Den blushed, "I just... kinda realized I don't... actually know... your birthday." He looked at his hooves, the red showing through his blue fur. He'd already been shot, shanked, tossed, strangled, cut, and punched for this mare and he barely knew anything about her, like what she liked, disliked, when her birthday was, anything. Inwardly he sighed.

The unicorn failed to catch the message. He had fallen asleep a few seconds before Sapphires display, and he failed to wake up despite the noise.

 

 

 

"How will any of this work?" Patches asked confused, "I've never been adopted before, if that isn't already obvious enough."

"I never told you my birthday anyway, so it's alright. Besides, I don't think there would be any other way you would know." Cherry Blossom laughed a little and pulled him into a hug. "As long as you're happy, then I guess I'll be happy as well, Den." she closed her eyes and rested her head on his chest.

Sapphire loked opver at the elderly pony's cell and giggled, "Look, he's asleep! See Wits, he's not cryptic, he's tired!" She was smiling and set a brownie in his bubble by breaking the circle breifly and reforming it. "There, now he'll smell my pastries and wake up!" She looked pleased with herself.

 

Den looked at Patches and gave a loose smile, "We go to your guardians, the hospital, in this case, sign some paper work, go to court to prove we're capable, and then you're our kid. In technicality, anyways." His smile became more substantial when he was hugged, and his blush returned, but he leaned into her a little bit. Leaning down so his face was in her ear, he said, "What makes me happy is seeing you happy Cherry."

'"Eh-...w-..b-dum... um... how exactly do I... do that? What you said didn't exactly make sense to me. That or my brain is slowly leaking out of my ears" he said as he watched the mare put what looked like magical barriers around the other pony and Wits.

He looked at the mare and sighed, "I don't believe we have introduced. I'm Magneus, the Ethereal Wolf. And I wasn't part of the whole demons thing, but I certainly heard a lot about it..."

"Oh, I'm Sapphire. Officer of the Manehatten Police Force. You must be the Magnus guy Witsy keeps telling me about. You walk through walls and stuff," she smiles kindly, "Brownie?" she holds out a plate. She then looks around for Speedy, realising she just had a massive display of power, and that she didn't really want to scare away her partner.

Sapphire raised her hoof like an excited school mare, "Oo, oo, pick me! Pick me! I can be her mentor! I'm one of the mares who where there when she tried to kill Nightfall, so I'm kinda the same as him in this instance, trust-wise, right? Annnnd, Mr. Mystery, who's to say YOU aren't in the game? Or that Speedy isn't? Wait, am I? I love games!" She started bouncing up and down.

 

Maven woke up when Nightfall disturbed her wings around him. She yawned, and looked at him, "Everything okay?"

 

Nightfall looked back at Maven.

"I hope I'm all right... I have a really bad feeling about the future... about... no, never mind. I need to stop being so pessimistic."

Speedy was just standing there a bit confused and very nervous. She was also blushing very slightly, and she almost freaked when Sapphire looked at her.

"Eeep! Oh, sorry... You... You're very.. powerful.."

She looked Sapphire up and down.

"And pretty..."

She blushed even more.

"Um, don't you have to go get Nightfall?"

She blushed, "You really think so? I mean, I really do try to look my best, but sometimes I feel like I really go unnoticed... Oh well. You boys play nice!" Her horn glowed, and with a bright flash she was gone. A few motes of light apeered around Speedy, and then she disapeered too, and reapeared next to Sapphire, who was standing infront of Maven with a bit of bed head, and Nightfall, who looked more tired than Den felt. "Hey Nighty. We have an old guy at the station who wants to talk to you. You haven't been answering your radio, so I figured you were with Maven. Sorry for cutting your sabatical short, but we actually really need you." Maven sighed.

"I may have to quit the police force entirely, but I'll be able to manage taking care of the foals," said Cherry Blossom as it seemed she completely forgot about all of the murders she committed in the hospital. "Den, do you remember that I said I wanted to have foals? I think that dream just came true."

She blushed, "You really think so? I mean, I really do try to look my best, but sometimes I feel like I really go unnoticed... Oh well. You boys play nice!" Her horn glowed, and with a bright flash she was gone. Speedy was surprised to find herself in the new location, and shocked to find Nightfall and the other mare who had gotten pissed at her right in front of her. Nightfall wasn't too surprised.

"Sapphire..?"

He turned around and hugged Sapphire.

"You're alive... thank goodness. It's ok, as well, Speedy. So, Sapphire, you were saying we all go to the station..? I'm ready."

He turned and gave Speedy a nod, who only stood there, blushing and nervous.

The old stallion snored rather softly and shifted a little.

 

 

 

"This is going to be a bit strange." Patches said, "I mean, if you adopt me, Cherry is less than two years older than me! I can see the weird looks and family photos now."

He grinned, "Ya, ya I remember that." I remember at the time I thought she meant she wanted me and her too make them. It was... awkward, but it wasn't necassarily an unatractive idea. Wait a minute, I just agreed to be the father of 9 foals. Oh man, this is gunna be a 'joyride.' "Kid, I've seen worse. Try a familly picture with a drug-addicted brother and a foal half your size. You're half the size of the drugged out pony, and more mature," he sighed, "You went to school before the backpack, yes?"

 

Sapphire smiled, and her horn glowed. On the floor, a bunch of scratches apeered and glowed, and with a bright flash, the four of them were back at the police station. Sapphire, however, looked like she needed a nap. "I don't feel so good," she said, collapsing to her stomache. Then she shot up, flashed, and in the bathroom near by, they could hear the sounds of a pony who was throwing up.

"Isn't this going to be great! They won't be lonely with having brothers and sisters around eachother! Then they'll grow up and get wonderful lives. We'll go to their graduations and weddings. As we age really old, we can always see their grandchildren." Cherry Blossom flew around happily in circles around Den. She was constantly talking about the children and how they would live their lives. "I wasn't actually expecting to adopt foals, but oh well. They are all just precious little angels!" Cherry Blossom watched as all the newborns slept so peacefully.

He walked, or more like staggered, over to a table.

"But honestly, I don't think I can do this anymore..."

Den blushed, "And maybe one day, we'll have one or two of our own as well..." he whispers, barely audible. He walks to Patches, "If you'd like, we can actually adopt you right now. I don't think you really need to stick around the hospital for the rest of the day, either, so we could probably get you acquainted to 'home'."

"Sure, I went to Sattleback High. I got As and Bs, but my sister was the real smarts." said Patches. His eyes started to tear up and he wished he hadn't mentioned her. "Her name was Kay. She was only ten and she helped me with my high school homework. She had a real future in mathematics."

Maven sighed, "There is no pony more qualified than you, Nightfall. Hey Wits, been a while. I believe I have to sign up for a license." She tapped the globe and it shattered; Sapphire was pretty close to out of energy. Sapphire stumbles out of the bathroom groaning, "I feel like laying down on the floor- zzzzzzzzzzzzz" She fell asleep on the floor.

"Yeah! One day we could have our own 2 foals, or 3, 5, 21!" Cherry Blossom gave Den an excited look, never has she been this excited for anything. Den gritted his teeth and looked away. I'm sorry. I really am sorry. What I did was stupid and single-minded, as well as short-sighted. "I'm sorry, Patches." He went over to the door, "I can leave, if you'd like." He heard what Cherry said, but his guilt wouldn't let him smile.

"Qualifications..? Wits is the best qualified of us all here, generally speaking. I'm qualified for command on the field and that's it. He has a higher degree of qualification, and letters from the princess themselves."

He turned and slowly walked towards Maven, looking between her and Speedy.

"Maven... I need to tell you... If Wits goes, I expect you to take over. Now Speedy is with us, she can help you."

The old stallion opened one eye and saw Nightfall's navy blue coat. He muttered something and stood up. "Question time," he said tiredly, "Am I right, captain?" He stumbled over to Nightfall and extended one, wrinkly hoof to shake. "Names aren't important. I already know yours."

Cherry Blossom noticed the upset look on Den's face. She wasn't really sure why he was sad, but she flew over to him and asked, "Is something wrong? We can adopt Patches too Den!" she tried to cheer him up in any way she could, but she didn't know the source of his sadness.

The old stallion opened one eye and saw Nightfall's navy blue coat. He muttered something and stood up. "Question time," he said tiredly, "Am I right, captain?" He stumbled over to Nightfall and extended one, wrinkly hoof to shake. "Names aren't important. I already know yours."

 

He looked at the new pony.

"Names are part of who I am and what I do. I need one so I can know who talked to me about this K guy before I, well..."

He looked back at the mares.

"Well, you should know. I can only assume you want to talk about the K guy because he creeps me out and sounds like a very bad guy."

When she said that, he looked like he was going to throw up, "I'll be back soon Cherry. I need a drink." He stepped out and went to the bathroom. He stood there and looked himself in the mirror. He saw a strong, blue stallion with dark bags under his eyes and a heavy face. He was scarred, and his eyes had the look of experiences that other ponies hadn't even dreamed of. He hardly recognized himself.

 

Maven gasped, "B-b-but I'm not even an officer! Nightfall, are you listening?" She stamped a hoof trying to get his attention, "Why are you even saying such things; you'll be captain for a long time yet!"

Wits breathed slowly and calmed down.

 

"All right, all right. If Nightfall can vouch for my skill and authority, then you can go on with your lungs intact. So, spill your guts. What do you know?" He sat down. "I'm assuming you will approve Sapphire being Speedy's mentor, Captain?"
