CastletonSnob 3,079 April 24, 2020 Share April 24, 2020 https://www.theverge.com/2020/4/24/21234205/nintendo-account-hack-nnid-breach-security-hacking-attempt Quote Nintendo is disabling the ability to log into a Nintendo Account through a Nintendo Network ID (NNID), after 160,000 accounts have been affected by hacking attempts. Nintendo says login IDs and passwords “obtained illegally by some means other than our service,” have been used since the beginning of April to gain access to the accounts. Nicknames, date of birth, country, and email addresses may have been accessed during the breach, and some accounts have experience fraudulent purchases. Nintendo is now recommending that all users enable two-factor authentication. That’s something you should be using for all of your online accounts. Passwords are now being reset for affected accounts, and Nintendo is disabling the ability to log into a main Nintendo Account through a NNID. These older NNIDs were used for 3DS and Wii U devices. Nintendo’s latest Switch console uses a newer Nintendo Account system, which until today could be linked to these older accounts. As a result, Nintendo is discontinuing NNID sign-ins. https://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/49396

Rarity Gemstones 213 April 24, 2020 Share April 24, 2020 I surmise that this would have been shut down regardless, given the shortcomings of the Wii U and the oncoming retirement of the 3DS. - .... .. ... / .. ... / ----. ----- ----. / .... .- - .-. . -.. / ... . -.-. - --- .-. Splashee 28,566 April 24, 2020 Share April 24, 2020 The last thing Nintendo wants to deal with. This is very bad news.
Ganondorf8 11,385 April 24, 2020 Share April 24, 2020 This doesn't surprise me in any way given how Sony and Microsoft have had their own problems along these lines. It's just that it was now Nintendo's turn to experience it, unfortunate as it is.
Kyoshi Frost Wolf 41,793 April 25, 2020 Share April 25, 2020 I love how when I finally go to setup 2 step verification on my Switch, which they highly recommend now, it doesn't work at all. I follow all of the instructions, I install Google Authenticator on my phone, I connect the account, then it asks me to put in the code from the authenticator and it always says the code is incorrect. Thanks Nintendo, I can always rely on you fumbling somewhere. If there is one thing Nintendo is definitely consistent at, it is screwing something up. They really screwed this up now. OCs: Flow / Love Bloom
