Ignoring Haters - Not The Best Solution

I just want to make one thing clear, I'm doing this as a disscussion (i guess i should have said this earlier), haters dont matter that much to me, it's more for the sake of keeping a conversation and giving exaplmes. sorry if you didn't want me to reply.

I've seen this discussion come up many times, that's why I'm not too fond of it. As a metalhead, you know the violent, anti-christ terms the whole community gets flagged for just because of the actions of a few. Any retaliation made by one person will just be used as ammo to hit us back. That's why we find ignoring (I ad-lib) "Those inferior to understand the true tastes of the purest music ever conceived by man, devil or dio" much easier as opposed to a conversation going along the lines of:

"THOSE GUYS ARE DEVIL WORSHIPERS!!!"

"No we're not. Only a few are, and they have their own genre of metal to go express themselves in."

"...THOSE GUYS HAVE MUSIC SPECIFICALLY DEVOTED FOR SATAN!!!"

And such. As for that last part - that was me just guessing how you were gonna reply. Don't apologize.

Well I've never been really fond of metal so I haven't had the honor of that experience, but I see your point, and I respect it, but I think your case is slightly different from the matter at hand, therefore I believe you make a good argument, but it's just not the same because internet conversations don't go that way, and if they do, THEN you walk away. because most haters are just trolls and if a troll does that it usually comes with "How'd you like that b!tch?". The kind of people I'm refering to dont believe that what they are doing is right, they think it's fun, so, as previousley stated, I try to make them reconsider.

Bullied for 7 years. Old formula worked just fine for me.

Well.. I was bullied too.

And so, I´m a girl and the bully was also girl, like 5 years older; so the it was more of mental than physical bully. Ignoring didn´t work. I rather tried to avoid her, but once she and the other girl captured me and a friend of mine, it was a final straw. I was really angry because she took my friend into that bully. In the end, it was friends who helped me. My friend once saw her on the school event and told me "is it that girl that captured us and was saying shits to you?" .. and another friend of mine started to scream at her and laugh at her. She was now alone and even only one small girls screamed at her, and there was another two little girls, just silent, she was like a scared rabbit. She never captured me again. Just once I met her by the pool and she tried to laugh at me, but as I wasn´t scared anymore, I started to deffend myself and she just walked away. She never annoyed me again.

So, there might be something true on "Laugh at your fears", and also, the bully should taste their own medicine. It always helps.

And sorry, I tend to type a lot things that people don´t care about but I think It kinda follows the topic

So you somewhat agree with me?

Yes, you can take it as an agreement ;)

Trust me, it won't make them madder, they will think they won, they will think you are weak for not trying. you need to understand that they don't think like us when it comes to reason. I mean specificlly getting mad or not. they won't get mad or get their senses straight if we ignore them. their mind or at least persona doesnt work that way (I think, I'm not a psychiatrist)

You're way overthinking this lol... It almost sounds like you're saying they aren't human. Not trying to get them to change when they don't want to is a strength, not a weakness, regardless of what they think; and not getting a response from you might not make them rage, but if enough people did ignore these petty little attempts to deliberately make people who like this show mad then I guarantee you they would stop and reassess the point of what they're trying to accomplish.

Well, I posted this in this thread for a reason, so granted, I may be ovethinking things, but in/for a good reason.

And vise-versa, nobody should face a hater head-on by himself. So if enough people overcome him (or them, it could be a group) it would have the same effect. or at least somewhat of the same effect.

I do see your point there, and do partially agree with you. When I happen to stumble across a hater, and have some spare time, I usually try to react politely to them trying to strike a discussion. It does not work often, I admit it. Few times it worked so far. If they are completely closed and ignorant to my efforts of discussing, I say to myself Love & tolerate and leave them alone, hoping they will get more mature over time.

eeyup, I completely agree, and that's half my point, it's about trying, and not ignoring.

it's just not the same because internet conversations don't go that way, and if they do, THEN you walk away. because most haters are just trolls and if a troll does that it usually comes with "How'd you like that b!tch?". Go on music.failblog.org, look up a few metal memes made, and look at the comments. Calling them stupid fags isn't helping getting through to them, reasoning doesn't either.

And again, the same thing applies to my example. But in my example the people who do it either think its right, fun or both. And if a person is dead focused on trying to get a point across, whether it be a hater or a troll, making them reconsider is near impossible.

And for the love of god, stop censoring yourself.

Well I have nothing more to say, so let's conclude, I both agree and disagree. All you said are good points, but I'm gonna have to stick with my argument, you need to try, it does help, and nobody said anything about calling names.

it does? i meant overcoming by sticking together... not by attacking. Well i guess what i said sounds like i encourage flaming, but i didn't mean it that way, it might get flamed (replying) but it's not my intentions so... i guess you can think about it on your own and see for yourself if it works. this is just a forum, nopony's gonna get flamed here, so what i say may not work, but at least try. sorry if it's a little confusing. Nah I get what you're saying, but look at it this way... Whether people actually hate you for watching the show or just want to get a rise out of you, something in their mind is making them think that it's an alright way to be or an alright thing to do. They want you to reply to them, that is their entire purpose of them making comments about you in the first place is it not?

Like in your example with Cartman, Wendy's explanation didn't solve anything because Cartman wasn't looking to be informed on the matter to begin with nor did he care. It is the exact same thing here, and no amount of explaining is ever going to change a person who has no intention of changing themselves.

I think it's also important that ignoring isn't mistaken for taking no action at all. Ignoring someone's insults and not letting them get to you is proof to them and to yourself that you value what they're insulting more than their opinion of them. Whatever they do after that is up to them but their words only have as much power as you give them.

Ask yourself if you're really trying to change the hater's opinion, or if you just want to drown out their disapproval - and if that's the case then ask yourself why you value their approval at all.

I have alot to adress here. first off, no, they do it because they hate you for watching the show, and if not, you can tell that after you reply and they reply, because by then, if they do do it because you like the show, they'll be like "whatever this is gay" and leave.

second, now that i think of it, you're probably right (or I'm just overthinking agian, which is likely), but that doesn't mean you can't try, there is a reason to replying, and that is making your stand (best done with other people).

third, ignoring, as I said, is a way of dealing with things, but it doesn't solve anything.

and lastly, I couldn't care less about whoever's approval I'm getting, especially when it comes to people who try to insult me for no good reason. But it doesn't mean I'm gonna take it and shut up.

In my opinion, South Park isn't the best place to find life advice :P

Really, though, I don't really encounter haters that much. And when I do, they're easy to ignore.

Counter-Trolling seems to work in most cases.

For example, when a hater calls me "homosexual/faggot/cum dumpster (No offense to homosexuals that may take part of the community, just giving an example) I just reply with "It's not my fault that it feels so good!". Then they proceed with their rambling to which I reply with pictures of ponies with the caption "U mad" or my all time favorite, a picture of Luna from the Nightmare night episode, in which instead of saying "the fun has been doubled" she is saying, with the gorilla munchies face: "the jimmies have been rustled!".

And when they bring up the "Love and Tolerance" I just reply with: "I don't actually follow that trend/philosophy. In the show they punish the evil with terrible punishments, like stone imprisonment, or exile in the moon.

I'm sure the second you reply to them it will start a big flame war. I think it's best to ignore them. What can they do to you? If you don't think that solves it then just be friendly to them. The least it will do is catch them off guard.

I think that there are some situations in which stopping them can help (bullying is a great example) but Internet Haters are a completely different thing. Usually, they are just so ignorant and stupid, that reacting just fuels them even more.

Most of the time, Internet Haters are 'doing it for teh lulz', meaning they are doing it to get a reaction, and laugh at it. Sometimes, saying something simple like 'well, that's your opinion, and I respect that', but that doesn't work for all trolls, sometimes, you'll find a troll that is so eager to russle your jimmies, that the only option is to just ignore them. Usually, they have a stupid reason to hate on something, such as jealousy, or in the case of FIM, breaking the social norm. These reasons are just stupid, and can either be finished off by ignoring them, or dropping the statement that I mentioned earlier. Sometimes, hating on something that they like can work, but that's something completely different.

tl;dr trolls are stupid

I like the idea of banishing the hater's someplace....

I'm not sure where we would send them though...

So what I'm saying is that a hater isn't a reason to get angry, and ignoring means you don't want to deal with them, which means you are at least somewhat annoyed, which means you're somewhat angry.

Ok I know this is your opinion...and you are welcome to it and I will respect that...but I don't accept this one bit. If people have the courage to walk away and not get into it with a hater, then I find those people to be wonderful and confident. Here's an example or two

Forget for a moment that I like Howard Stern, alot of people on this forum don't. That's awesome, free will and all...

So it's no secret that Howard did a fine job of bashing bronies by saying we're all cloppers. Some folks got upset by it. That to me shows me that Howard did a great job of getting to some people. Now other people here simply said either

a. I listened to it and it didn't phase me (in which case I find them to be very strong people who just could n't care less)

b. They said the heck with it and didn't listen because it wasn't worth their time. (again...strong people who said I am not going to let Howard rain on my parade

Neither a nor b are necessarily annoyed or angry...rather they chose to say "whatever" and move on. That shows me that these are strong people who do not let things get to them.

There is a world of difference between a person who shuts down because they got busted on and a person who says "I really don't care. It doesn't change me and it doesn't affect me." So to say that these people are annoyed or angered is a heck of a presumption whether it is opinion or not.

A few things: first, I have no idea who Howard Stern is. Second, I'm not saying that not caring is the so-called "issue", I'm saying people are taking it as a solution to ignore, even if you do care (some bronies care) and I don't think it's a good solution because it doesn't solve anything. And maybe I did exaggerate a little with that statement, but I was thinking of how I would take it, which is obiously not how all bronies will take it, but if that's the case they might as well make their own posts right? Basiclly, I did some thinking and figured I'd start a disscussion about it, that's all. Read it agian if you find it confusing.

Well, I haven't really met with any haters beyond this one friend (who isn't even serious, I think), so my opinion will probably be worth nothing.

Either way, if it's a hater on the internet, I just leave him be. They have their own opinion (however misinformed) and since this is the internet, and I can easily avoid him/her. I don't feel any need to try and make them open minded. A bit selfish yes, but it gets me out of talking to a hater, which is the mission.

A bit more tricky in real life, now I'd imagine a hater being someone who actively voices his opinions of bronies without provocation. I wouldn't be friends with this person (not because of the brony subject specifically, but because randomly bringing up ponies, in a non-pony related context can get annoying at times, I'll admit). If it's more of a bullying situation, I just ignore them. Really, I don't feel like their opinions merits a response, so I just ignore them. This is pretty easy, and if it doesn't get physical, most can do this (I presume). Since I have no intentions of making this person more informed, I just let him be.
