Pegasi and Unciorns

I've had this question at the back of my mind, and I plan on finally finding out the answer.

 

Can a pony be both a pegasi, and a unicorn?

The only two ponies I recall being both are: Celestia, and Luna.

But can a regular pony have both?

There are three alicorns in the show, and it's generally accepted that they are a special exception: ponies in general only fall into one of the three types, without becoming hybrids (i.e. if a pegasus and an earth pony had children, their offspring would be either one or the other).

 

Fun fact: Celestia and Luna (and most likely Cadance) actually embody all three races, not just pegasai and unicorns.

Just to add on to that answer, they are all royalty. All three races together are called an "Alicorn" Also, Queen Chrysalis is also one. Sorta. Shes not really a pony. But she has both a horn and wings and royalty.

Oh. See, learn something new everyday. I didn't know they were called alicorns. I only called them Pegacorns or Unisuses. Chimmacherry? Cherrychonga?

A question regarding the ponies' species, inside the show. This is more about the show itself, not so much a fandom-esque thing. Moving to Show Discussion.

 

Hypothetically, a 'normal' pony could become something similar to an Alicorn/Pegasus Unicorn, through temporary magical enhancements. I.E Rarity is a unicorn that got temporary wings. Sure they weren't pegasus wings, and were butterfly wings, but speaking in a technical way, she was still a pony who had a horn and wings.

 

But other than that technicality, I think ponies need to be born as alicorns to have both pegasi wings and unicorn horns. You can't just obtain them and 'become' a legit alicorn.

I agree with this. I also think that they would need the superhuman physical attributes and connection with the earth to be a true alicorn

I just want to note that (at least I don't think so) the word "alicorn" has never been used in the show to describe Celestia, Luna or Cadence. There is no clear explanation in the show as to how these winged unicorns (and earth ponies too?) came to be, which is a major plot hole in my opinion.

The first two episodes may have shown some history of Equestria, but the princess' origins have never been revealed in the show. Such a disappointment really, I hope they will do something about that in season 3.

It's important to note that Cadence was meant to be a unicorn (hasbro changed her last minute to sell more toys), she is even referred to as such by Twilight on the show. Also, her royal status (as well as Blueblood's) could be explained by being descends of the Unicorn royalty from before Celestia & Luna took over.
