movies/tv Teen kills himself after favourite tv character dies.

My mom jokingly got mad at me for getting her 'sucked into Naruto' when Itachi died, because he is her favorite character, too.

However, this world just doesn't surprise me anymore. I've read enough yahoo article titles in my time on the internet to get a true understanding for the most retarded, outlandish and unbelievable things some people do, some grotesque, some pure and simply stupid, others just unbelievable, like this. It's sad that someone took their life over something like that, in every definition of the word 'sad'.

Laughing over someones death is even more pathetic if you ask me. I doubt that you actually laughed at it but its something you made up to either get attention or to make you look like some cool guy.

While a do agree that its a stupid thing to do, i see no reason to to point out that you laughed.

We laugh to make uncomfortable situations feel less threatening to us. That is why when you try to have a staring contest with someone, you often laugh inexplicably, you're subconscious is trying to make this seemingly tense situation go away.

People joke about death all the time, why do you think that? Its because if you can turn death into a joke its not as scary to you, or you can at least believe its not as scary because you laughed at it. Its a natural response to ease tension, and worry.

Not defending or condoning any actions here, just giving scientific context.

Kotaku and Dailyfail aren't exactly the most reliable of sources. A quick Google search only brought up anime news sites. This is so ridiculous it has to be a joke.

Maybe I'm just in denial over how stupid people can be.

Joking about death is OK as long as you do it the right way.

Pointing out that laughed....Hard... at someone else is just wrong. And if you happen to be that sick minded i'd say.

Keep it to yourself.

I don't care if they are reliable or not. Just because they aren't that reliable doesn't mean you should point and laugh at something that seems to be serious. Mainly because you might be hurting other people reading what you have to say.

it shows a lack of respect towards others.

Actually, it's also a coping mechanism. Not to say that it's always OK to do or is never done in a disrespectful matter. I've dealt with so much death and violence that I've picked up a dark sense of humor. It helped me do my job, but I keep it to myself as most people will never understand it and take it the wrong way.

I sincerely doubt that the guy killed himself just because Itachi died. At the very least I doubt it's the only reason.

I have gotten attached to many characters from lots of different shows and honestly they have effected me in many major ways. They have had a major effect on my outlook on the world, what kind of person I want to be, and what kind of goals I'm striving for. I can tell you that without video games, anime, cartoons, movies, etc I would probably be in a very different, much darker, and significantly more depressing place than I am now

Whether or not being influenced by a show or character can bring you into any kind of "unhealthy" state at all assumes that there is a "healthy" mental state to begin with. This really just comes down to what an individual believes is right and wrong and I'm really not in the mood to turn another thread into that so yeah lol

My guess if this isn't some sort of disgusting thing to attract attention (that the boy didn't really do this and someone made it up), then the boy had other issues as well. News sources often conveniently leave out important facts. For all we know, if it really did happen, he could have been abused, had mental disabilities, or any other variety of things on top of this event which maybe pushed him over the edge (and the news makes it appear that this was the only thing that lead him to his decision).

My post contains some spoilers from the Legend of Drizzt, including the Transitions trilogy and the ongoing Neverwinter series. It's the greatest series of martial fantasy and adventure ever written. If you haven't read it then I strongly urge you to do so and not read the spoiler box.

When Zaknafein regained a little control over himself after he was reanimated and forced to hunt down Drizzt, the way he shouted "For us!" and threw himself into the acid pit was heart wrenching. When Regis and Cattie-Brie died at the end of Transitions I was in pieces. When Bruenor died after the fight in Gaunltgrym, I was content because of how he faced it, but reading about his wordless reunion with Regis, Cattie-Brie, and Wulfgar after death moved me just as much, and to this day just thinking about it almost makes me cry.

I'm just as attached to the characters of MLP, though for drastically different reasons.

Without knowing this kid or anything he endured, my gut would tell me that there were a lot of vital things missing from his life in order for him to become that invested in fictional characters. This character who died probably meant something to him that another person should have, but there wasn't anyone there to fill that void. As stupid as the situation may seem to many, I can understand his position if that's the case. I only wish his life had taken a better direction and he was able to find some fulfillment. He'll get no ridicule from me.

Feel free to think of me as anything you please. The Daily Mail is just another tabloid. The "news" is little more than Onion-level. If he died, then that's tragic. The guy likely had other, more serious issues that contributed to his suicide. That he would do something like this is absolutely ridiculous, however.

Let's agree to disagree. I'd rather not derail the topic.

Absolutely this. The dad described him as being "detached from reality"...pretty sure there was some sort of mental illness involved here too, if this is legit. People don't just kill themselves for such little reasons.

This is absolutely ridiculous. I have a very strict opinion on suicide and that is to not kill yourself over the most trivial of things. True, he might have had some mental illness, but then either his dad or guardian should be held responsible for not taking appropriate measures.

The article is very basic too. It doesn't really tell much about the boy's background.

I can get pretty attached to characters from amy form of media, whether it be tv, video games or even music. When _______ died on The Walking Dead (fans know who I'm talking about :/ ), I was near tears as well as at the end of Red Dead Redemption and the last few lines of The Black Parade.

But suicide? Hellll no. If I was going to kill myself, I have alot more reasons than a television show.

Not gonna lie. I laughed. Hard. Reminds me of the guy who killed himself over a Harry Potter spoiler. Which was actually a joke.

People can be so stupid sometimes, but I do wonder if this is actually legit.

Oh lawd.

People are so stupid these days, killing yourself just for a spoiler, damn.

The same with the Shanky article, he didn't even watch the whole series,

Maybe itachi comes back in the future, maybe he doesn't

Where is the line between being a fan and having a serious problem?

So some of you may have heard the story of the teenaged boy in russia whom killed himself after his favourite anime character died. Article here.

It's easy to get very mentally and emotionally involved in a TV show.

I've cried countless times when favourite characters of mine go through any emotional turmoil and even death.

And to some people even that is too far.

But the idea of actually killing myself because I'm so emotional disturbed over the death of a character is a concept beyond my scope of understanding.

Which brings me back to my original question.

How invested are you into some of these characters in our fandom or any fandom?

When does being a fan of a show reach over into the unhealthy state or even the life threatening state?

Discuss.

~

Wow! That is kind of creepy and sad. I had a lot of favorite characters that died in anime, video games, and movies. I feel sad of course, but you don't see me ending my life by blowing my head off with a shotgun.

By the way I was listing to this song from Doom while reading the article and it made it very creepy.

  • 8 years later...

I would be very upset if Twilight died in the show but I wouldn't kill myself over it, although In the G5 movie I think it's hinted at, being set hundreds of years after FIM:worry:

I can’t help but feel like there was probably a lot more going on behind the scenes than just this. Other factors happening with this being what pushed him over the edge. It’s quite sad, since he was quite young.

It's tragic how this happened, and makes me wonder what could have been done to prevent it. I think there was something seriously wrong with the teen's brain, like maybe a mental illness or chemical imbalance. Also, what about the parents? Surely the teen would have shown signs that something was wrong, so why didn't they try to help him? Or if they did try, why didn't it work? Those are important thoughts to think about, and this teen's death should be a lesson to people who don't take unhealthy obsessions serious.
