DeiStar 248 November 3, 2012 Share November 3, 2012 So, I was just thinking about what would have happened if Nightmare Moon had won and brought eternal night to Equestria. Well, I thought that no day = no sun = no heat, meaning that it would always be cold. With that, plants would eventually perish, since they can't live without sunlight. Even if ponies managed to live a while without plants, they, along with every other living being, would eventually die of starvation due the lack of plants and oxygen. Eternal night would become an eternal darkness of death, with no one to witness the 'beauty' of the night, as Nightmare Moon desired. It seems like she didn't think that one very well...
Dusty Soul 2,612 November 3, 2012 Share November 3, 2012 It would be a pretty big disaster. Though it would kill everything in Equestria, because plants need sun, ponies need plants, and without that basically everything dies. 1 Soundcloud-------------------Facebook---------------------------Youtube
~Flutter Shy 8 November 3, 2012 Share November 3, 2012 Yes, since I watched that episode I always wondered how things would be without sun light. Also too, all the animals would die!
Guest November 3, 2012 Share November 3, 2012 I actually doubt that eternal night would be a disaster in that form. Sure, darkness everywhere. Cold too of course. Plants dying? Not so sure, this is Equestria after all. I suspect that, in Equestria, the plants don't need sunlight but just care from earth ponies - hence making earth ponies a vital part of the pony species as shown in Hearth's Warming Eve. I don't think Nightmare Moon wanted to kill everything in Equestria. Rather she just wanted to get in control and make the ponies appreciate her night. NavelColt 22,883 November 3, 2012 Share November 3, 2012 (edited) I read a very good fanfic about this, and indeed, ponies were miserable. While not all plant life was wiped out, plants were always weak, brought little harvest, and caused constant famine. Nightmare Moon was too arrogant and never conceded to allowing the sun to rise and make the plant life and her people happy, because she was too obsessed with her 'beautiful night' always being there. Also, this is show discussion material, not fandom material. Moving to Show Discussion. Edited November 3, 2012 by ~Chaotic Discord~
RainbowTheNinja 50 November 3, 2012 Share November 3, 2012 But really, what with all the unicorn magic and stuff, they'd be fine, if not just sad. Besides, Celestia would probably escape, so they'd have Celestia, and Celestia's Celestia. And if I know Celestia, she'd figure something out. Things just got 20% cooler. Lightning Fluttershy 1,844 November 3, 2012 Share November 3, 2012 Mind = blown. I never really thought about that. I always assumed it would just be dark all the time but I've never gone that deep into it. Though now that I think about it it would be catastrophic. All the ponies would just end up dying and Nightmare Moon would have all their blood on her hooves and then she would commit suicide and the Celestia would be the only one left and she would me lonely and go insane and commit suicide and then everything would be gone. himanuts 165 November 4, 2012 Share November 4, 2012 Alot would die off. Not everything. But alot. Most. And what does survive would be sad, but probably thrive as best as they could.
Sepraxian 36 November 4, 2012 Share November 4, 2012 (edited) What would happen if the night lasted forever? It's simple, look at any of the Earth's two poles. That's what happens when there's not enough sunlight for a long, long time. For almost an eternity, even. That is, of course, if MLP world is at least relatively similiar to ours. Nothing&NoOne 695 November 4, 2012 Share November 4, 2012 Nightmare Moon would probably be happy. If I may, I'd like to compare it to Scar's reign in The Lion King. There was sadness and despair, everything started dying, but Scar succeeded in his goal and therefore didn't give a shit. Nightmare Moon would be having too much fun over the fact that she beat Celestia.
Rarietty 632 November 5, 2012 Share November 5, 2012 (edited) Everyone would die, as ponies are herbivores and plants need light to grow. Even if unicorns could use their magic to provide "fake" sunlight, most ponies would freeze to death anyway due to the lack of warmth from the sun. Everyone might be able to survive for a short bit of time, but I doubt very long. Imagine if Nightmare/Luna trapped her sister on the sun. So, she'd be forced to live on the barren planet all alone. Not only that, but she'd also be filled with guilt for killing an entire planet that was once beautiful and filled with life. What confuses me though is why people say Celestia wasn't justified in sending Luna to the moon. Seriously, if she didn't do that everyone would probably die. That's why I hate when Celestia is portrayed as an evil tyrant would sent Luna (and often others) to the moon for no reason. I mean, I'm fine when it's used for comedy, but otherwise nope. Mandarin Tales 11 November 5, 2012 Share November 5, 2012 Well, I presume you're right: no light = no plants = no food = no ponies. Perhaps some ponies would leave Equestria to look for another place to live!
Prince Midnight 817 November 5, 2012 Share November 5, 2012 i figure she would have a way to make enough light for plants to live on, i mean come on, their ponies, with magic, MAGIC, im sure she had some kind of plan. besides, evil people dont really think things through all the way, but shes still mai waifu regardless x3 Electrobolt is my waifu x3 Midnight moon (my main OC) siggy by: Toa of Ponies
pixy 1 November 6, 2012 Share November 6, 2012 It would probably do some damage...but the sun would still shine through the moon, so I don't think it would be as cold as everyone is implying.
duidamasterXD 9,627 November 6, 2012 Share November 6, 2012 Yeah, I saw this posted on TV Tropes for this series and it makes sense. You need the sun after all. Nightmare Moon would just be too insane to acknowledge it until it was too late
DireDoe 48 November 6, 2012 Share November 6, 2012 I think the ponies are smart enough to eventually create biomes for plants to grow in - like greenhouses, with electric lights. I'd be a bit draw of power, but what with magic and everything there's sure to be a way to keep things going, even if it's just having ponies take turns running on a big hamster wheel-type device in order to power a generator. They could also use the power to create sun lamps so there's no vitamin D deficiencies. They more than likely wouldn't have the variety they're used to, but they wont go hungry. What would be the biggest concern would be mental, not necessarily physical. People (and ponies, I'd assume) like having a day/night cycle: in areas without one (like in parts of Alaska and Canada) there's usually issues with people having breakdowns and anxiety attacks. They aren't designed to go without day and night, so their minds freak out. So in essence: in Nightmare Moon succeeded, all the ponies would become crazy mole people. ...I think I want to watch that show.
sweetolebob18 728 November 11, 2016 Share November 11, 2016 I've seen this elsewhere but I believe it. IIRC the prophecy was ...The stars will aid in her escape and She will bring about night everlasting. Look at Twilight's Cutie Mark and remember More than 1 her escaped -including Luna (and a lot of Ponyville, for that matter) More than 1 she did things -including Twilight (and Mayor Mare, no doubt) Many royals have a title or 2 that is more poetic than meaningful If you assume Luna was called "The Eternal Night" or "The Everlasting Darkness", or some such, then The prophecy makes perfect sense & was completely accurate. The point being IMO, there was Night Everlasting but Nightmare Moon didn't cause it.
chaosprincess 1,067 November 11, 2016 Share November 11, 2016 Nightmare Moon's reign may seem like a death sentence to all life, but all would not perish due to yes life does need sunlight, but in that world there is magic between the unicorns and alicorns they very much could sustain life and there is some plants that thrive from the moonlight and within that world itself it is probably possible to have food that can thrive within nights cold grasp, but I suppose there is a small chance they could fail, but of course the main 6 would always come through and find a way to sustain life since that's usually what happens they come in and save the day, but in that case save the night and all life. Swifty 249 November 13, 2016 Share November 13, 2016 It was already shown in the alternative future, that everything is fine and dandy at eternal night. Ponies became grim and frostbitten, but Thats all. Another step to make Princess Buttmonkey more lame. Great job, writers. Great job.
cider float 2,538 November 13, 2016 Share November 13, 2016 There are certain plants that can live without sunlight but probably live from indirect light maybe from magic or fire. Besides the ponies eat a lot of dairy and eggs as well they can get that as well. The fact that Nightmare Moon's timeline, her rule and the mane five standing there healthy and able shows that it doesn't damage their nutrition.
