

Ruby managed to land on top of her mother's neck, and as she did, she took hold of one of her mother's horns, just one, and started pulling, and that combined with her mother moving her head around trying to get her off, she managed to rip it off, but for now it seemed it made her only angrier, and Ruby ended up back to dodging. she shouted to Somnus "One more distraction, lighting or something, I need a second so I can finish her off."

Somnus quickly grabbed a bunch of clouds, which would begin to pour very heavy rain along with lot's of lightning. But that didn't mean it was no help, as the rain made seeing and smelling harder, and the constant lighting made hearing pretty much impossible, and it was a shock for the big dragon that a tiny creature like Somnus was able to control weather.

Ruby charged at her mother holding the horn she had ripped off, and again went for the mouth, since it was really the only place she would be able to penetrate enough to do damage, but soon was slammed away again by her mother, but she no longer had the horn when she was slammed away, in fact, she had managed to get it deep into the mouth of the bigger dragon, who was now gasping for air and trying to get the horn out.

Ruby slowly got up with triumphant smirk, and shouted something in her language, before turning towards Somnus "It's over, now we need to just dodge if she tries to attack, because unlike the tree, dragon's horn easily penetrates our skin, and I probably don't need to tell you what happens when you get a big wound in your throat."

Her mother did try to swing at Ruby few times more after getting the horn out, but eventually she collapsed, after which Ruby went to grab the horn, before collapsing herself, she was awake, but she didn't look as great as she usually did. Ruby said "It's a spell yes, but it is tied to the type of magic we have, and assuming you're Wyvern, you have different type, thus you'd need different spell." "And not only that, it's not exactly something you can just learn by hearing it once, it needs practice."

"But don't worry, like I said, my wings are fine, and the little pain they still had is drowned by the new pains, so I should be able to fly to at least the end of the river."

Ruby still wasn't able to recognize indirect signs of unhappiness, even if they were obvious, all she could hear was lack of pride "If you think you're not good, you won't be good. If others think that, you need to prove them wrong." "I do need to admit that it was clever to use my mother's lack of knowledge against her, even if it wasn't on purpose...though I of course will never admit that it helped, since that would mean I didn't kill her alone."

He was still confused about one thing.

"I still don't understand why she was around here though. You don't think your kind is on the verge of discovering Equestria, do you? Equestria is already about to go to war against the bigger wyvern kingdom, the last thing we need now is a two front war."

Somnus was really hoping that Ruby's mother was the only one.
