Hey guys,

 

I'm planning on writing a fan-fiction on one of my own OCs, but feel I need to brush up on my vocabulary and grammar.

 

So have I decided to read a bunch of the best/Top-rated fan-fictions out there. Can you suggest any ones except Antipodes, Final dreams of a Filly and Past sins.

 

I don't like reading grimdark/gore fics, so cupcakes and fallout is out of the question.

If you need to brush up on some vocabulary, I'd actually read some Shakespeare, scriptures, or really any kind of older writing that includes lots of crazy words that are hardly found anywhere else.

 

And like Frenzyhero stated, Sweet Apple Massacre is truly a beautiful tale. I rarely cry at literature, but that one scene with Sweetiebell and Big Mac's just so perfect it created a waterfall of tears. I don't say this about much, because I don't believe that anything could ever get this high up in status, but Sweet Apple Massacre truly is a masterpiece that should never be forgotten.

And like Frenzyhero stated, Sweet Apple Massacre is truly a beautiful tale. I rarely cry at literature, but that one scene with Sweetiebell and Big Mac's just so perfect it created a waterfall of tears. I read My Little Dashie, and in my own opinion didn't find it that emotional. Then again I did read it while constantly being distracted, so I'll give it another read.

Personally, I don't feel. So, I was running with everyone else's words.

 

You really should read Sweet Apple Massacre though. It is the PINNACLE of fanfiction writing, plot, concept, character developement, and many other fancy words! And I swear to god, FALL FOR THIS! I CAN ONLY BE HAPPY IF YOU DO THIS!

I started reading it last month... I'm still not finished with it(I'm on last few chapters though). I don't mind though, a lot of what adds to the length is background info/lore, and most of it very interesting imo. The story is very good though, I would highly reccomend it if you can find time to read it.

And in the arugment of "atop" or "on top of", I am of the opinion that the former flows better.

 

To be honest, if you wise to expand your vocabulary I'd suggest reading some older works not fanfiction.

Bababa suggested that you read Shakespeare and I would wish to add H.P. Lovecraft as well.

Bigger than any normal novel. The longest novel I have read is only 1,469 pages. Fallout Equestria is over 2000 pages.

 

That's the only reason I'll never read it. Because I won't be able to have a life.

I, like others, really recommend my little dashie.

Some of My other favorites that I would higly recommend are: Tiny Wings, Her Majesty Walks, and Bubbles (warning those are sad stories)...oh and A Rose Reverie (very good if you like plot twists)

 

I know you said you don't like grimdark fics, but if you want to try the ultimate one I'd recommend "A Fun Day!"...it's 10x worse than cupcakes but extremely funny if you have the right sense of humor.

Allegrezza is best shipfic. Read it after reading something sad, as it is a very happy story. What amazes me most is that this happiness seems realistic; there's really only one plot hole that annoyed me.

 

Spoilers for, well, spoilers:

I thought the author's excuse for the two first going to dinner was a bit unbelievable. I find it hard to see Octavia inviting Vinyl to dinner as a sort of cooking contest, but there could easily be excuses made up. In addition, the pacing of the story sucks at times and, when the awards ceremony announcer says that Vinyl is Octavia's fillyfriend, it's not clear whether this was said sarcastically or not. There was no uproar from the supposedly conservative audience, implying that either Equestrian high society was more tolerant that Octavia had previously believed or that the audience had assumed the word "fillyfriend" was a joke. Finally, the story does not have a central conflict that runs through it, but I feel that this, surprisingly, does not cause problems. While that may seem like a lot, those are all the things I dislike about Allegrezza.

). And did I mention that Allegrezza has 7th best rating (should be higher) and 2nd highest number of likes (ironically it loses to another Octascrath fic) of any shipfic on FIMfiction?

Yes! An opportunity to recommend my favorite fanfiction to date. Eternal by device heretic. Read it. It is very well written, but what makes it really great is this: the characters are everything to the story. It has a plot, and a good one, full of mystery and high adventure. But the plot and the setting pale to the characters in the story and their psychological story arcs. I have never seen Twilight Sparkle, Princess Celestia, and Princess Luna given such depth. (I read it and was promptly ashamed of my earlier efforts at writing an adventure fanfic. I was also terrifically inspired to do better, to make my characters as layered and interesting as possible.) Anyway, that's my recommendation. It's a bit long, but don't be put off by that. I didn't read it in one sitting, but by the time I was finished with it, I was grateful for every moment I spent with it.

My recommendations are World Without Rainbows by uberPhoenix and Reharmonized Ponies by alexwarlorn.

 

WWR is a neat alternate universe fic based on the question "What would happen if Rainbow Dash did not perform her first sonic rainboom?" What I like most is that I can actually believe the characters. The Mane 6 develop in a way I can understand happening. Also, there are two universes; the first being regular Equestria as we know it and the second being the alternate universe. It's well written and the character development that takes place nicely guides the story along.

 

Reharmonized Ponies is also fantastically written. Ponies give their Points of view of the episodes from the beginning of Season 2. It is about how Discord traumatized everypony and how everypony is dealing with the aftereffects. The Mane 6 discover more about their connection with the Elements of Harmony and what the elements mean. Also, get ready for your head to hurt because this story is not just about Equestria as we know it. The author works in EVERY generation of My Little Pony into one big universe and story. It's crazy, but it does work. This is not on fimfiction I don't think, just google "reharmonized ponies" and you'll find it. There's also a couple of youtube videos of audio recordings done for the fic.

I'll leave a suggestion here that Vexx suggested I read. It's called Memory Pending by Kiroberos. Definitely one of my top rated fanfics I've read to date.

I would also suggest you follow ValorousSpectre. He had a series on Fanfiction, but I guess he's rewriting it in Fimfiction. I personally can't wait until he's finished it, because it was definitely at the top of my favorite reads ever.

Oh, I forgot to say that there is an awesome fanfic that i just remembered. Its called A Precious Rainbow.

Its an alternate ending to cupcakes. It's basically where Applejack saves Ranbow Dash before it's too late. The story then gets better and better. Its on the EqD page for cupcakes. Its the alternate ending by milesprower06.

Seriously, you should check it out.

 

The whole series by the guy isn't just called A Precious Ranbow, Its got a few more after it, too.
