Lack of chemistry between certain ponies of Mane 6

There are 15 variations of the Mane 6 pairing (non-romantic), however, I haven’t seen a significant chemistry between Pinkie-Rarity, Applejack-Fluttershy. (even in Viva Los Pegasus, they were just bland.)

Rarity and Rainbow Dash kind of overlaps with Rarity with Applejack (and less dynamic). Pinkie with Applejack kinda seemed dull on Pinkie Apple Pie, they just treated each other the way they do it to any other ponies.

Is there any two of the Mane 6 you think needs some unique chemistry or an episode together? Am I missing something between those two?

  • Twilight Sparkle : basically every other characters are defined and introduced by the relationship with Twilight Sparkle
  • Pinkie Pie : she is impossible to be bland, but since she treats everybody special, some of them aren’t as much special. Her and Rarity has less dynamics, her and Applejack too.
  • Applejack : she might seem like the most vanilla of all Mane 6, but it isn’t true. She has a strong personality just as Rainbow Dash. But her reaction to others can be stuck in a certain way. Her and Pinkie Pie has less things to contrast unless it’s about work vs fun, practicality vs unconventionality. But those are what the two have against other ponies too.
  • Rainbow Dash : her and Rarity can be overlapped with Applejack and Rarity. Other than that, she has the most dynamic chemistry among the mane 6.
  • Rarity : there are three ponies who doesn’t care much about fashion. (Rainbow Dash, Applejack, Pinkie Pie) That relationship is represented through with Applejack, which is the best chemistry. (Look Before You Sleep is an episode entirely revolves around this relationship.) Her with Twilight Sparkle is quite the mild version of the fashion conflict. Fluttershy is a good combination. Both are interested in feminine beauty but one is shy, the other needs attention. One can be jealous, the other can be too modest.
  • Fluttershy : she has a dynamic relationship with others, usually by a contrast of personality. But her and Applejack are so nice and easy-going ponies, there are not much happening. And when it kinda happens at Bats!, it didn’t quite worked well. Applejack’s stubbornness can look like the only aspect to contrast with Fluttershy, but when it happens, it works like an act of violation against Fluttershy’s tender personality.

Yes, you are right. It's also the reason why when Spike and Applejack had a second of chemistry happening, the fandom desperately grasped on it and shipped those two on such a scant foundation.

Friendship comes in many forms. Sometimes it's unclear why a relationship exists but people find connections in interesting ways. One of my current online friends is someone I don't seem to agree with much on, we have vastly different backgrounds and interests, and we spend a lot of time prodding at each other or exchanging insults, but we get along great because we respect one another to some degree and enjoy each other's humor.

I agree.

Twilight Sparkle: Seems to be ok with all of them. Better chemistry with Spike.

Applejack: sort of awkward with Fluttershy, doesn't take Pinkie's disrespect on personal space too well but otherwise they're fine. Her best chemistry is with Rarity, also great with Rainbow Dash when they joke together but awful when they're competing.

Rarity: seems ok with everypony but clashes with most of them when her dramatic self goes overboard. Best chemistry with AJ.

Rainbow Dash: she's ok with all of them, clashes with AJ and Rarity when Dash is too hasty and sort of reckless. Best chemistry with Pinkie Pie and Spike (although she needs more interactions with him to be sure), great with AJ too when they're joking.

Fluttershy: sort of awkward with AJ, too defensive with Pinkie Pie when Pinkie is behaving too hyper. Best with Rarity and Rainbow Dash when they're helping each other.

Pinkie Pie: She's usually too hyper and random to have good chemistry with Fluttershy or AJ. Best chemistry with Rainbow Dash.

Spike: he's ok with all of them, awkward with Rarity when he's trying too much to get her attention. Best chemistry with Twilight and Dash, although he needs more interactions with her.

Weirdly enough, a considerable amount of the concept art for The Movie featured Spike and Applejack together. Most notably, Applejack was shown to comfort Spike after Twilight was kidnapped in a heartfelt way. Shame that they were scrapped.

Personally, I think Dashie has good chemistry with everyone, given how much their personalities tend to clash. Dash and Pinkie Pie, Dash and Applejack, Dash and Spike and Dash and Rarity tend to be my favorite pairings. Rarity too, to a lesser extent.

The most disappointing thing about the movie was there were no portion of Applejack and Fluttershy, others like Rarity and Rainbow Dash just had a ‘moment’, the only ones mattered as a character were Pinkie and Twilight.

If the movie delved into more of the characters and their relationships instead of trying to make it ‘epic’, then it would have been much more fantastic. It is sad that I have to suspend my expectations for MLP contents to get satisfied.

And even then Rainbow Dash's "moment" only served to screw over the main cast. I still think the movie is pretty decent, but it really was Twilight's story and Twilight's story alone. There are rumors of one or two more theatrical films being released, if they're true, then I hope they learn from their mistakes and make something that's more character driven.

There was a discussion like this in the Adventure Time subreddit a year or so ago when discussing the status of the Adventure Time theatrical movie (which is probably canceled by now). Someone made good points that might be relevant here, since the movie was going to be a wide-release theatrical film, it would have to cater to audiences who've never even seen Adventure Time, so it's highly unlikely that the film would've dealt to much into the characters pasts, because random movie goers wouldn't know enough about the cast to really follow, or even care.

It could've been similar here. Notes left in the official art-book imply the film was going to be more character driven that dived into the established lore of MLP but expanded on it. Instead we got a relatively safe, but decent enough adventure film that didn't really fit the lore of MLP to appeal to more audiences. But at least it expanded on it in interesting ways and introduced interesting characters like Tempest and Capper.

Sorry for rambling!

The reason for the lack of chemistry is because the writers are running out of ideas the same characters have been used for pretty much a decade. It's pretty stale now, so not much else can be done, other than ending the show, which I hope comes sooner than later.

>Running out of ideas

Dude we literally didn't get a RariTwi episode till this season. And there's plenty of pairing that for some reason are underutilized(Rarity and Pinkie, Pinkie and Fluttershy, Rainbow and Twilight, AJ and Pinkie Pie). There's still plenty of places to take them

I don't think mane6 really have any chemistry with anyone.

Twilight - no chemistry with anyone - she always make her partner look like a dumb henchman who is much stupider than her - Rarity in Friendship University, Dash in TestinTesting 123 etc

Fluttershy - she is mostly patronised by anyone or being a pushover by Dash. Her only real chemistry is with Discord

Applejack and Rarity really have some "opposite attract" chemistry with eachother and thats it. Applejack/Dash rivalry is really just annoying

Pinkie Pie is really just an odd one in the group and doesn't stick with anyone as she is mostly just providing random gags and visual humor rather than express any feelings or dynamic with anyone from mane6.

No one in mane6 group has the same chemistry with eachother as Trixie with Starlight or Discord with Fluttershy. Mane6 are mostly just distant friends that hang out than really close friends who share eachother problems and secrets

I think there’s a good blueprint for most pairings. Here’s a few I’d love to see more of:

Rarity+Rainbow Dash, as in the first act of “Rarity Investigates!”

Rarity+Pinkie Pie, as in “The Gift of the Maud Pie.”

Rarity+Twilight, as in “Friendship University.”

Fluttershy+Applejack, as in certain “Equestria Girls” shorts.

Rarity+Applejack in any scenario where they’re not bickering constantly, I swear to god; think “Sisterhooves Social.” I don’t enjoy their dynamic at all as is.

I think Fluttershy+Applejack, Applejack+Pinkie, and Fluttershy+Pinkie are probably the least defined. C’mon, show, get on that.

I honestly don't see a problem with that, because:

  1. It would be difficult to make the Mane 6 interesting if they were just so similar to each other.
  2. I don't entirely see it. Sure, there's a couple of underutilized pairings, but I don't see certain members not clicking. They all click, but some not as well as others (like the show specifically pointed out with Rarity and Rainbow Dash in "The End in Friend").

Two of those "least defined" pairs already have a lot of episodes so far to date. All I want is something, anything at all between Fluttershy and Pinkie (in fact, I'm really dying to see an episode between just them because after 8 seasons, they still don't have one!). The rest, definitely no more for these reasons:

1. Any pairs that happened in this season didn't in Season 7.

2. Fluttershy and Pinkie both haven't gotten as much appearance time this season than the rest of the Mane Six or even Spike, and possibly a few of the Student Six.

3. Most of the 15 possible Mane Six pairs already have at least two episodes throughout the series. They can't just keep having more episodes over and over!

Okay, cool, but all I care about is having fun with this show, so I just wanna see specific dynamics I enjoyed in the past happen again.
