Also smell and taste are connected so sometimes you don't have to smell something to know what it tastes like. Tasty digestible sugars ✓sodium hydroxide ❌ but yes, don't eat soap. It's not such an unusual substance to try to eat, either. To the extent that it's got a special name called sapophagia. Babies eat soap quite a bit and people can get weird compulsions to eat it if they have certain sorts of nutritional deficiencies (like iron?).
