Pinkie's lack of understanding in "The Maud Couple"

If you recall in "The Maud Couple". Pinkie was getting all frustrated with how strange and dull Maud's new date Mudbriar was being. Yet thoughout the episode, Pinkie completely missed the point regarding why Maud and Mudbriar have such fondness for each other. Maud and Mudbriar are both stoic and bland. Yet throughout the episode she's the only pony who doesn't understand that.

Personally I found it to be a very hilarious case of laser guided karma for Pinkie. I had a feeling she was going to receive it sooner or later.

Was this Pinkie being dense or was there some other reason for not being so trustworthy of Mudbriar despite his similarities with her "fantastic" sister. Maybe that was part of the joke.

What do you think was Pinkie Pie's problem throughout the episode?

Pinkie has a very poor intuitive understanding of other pony's emotions in general. It's the main flaw that prevents her form being a perfect altruist.

And Maud/Mudbriar have a very different, almost opposite kind of attitude to  Pinkie. Pinkie and Maud grew up together, so they're used to each other - probably one reason Maud is arguably a bit more personable than Mudbriar, as well. But without that bond of love, a pony like that is practically designed to grind Pinkie's gears.

However, one of Pinkie's strong points is her ability to incorporate and act on new information even without totally understanding it. So once she realised that, somehow, Mudbriar made Maud happy, she learned to deal with him, because what makes her sisters happy makes Pinkie happy... or at least, able to grudgingly tolerate.

Part of Pinkie's character is being like an innocent child, and children hate change. Children don't look at situations like that objectively at first, they just act the way they feel.

Pinkie's used to Maud and seems to be able to understand her better than most, despite her lack of facial expression or outward emotion. Remember in her first episode where Pinkie says she's never seen Maud so excited when Maud isn't showing any outward difference? Pinkie can read whatever subtle changes are there to tell how Maud is feeling usually, she can't do that with Mud Briar who she's only just getting to know, and he's also kind of annoying in a way Maud really isn't with his whole "Technically" shtick. In a way, Pinkie is reacting to Mud the same way a lot of ponies might react to Maud herself, again, back to the first Maud Pie episode where most of the ponies were pretty put off by Maud, Pinkie likely would have been among them too if she wasn't already so familiar with Maud as it was.

 She takes it even more to an extreme though because Mud isn't just a new friend Maud is introducing, he's her boyfriend, she's dating this guy, and Pinkie is so used to being able to read Maud in a way, it's almost like she's blind to just how similar the two really are.

I felt for Pinkie and kinda felt the same way that she was as it was supposed to. That's why the episode fundamentally worked for me. Pinkie Pie does see lot of things with rose tinted glasses, and there are obvious faults on pinkie, but technically, Maud has shown lots of redeeming qualities that justifies her blunt and cold character while Mudbriar started out (seemingly) being annoying, pretentious and oblivious to the nature of his disruption. Maud never bothered others even once, she is just blunt and extremely neutral. If Maud didn't love Mudbriar so much and they didn't make such a good couple, I wouldn't like him as much to be honest.

In a way, it's an extension of Maud's own debut lesson. "Even if you can't be friends with somepony, you can still allow your mutual love for a third party to bridge the gap a bit."

Pinky finally met somepony that she couldn't stand... which was great imo.
