Lady Rarity Pony 4,892 December 15, 2011 Share December 15, 2011 I don't know about you guys but when I look around the forums now I notice a lot of discussions have turned into short 1 line and at times useless responses. The lack of effort put into some of the posts are really beginning to make the forums look bad in my opinion. Some threads have a page(s) of short, back and forth responses that could have easily been summed up in one or two well written and detailed post(s) in the first place. Some posts are same thing said a couple pages earlier and other responses are ridiculous (and no offense but stupid) responses that look like YouTube comments... I know the correct action to take when sighting spam is to place a report but in many cases I cannot fully determine whether the discussion is considered spam or not and I would not like to flood the admins with what may end up looking like false reports should it have not been considered spam. I've been taking extra time to make sure my own posts are meaningful and productive to the discussion and I hope others do the same. What do you think? Doctor XFizzle 8,670 December 15, 2011 Share December 15, 2011 If the one-line, short response is still adhering to and discussing the topic at hand, I think it's okay. Now if it's an off-topic exchange between two or more members in a topic, then that's questionable. 1 MLP Forums' resident timelord, sports dilettante, and purveyor of wit and humor~*Traveling Timelord Nonpareil*~
Ezynell 2,037 December 15, 2011 Share December 15, 2011 The main problem in my opinion, is multiple page threads filled with thoughtful responses are usually either in between two people or TL;DR material. I don't find problems with short snippets as posts for they are usually a easier way to get your point across and actually read. 2 GAK

83awsm 234 December 15, 2011 Share December 15, 2011 (edited) Ive seen instances where people can express alot in a short amount of words, but I can also see where you're coming from. I typically tend to write more than I'd like when it comes to expressing ideas, since it may tend to get boring, but I guess that’s just the way I am Edited December 15, 2011 by 83awsm Awesomeness = at least 20% Cooler. Lady Rarity Pony 4,892 December 15, 2011 Author Share December 15, 2011 (edited) OK, so it seems we all agree that a post can be productive and small but what about the rest of my post? Or was that TL DR for you Some posts are same thing said a couple pages earlier and other responses are ridiculous (and no offense but stupid) responses that look like YouTube comments... Doctor XFizzle 8,670 December 15, 2011 Share December 15, 2011 As long as the responses aren't a reportable offense and are replying to someone else's thoughts or the topic, I think it's okay. You don't want to stifle a person's ability to be quirky or funny. The board thrives when everyone can express their personalities equally. 1 MLP Forums' resident timelord, sports dilettante, and purveyor of wit and humor~*Traveling Timelord Nonpareil*~
Swoop 2,278 December 15, 2011 Share December 15, 2011 (edited) The main problem in my opinion, is multiple page threads filled with thoughtful responses are usually either in between two people or TL;DR material. Well, there goes all my posts! To put it simply, It's all just common sense. Some people post concisely for the sake of emphasis or to add an sense of wit to their response, while others just seem to post for the sake of it. Perhaps one day we'll live in a perfect world where we'll all be able to convey our thoughts and opinions coherently and succinctly, but until that day comes, we'll just have rely on our own discernment and post accordingly. Of course if a topic seems to head astray, you can always quickly report the matter too, even if there is some doubt as to whether it qualifies as spam (better to raise a false alarm than to allow a potential issue to develop), but for the most part, we just have to be accountable for our own post etiquette. I've been taking extra time to make sure my own posts are meaningful and productive to the discussion and I hope others do the same. What do you think? Don't feel bad for the admins - I treat webmastering as a full-time job, anyway. A report of a "spammy" post that we deem not to be spammy after all will take us a matter of seconds to process. It is considered a false report when you are clearly submitting reports to troll us or waste our time - e.g.: you had no good reason in your mind to actually report it. If you had even an inkling of a reason to report it, we'll see that. We'd much rather receive a few reports that we don't take any action on than a derailed thread consisting of off-topic one-liners. With that said, post length is not directly proportional to post quality. Being concise isn't always a bad thing. If you really are so concerned about so-called "post whoring", I've got a little experiment we could try: hiding the post counters for a period of time - say, a week. I'd like to hear some of your thoughts on this. 2 Avatar credit: robinrain8 Signature credit: Kyoshi

I'd like to hear some of your thoughts on this. I am a firm proponent of killing post counts. Also, as someone that actually tries to put a little thought into most of my posts, I can say with complete honesty that few things annoy me more than seeing someone respond to a post with "TL;DR"; it's pointless, looks stupid, contributes absolutely nothing to to the discussion at hand, and it downright immature. With that said though I don't have anything against short posts, as long as they actually contribute something. It's when people treat the forum like a private chat room that it gets on my nerves.

I honestly don't feel like it's that really big of an issues at this time, I never see it ! some people may just be overly sensitive , and keeping a post counter inspires people to post which keeps the forums active and gives some ponies something to strive for so I really don't see the problem ~

While everyone seems to post with good intentions sometimes the post counter will begin to encourage spamming. I'm sure the top posters will post just as much without the counter. Feather Spiral 1,892 December 16, 2011 Share December 16, 2011 We sometimes stray off because... well, there's only so much that can be said about a certain topic. If someone shows up way after all aspects of the subject have been discussed, as I've just done in the "The herd is growing" thread... all they can say is "I agree with X and Y", which is not really the best way to contribute to the discussion. In my case, when I stray off-topic in a post, I always make sure at least part of it is still about the discussion subject. Except when I have nothing to say that hasn't been said countless times, then it feel redundant to be on-topic. I would be interested in this "post prostitution" experiment Postitution.
