Tagging somepony outside of thread

Hi all!

In my short but busy time here, I have noticed something that I think might be useful if it hasn't already been brought up (or if it's possible right now), I didn't see it in any search results.

Anyway, I have seen a few topics that mentioned other members that weren't already in the conversation and I didn't see a way to bring them in without having to send a PM to invite them. So my question is: Is it possible to have method of tagging another user so that they know they are being included in another conversation? Facebook, Google + and Flickr do it (to name a few). Is this possible? Would anyone else be interested in something like this?

It's an intriguing possibility, but with most things it can be prone to abuse too (like tagging people for no reason for a thread they're not even a part of, spamming a certain user by tagging them in everything, etc). I've had a couple instances lately where that feature would have come in handy. In the big picture, overall, not a lot of instances where it would be a useful feature, but it's interesting.

Depends on if the IPS Boards even have that function too.

But could you see it being that abused? I mean there are always going to be some here and there, but for the most part, this is a fairly well behaved forum. In fact wasn't it you that suggested to someone who had a question about joining the military, that they should talk to Ol' Sarge? (if not, sorry) That would been a case you could had tagged me (ie: a la Google+ : +Ol' Sarge) and it would have popped up in my notifications "DoctorXFizzle mentioned you in a post", which I would have been able to join in. But you're right, it all boils down to is IPS supports it,

Edit:

It was Devin that recommended me.

Here, most likely it wouldn't be abused because this place does pretty decently, I just have a tendency to default to worst case scenario when it comes to ideas because it's the internet where anything goes :P

And no, I don't believe I was the one to direct someone to you, but that's beside the point lol. I'd be for this option but as you agreed, it depends on IPS having it.

Huh, that's an interesting idea actually. We're becoming more like Facebook everyday.

It would certainly interest me to see if I get talked about places I don't venture to, but I don't have a strong preference either way with this one.

IP.Board doesn't support any kind of member tagging out of the box, but it sounds like something that can be added by a hook. In fact, I'm almost sure I've seen a hook for this lurking around in the IPS Marketplace before, but I couldn't find it.

My concern is whether it might result in excessive notifications. What if you quote someone and tag them in the same reply? The tagged member will receive two notifications for the same post.

Personally, I think inviting someone to a thread via private message feels a bit more personal than "BronyFan9001 tagged you in "What is your favorite pony?". Implementing this feature would almost certainly require a custom hook to be developed, and our resources for such are a bit limited.

I understand the deal with resources. I mean the quote button serves basically the same function, just a bit more clumsy. Most the quotes I have seen used were primarily to call someone back to a conversation. I just thought I would ask, thanks. Edited by Ol' Sarge

Hm, custom development may not be necessary after all. Check out what I just found in the IPS Marketplace!

That hook looks like it adds an @mention feature and enhances the quoting system. I'll put it in for discussion with the staff. :)

@@Feld0,Thanks!! I noticed that the box now pops up when I highlight text. I am using this feature right now in this reply. So we'll see if it worked.

SOOOME Bitch!! It works!!! Okay, quick notes for those who are playing along.

1st - if you want to quote just a certain part, highlight the text and a balloon will pop up with choices of "Quote", "@ Mention" or "X"; choose "Quote" and you will get the standard quote box we are used to seeing, but with just the text you highlighted.

2nd - If you just want to alert someone that you are replying to their post, but without any quotes, then highlight just enough for the above mentioned balloon to open up, then choose "@Mention" and click. This will produce a string that when posted will look like "@Member's Name" and will be highlighted and clickable. The member will receive a notification like"ds8 has mentioned you in recently added post"

So there you go, try it out kick the tires and see if you like it. If you do, please thank the Admins, Mods and Feld0 for listening to the masses!
