Why does pasting default to rich text?

I've recently been using pasting to work around some keyboard issues, and when using this site I've found it quite inconvenient that every single time I do so, I have to click "paste as plain text" instead or have my message from there on ruined. I'm not even sure what rich text is or does, but it really complicates typing.

Rich Text is like plain text, but contains values for special characters and fonts. Not sure why that would complicate things though. Can you be more specific as to what it does to your text?

Rich text should mean that it preserves all the formatting, fonts, and links that were in the original. That's kinda been the standard on the internet for a long time for forums like this one.

Just use Ctrl+Shift+V to paste and you'll get plain text.

Ah - hearing this helped me figure out the problem. I must have been using text from a white-on-black site, which came out as white here.
