Saethwr 12 February 23, 2015 Share February 23, 2015 In my opinion, this is an example of an Alicorn OC done perfectly http://mlpforums.com/page/roleplay-characters/_/saethwr-r7867 This was the friend I mentioned and his OC is fantastic and great to roleplay with. Um....hi I guess^^ Well I was gonna be an overpowered fire type OC until Tilt talked me out of it.
Prince Firemane 309 February 23, 2015 Share February 23, 2015 I have no problems with making your own Alicorn OC, I have one of my own. However, most new writers for the fandom will choose an Alicorn for their OC, at least at first, because they are the most potent vessels for putting one's ideas into the world of Equestria. However, the folly with that is that Alicorns are very difficult to write for, they must be handled very delicately. It can be done in a story, but I'd say that Alicorn OCs should not be used in a RP, as it tends to introduce a level of character hierarchy that can be rather disrespectful to the other RPers. The thing that irks me with a lot of Alicorn OCs is that they have absolutely no reason for existing. Every canon Alicorn has a specific reason for existing, a Patron that they hold governance over. Celestia's Patron is the Sun, Luna's is the Moon, Cadance's is the Magic of Lovers and Twilight's is Magic itself/the Magic of Friendship. Governing these forces is their primary reason for existing. Another thing that irks me is non-Royal Alicorn OCs. I'm sure it could be done correctly, but it just makes no sense to me for an Alicorn not to be Royalty. When Twilight was ascended, she was immediately given the status of Princess despite the fact that she wasn't born with the title nor did she marry into it. Though technically she was an honorary Princess when Shining Armor married Cadance, but still. Twilight's acquesition of the true title means that Alicorns equate with Equestrian Royalty. We We all know of the mary sue traits and we all know that they're not mutually exclusive; Earth Ponies, Pegasi and Unicorns can fall down this path just as easily as Alicorns. But with Alicorns, new writers love to tack on insubstantial surface flaws in order to make them 'more relatable', which in turn only makes them more of a mary sue all together. Now, I am a firm believer that even if a character hits every mary sue nail on the head, they can still be a truly great character. It all depends on the individual writer. But the one 'flaw' that I see with many Alicorn OCs is a supposed great hindrance or outright inability to fly or cast magic. Now, this can be rather realistic, Twilight had never flown before and thus had trouble controlling her new wings. The same could be said for an Alicorn who was originally a Pegasus trying to cast magic. However, my problem is when Alicorn OCs never break this problem, Twilight, with practice and diligence, can now fly decently well. It creates a much better character and story arc for a character to grow and overcome these problems than it does to have them just sit there and brood on it. Now, I'm on the fence when it comes to biological Alicorns. It certainly makes sense when and OC is the child of Celestia, Luna, Cadance and now Twilight. But it seems like a cop-out as to hand-wave why this Alicorn exists instead of coming up with an actual reason of substance. I'm not judging anyone who has an Alicorn OC like this, I'm sure that this situation can be done right, it's just my personal preference. Wow, I can really write a wall of text, can't I?
Tom Snyder 4,112 March 25, 2015 Share March 25, 2015 (edited) Alicorn ocs? I don't know if they made their ocs an alicorn then it would count as a princess/prince which I don't like, I don't fancy them cause the creators go to overboard with the OCS power then it'll be too powerful like celestia so I don't really like them Maybe so. But alicorns aren't that powerful, they have vulnerabilities too. Twilight had her moment, but that was only because she ad the power of all 3, cadence wasn't that strong as an Alicorn, but they can become stronger through training and patience. Nopony is born as one, but its just opinion, we know absolutely nothing about them. So saying their OP is an overstatement, when in reality, they have weaknesses. Shou 100 March 25, 2015 Share March 25, 2015 I agree that people should be able to make any thing they want however, I am not a huge fan of the marry sue thing most fan made alicorns seem to be. 1 "Silly shrine maiden, your two-colored powers are a mere twenty-eight-point-five-seven-one-four percent as powerful as mine!"
