Derpy in deep ponderment

So here is my latest attempt at vector art. Derpy in deep ponderment. I've gotten alot better at doing this quicker. only took a couple of hours to finish. What do you guys think? again I'd like comments from anypony but if there is an experinced vector artist out there I'd like to ask for advice I'm really only just learning how all this works. less than a week ago i couldn't even use illustrator so there is alot i don't know.

For more art look below /

What are vectors and what program do you need to make them?

I wanna make some fan-art. Btw Nice art work I hope to see more from you! ^_^

Vectors are images created without pixels coming into effect. they are created with a tool that can create perfect curves and angles without a steady hand. Vectors can be expanded infinitly without losing detail. You can create vectors on adobe illustrator or an open source (free) program called inkwell. The primary tool I used is the pen tool. there are also shape tools like ovals and squares that can be modified into other shapes.

Try out inkwell if you don't have illustrator. Its interface isn't very user freindly however the pen tool is much easier to manipulate than the one in illustrator.

ya know what i think i'm just gonna keep posting all my vectors in this topic so here ya go another one I made this just today.

Fluttershy: Dear princess Celestia; I think the bronies are stalking me. let me know what your thoughts are.

I can't figure out how to attatch after the first post.. so meanwhile i'll hyperlink

ahha I figured it out.

LOL. I love derpy and most of the fan art is good from her, which this one is. The only thing I noticed thought is that the snout looks a bit too squared to be a mare's

ok, i've examined and applied your critique. here is the result. what do you think?

The Derpy one was pretty good, although I definitely liked your Fluttershy piece much better. One thing I would do is add more dynamics to the lines, for example, where any of the lines end but don't attach to another line, try making it pointier. Other than that, I don't know what information I could disclose that might be of use - seems you've already gotten pretty good at it so far. Cheers!

@Fluttershy: I can't stalk you, i'm a muffin :(

think what's missing in derpy pic is a some shading around where the tail is since the hair would block light. Not sure though.

by jove i think you've got it... i haven't really done any shading in the mane and tail. fluttershy doesn't need it but the derpy pic looks awkward without it. i'll fix that later and post it when i'm done (working on finals or I'd fix it now) I'm also constructing an idea for a pinkie pie one... something about chewing on her own tail or something...

pointier? where? i can't make the whole thing point obviously that'd be ridicoulous but i can see what your saying about the mane and perhaps adding some more lines. i'll add those in my next post as well. thanks for your critique please feel free to comment on my future works as well. :)

i'll get back to derpy later. meanwhile Heres the pinkie pie picture i was thinking about making.

Twilight: Pinkie? why are you chewing on your tail?

Pinkie: The bronies told me it would taste like cotton candy.

Twilight: and?

Pinkie: they lied...

Twilight: then why are you still...?

Pinkie: cuase it taste like bubblegum DUH!

i think i need to perfect the shape of her mane and tail...

Dawww, she looks so adorable! I wonder what exactly is she thinking about?

Fluttershy is scared...again. Whats new? lol Good job on her as well!

And Pinkie is also looking adorable, but a little awkward in the face. Still a decent job on her!

MMM wierd in the face... maybe the cheek bulges are at the wrong angle? tweek that a bit. And change the facial expression to something more suitable for someone munching on something. ok loading... and there. better? as for fluttershy well i'm not trying to do anything new just yet. I want to be sure my art is recognizable first I'll do some crazy stuff with them later.

Ooo, really cool stuff you have here.

Well, I'm going to do my best to critique at 2:45 in the morning. :D

  • The outlines seem too thin on all three of your vectors
  • Pinkie Pie's torso seems a little off, the curvature there could use a bit of work I think
  • Pinkie's mane tends to have a little more volume. Perhaps make the mane a tad bigger and more expressive?
  • Same thing applies to Fluttershy's mane.
Overall REALLY cool stuff though, excellent vectors!

YAY CRITIQUE... ok outlines too thin. i tried a variety of line sizes in all three i went with thinner ones because i felt the larger lines got too obtrusive but i'll go back and put in some heavier lines and post that up later.

Pinkies lower torso? mmm doesn't look like its resting on ground like it should be does it. i haven't got alot of refreces for ponies lying straight on thier back like that so i made it up. I'll revisit that... maybe even revector that side of her body.

And futtershys mane has bugged me a while but i could figure out why. I think this helped i might try creating a larger more curvatious shape for it.

I'd stay up and make these corrections now but... i've got finals this week. give me a few days to make these corrections and i'll repost the images with your suggestions.

If there is an experinced vector artist out there I'd like to ask for advice I'm really only just learning how all this works.

I've gone ahead and circled some points in your vectors that were either sloppy, inconsistant or just poor form.

post-3976-0-40510700-1347981053_thumb.jpg

Now I'll just talk about a few things I noticed and then I'll give some tips.

1st, I noticed that you've started to use custom strokes. This is fine, but make sure the stroke you are using is long enough. You tend to use it on sections that make it stretch too thin

2nd, I noticed you use lots of strokes, which is again fine, but it looks sloppy if the end of the stroke sticks out past where it's suppose to.

3rd, You use the strokes for a lot of things, but when they come to a bend they are sometimes rounded, sometimes flat and sometimes pointed. You probably want to be consistant in this.

Some tips:

If your having trouble getting your strokes to not exceed the places you put them, then I would recommend expanding the stroke and editing the anchors individually.

I personally very very rarely every use strokes when working with pony vectors. There is just too little control with the strokes and it ends up causing more work than they are worth.

I would also recommend that you use the pathfinder toolset when working with the eyes, it will make it so much easier and so much more accurate. More specifically, the iris highlights often go past the iris itself.

In several spots you have some very sharp or wave lines, this is usually from poor placement of the handle bars for that specific anchor, or too many anchors. Look into the pen's delete anchor point tool, the smoothing anchor button and the convert anchor point tool

Thats pretty much it for the most part. Just make sure your lines meet where they are suppose to and that they are smooth and sharp where they are suppose to.

I can't give any more advice without the source files.

Thanks, this is the first critique I've gotten from anyone who knows something about vector. I have been teaching myself (I haven't taken the vectoring class yet) so there is a lot i'm missing.

Creating fills that act in place of stokes then? thats sounds a bit more tricky but i'll give it a shot. I've spent hours trying to get the strokes to line up and most of the time they get close but not quite right. Is there a way to merge two independantly made strokes? I'm sure there is but I haven't stumbled accross it yet.

would you reccomend making symbols of commonly used shapes such as the eyes or the ears (i've made some symbols but i'm worried using the same shapes over again will result in samey looking images or would it improve consistancy...) ? the source files are rather large. I probably wouldn't attatch them to a forum but i could E-mail you one. Give me a few days to get past my finals and I'll post something with your critique taken into account.

The only way I've found for merging 2 independently made strokes is to expand them (turn the stroke itself into a shape) and then use the union pathfinder tool on the 2 line segments. The pathfinder tool can be found under the windows menu. I believe expand can be found under the object menu if I remember correctly.

As for making the line as a shape from the start, it might be more difficult. Occasionally if I don't get a line to look right I'll use a stroke and then expand it and edit it's shape after that. Generally the problem is that stroke look good until they get to the end where they tapper off. Custom strokes can fix this, but it's a bit of a hassle to make all the different sizes and lengths you need to make them look right. I've found it easier to just turn them into shapes and edit them

I would recommend using symbols for templates and starting points. You want to make sure that you edit them enough so they don't look like repeats. It's a bit tricky, but it can save a lot of time. Especially for pupil/iris, wings and the rear legs. Thats what I use symbols of... also cutie marks. xD I've also had ear symbols, but I was to lazy to remake them when I got a new computer.

Feel free to PM me the source files when you have time. I too have exams coming up this week. xD

Wish granted. I've taken into account some of Bohtty's very useful advice and I made myself an OC. I call him Jaster Shadowcaster I made up some story about him involving Lunas past as a member of her Royal Guard. He looks worried here, I'm not sure why.

Alright I've had my first Vector commision For an OC. One of my Fellow students it turns out is a brony. He asked me to Vector his OC which is based after himself some what.

he drew this as a refrence.

post-8066-0-93967100-1348616639_thumb.jpg

and I made this as a result.

post-8066-0-95678400-1348616724_thumb.png

I would have done something a little more creative with the posing, but thats what he wanted.

Mmmm no comments yet T.T sadface*

oh well still getting new art. considering making a new thread and posting all the art on the first post and just editing the first post to add more art so you don't have to scroll through the whole thing. what do ya think of that Idea?

Anyway If any of you like Clannad well heres a Nagisa pony.
