I wondered to what extent G4's immense popularity was due to its own quality, and to what extent was this due to the conditions of the time that made many so receptive to G4? That is, if G4 began in 2020 instead of 2010, would it still have been immensely popular?

I'm sure that if G4 came out in 2020 rather in 2010, it would still be pretty popular, but I think the high popularity it would've gotten would've seen a decline much sooner with how both the internet and our economy have just had all the life sucked out of them in recent years. Friendship is Magic was always subject to fierce criticism from older fans who were even super critical of Seasons 2-5, seasons that are now considered part of its golden age, and was never a ratings darling, but it was impossible to escape from on the internet and at the stores back in the day.

You'd probably be surprised to know if you are not already informed that the episode with the highest ratings recorded in FiM history, Twilight's Kingdom (Part 2), one of the most loved episodes of the show that came out in 2014, the best year in history for MLP toy sales, only got 790,000 viewers. The episode of Tell Your Tale with the most views by public record has 7.7 million views on the official MLP channel at the moment, the most criticized episode of it has 1.9 million views on the official TYT channel at the moment, and its second season opened up to 1 million views. Cable TV and YouTube are highly different landscapes with the former being literally dead now, but back then, FiM's views were always notably lower than the views of something like a popular Nickelodeon/Cartoon Network show and not only is the internet less lively now, YouTube videos usually get the vast majority of their views at the time when they are new.

What kept G4 going for so long was definitely good merchandise sales. It's not a lack of popularity that did this to TYT by any means for sure, it's a nightmare situation for the market.

Is there any chance that G6 will revive the fandom or at least be better than G5, or was G4 a fluke, and MLP will never be that good again?

I think the franchise will never go back to its glory days again unfortunately, it's something I've been saying since 2023, G4's success was a anomaly,  the franchise's path now is to go back to its roots of how it used to be in the days of G1, G2 and G3, popular amongst kids only, with very niche adult fandom, others here already gave good reasons for it too, though what they said doesn't necessarily mean that the franchise will never be a hit again, but that's at least what I believe, I hope I'm wrong too, so the fandom will soon relive those wonderful times again, but for me it's apocalyptically unlikely.

It's sad but then I felt that generation 5 was in decline since the movie. The movie was fantastic and I had so much optimism about the future after watching it. I'm sure most fans were the same. There was so much potential after that film but almost none of it was realised. The world and the characters never got the exploration they deserved, and the connection to gen 4 amounted to little more than a couple of disappointing cameos from Twilight and Spike.

After the film came out, it felt like all gen 5's energy and potential has slowly been seeping out...and this cancellation feels like the logical conclusion. If I was to describe generation 5 in one word, that word would be 'disappointing'. :scoota-sad:

At least we'll always have generation 4 to rewatch. And maybe gen 6 will be good. But I'll make sure to lower my expectations this time.

I completely disagree. I don't find the movie that great in retrospect and the shows and comics were awesome. The most recent TYT episode was absolutely phenomenal and makes the show's abrupt cancellation all the more painful.

I love the "A New Generation" movie but I feel like someone made a mistake making Gen 5 exclusive to streaming places like Netflix and YouTube.

Hasbro has announced that there will be a G6. I don’t hold out much hope for quality

Source? I am aware they said "this isn't the end of the journey for My Little Pony", but so far, to my knowledge, they've not clarified exactly what they meant by that or made any official announcements about G6.

It's been strongly hinted that something is in the works for 2026 (the Year of the Horse) but nothing specific has been announced--yet.  It's probably some version of G6.

A few minutes of research would have told them how hard it is to make money with content for kids on Youtube.

I would like to remain cautiously optimistic about what Hasbro has planned for the next year or two, but it's hard for me to have any faith in them after this.

I’m watching the episodes of Make Your Mark that I haven’t seen and even though I know what they’re

talking about now because of Tell Your Tale it’s been pretty overwhelming and confusing going back to MYM.😵‍💫

The movie is fantastic. It successfully introduced the world and the new characters. It was funny, had catchy songs, looked great and from what I've seen it even appealed to people who normally wouldn't have any interest in Pony. The movie was everything I wanted it to be and my opinion hasn't changed in all the times I've rewatched it.

It's still just exposition for the world and new characters at the end of the day and I would rather watch the world and characters I'm attached to evolve than go back to ninety minutes of exposition and dream about "what could've been". "What could've been" didn't happen, therefore, I moved on.
