Derpy Dash 233 August 12, 2012 Share August 12, 2012 So, just been wondering lately, how many of you are in band? Concert, marching, or both. If so, what do you play? Also, if you can, post a video of your band here too. I play trumpet in my high school marching band. Here's a video: This was from our championship game at the University of Memphis. We got 2nd place.

Clover Heart 978 August 12, 2012 Share August 12, 2012 (edited) I started playing alto sax when I was in 5th grade - standard age to start playing for my school district. I was in band from then until I graduated high school. Through junior high, there wasn't really any difference between the bands, except the separation of different grades. When I was in high school, anyone could be in concert band, but only 11th and 12th graders could be in symphonic band. I chose to stay back in concert band, for various reasons. In junior high, we were made to march in the high school homecoming parade, but there wasn't actually a marching band, per se. In 10th and 11th grade, I was in actual marching band. I quit because it interfered with my other classes. I'm 24, now. I still play my sax from time to time, but I haven't played seriously since I graduated high school. In marching band, specifically, there was a lot of drama between the flutes and the color guard at my school. Did anyone else have that? Twiliscael 3,960 August 12, 2012 Share August 12, 2012 Due to me being in football, where the marching band plays, I can't be a part of it. I am a part of the concert band though. I'm a trombone pony, I'm by no means great but I definitely ain't terrible. I tend to take the high road, get stoned, and fly low . . .
Envy 6,159 August 12, 2012 Share August 12, 2012 I'm not currently in marching band. Hopefully next year I will be, though. I have the instrument (tenor saxophone) now. I've been a part of various band classes for like 12 years now, though. I won't be this semester, which is going to make me sad, but I can live with it. I think... I play the bassoon. Although I used to play the trumpet too, and that's what I originally marched. Everything needs more woodwind!

I WANTED bassoon but my teacher didn't have any of the parts for it -__- No marching bands around here. I play multiple instruments so I'm involved in a lot of other stuff though Edited August 12, 2012 by Sylvanas Windrunner (PDS)

Dusty Soul 2,611 August 12, 2012 Share August 12, 2012 I play in the Jazz band (guitar) and the pep band (trombone). I didn't have the time for marching band though because I wasn't getting enough practice time on my guitar already. When I chose the bassoon I was actually undecided in my mind between it, saxophone, or oboe. Because I really love all three instruments. I'm glad I picked the bassoon in the end, though. Someday I shall play the oboe too. Just because I want to play all three of my favorite instruments to some extent. My original bassoon teacher told me one day that I come off to her as an oboe player. Apparently there is some oboe player stereotype and I fit into it. lol Everything needs more woodwind! It's a beautiful instrument if you can play it right, which, with you being bassoon, shouldn't be overly difficult. My problem is that I play too many instruments so I always want to play a few in different sectionals but I can't! XD Oboe stereotype? Huh. Interesting XD

I think that we take charter buses but I'm not sure... We might take a plane. Memphis to Florida isn't too long of a drive, especially in a charter bus. Ours is huge and we're always in the biggest category. If we do go to the same contest, we may not compete together...

Above 200 is a big band, ours has about 250.I don't think a band of 400 people could even fit on the field
Tank Legend 19 August 12, 2012 Share August 12, 2012 I said sometimes we normally sit around 200 300 range. We have different competing bands but I am not foreshore how many of use their will be in 2 more years so its all up to how many band kids we have. Maybe less maybe more. Abstract 832 August 12, 2012 Share August 12, 2012 I played the euphonium from 6th grade to 8th, and trombone from 8th through 11th. It was a heck of a lot of fun during those years. And starting in 9th grade, marching band was freaking awesome. Only reason I ever went to school, in fact. (I'm almost not joking.) WE were a small high school of about 800 students altogether, I think we had something like 50 or 60 people in the band. You had to be in the band to be in color guard, so we lost a few flute and clarinet players during marching season. I remember concert band wasn't as much fun, but I still enjoyed the music. Practicing wasn't my thing though, I could always just study a piece for half an hour or so and have it down completely. I quit my senior year, the new band director we had gotten my junior year and I did not like each other, at all. The tension and bullshit just made the activity I had once thoroughly enjoyed into a chore. I never wanted that, so I had to end it before I ended up hating it. I do pull out the ol 'bone from time to time and mess around, but it's true what they say; you don't play for a while, and you will suck. Your mouth muscles weaken, your diaphragm isn't as strong, etc. It kind of sucks. "Let the steel of my resolve be not bested by the sum of my fears." I didn't play my trumpet at all last summer, and I really regretted it at the beginning of camp. But I think I've pretty much gotten it back now, and am 1 of the 3 official trumpet screamers. I love da high notes
Music Chart Fan 819 August 12, 2012 Share August 12, 2012 I was in marching band, concert band, and occasionally pep band and jazz band in high school. I played French horn and I marched mellophone. I was never a really good player, and I didn't try particularly hard, but I definitely had a lot of fun. Band kids at my high school hung out together, and being a "band kid" largely defined me in high school, along with being in honors classes. The college I went to for undergrad had a marching band, but I opted not to be in it, because I was burned out, and also, studying chemical engineering was enough work! I was in French horn choir for most of my time as an undergrad. Now I only get to play French horn occasionally, if at all.
