Vegetarian! ^_^

I have recently decided to become a vegetarian. I have a lot learn about it, and I hope I can really do this! First, I'm just starting off by cutting out ALL meats

What do you mean, "First?" Not eating meat is all all there is to being a vegetarian. What's step two, somehow uneat the meat you ate in the past?

Seriously though, good for you. You want to do that, go ahead.

Now if you excuse me, I'm going to go fill a bath with sausages and roll around in it.

Thanks a lot! I have been looking for good vegetarian cooking and I feel like this is not going to be so hard! I definitely am not doing it to LOSE weight. I'm 5'2" and weigh 111 lbs. Haha. But I just hated how fast food was making me feel. Thanks for the support! :D

Oh yeah, and by "first" I mean that yes, there is more to being vegetarian. Anything with gelatin is not considered vegetarian, so gummy candy, poptarts, other things I can't quite remember..... Yeah. That is what is going to be hard about this. :P

Oh yes, after going through this thread, I'd like to clear some things up! First. I do plan on drinking milk and eating eggs. I also have researched different ways to get my protein. Second, I will never ever push this lifestyle choice on anyone else. Much in the same way that I am Agnostic, I do not want to make anyone uncomfortable for living the life they want to live. :) I am a peaceful person and becoming vegetarian will not challenge that. Third, I have, like I said, researched quite a bit on this subject. I know what my body can handle. I am going to eat healthier. My body just wasn't feeling good at all for the longest time because I just ate like crap! And just because I'm skinny and toned now doesn't mean that couldn't change within the next ten years. Fourth, I am also doing this for moral reasons. I know I can't take back all the meat I ate before, and I know I'm just one person. But for me, it's the fact that I am not supporting slaughterhouses and how they treat the animals. Might I suggest consuming local meats? That is always a good alternative. ;) But like I said, I do not give a hoot what you eat! I am taking care of my body, not anyone else's. :3 Thanks for listening and supporting, or at least participating in this conversation! ^_^

I have recently decided to become a vegetarian. I have a lot learn about it, and I hope I can really do this! First, I'm just starting off by cutting out ALL meats from my diet and replacing them with other protein sources, and I am also going to try to cut out all pops and try to eat better in general. :P I have decided to cut out meat "cold turkey" if you will. Haha. Please, let me know if you are a vegetarian! Maybe post some pointers and some helpful info. And if you are considering it, please, research it a LOT (read food labels!) and decide if it's the right lifestyle for you! Even though you are only one pony, that's all it takes to make a difference. Not only am I doing it for the animals, I am doing it for my health. I have heard that it can make your body feel so much better. I mean, really, fast food is just soooo terrible for me! I am going to be looking so forward to making this change! ^_^

While I'm not a Veggie I have many veggie and vegan friends and have to cater to them when cooking sometimes.

One thing I would recommend is working out what 'level' of veggie you are. I have a few friends that won't drink a particular brand of drinks local to the uk because animal products are used in the creation of the bottle rather than the liquid itself.

On the bright side you'll become a very creative cook (in theory) because to make up for the lack of meat many veggies that I know end up experimenting with all sorts of things.

Also eat Humus... its delicious :)

First of all, Thank you for not looking at non vegetarians as evil. I appreciate that.

Secondly, if you are going to drink milk and eat eggs, I don't see what the big deal with gelatin is. I simply cannot see Pop Tarts as killing animals. (though I do have lethal plans for the Nyan cat. Hate that overdone meme!) and besides, do you really want to see Bill Cosby sad?

I do feel much better that you are eating eggs.

So have fun with this, but remember: you are young still. So if this doesn't work out no one will hold you to it.

You are free. Be free.

Enjoy. and eat cheese too!

Clearing up a few things:

Protein =/= protein =/= protein

You eat protein to get amino acids, and not all types of protein have all types of amino acids. Meat proteins have a lot more amino acids spread over a lot more types, while plants have less. You can be eating a ton of protein from non-meat sources but you still might not be getting all the amino acids you need.

You can still get them from dairy and eggs, though, so as long as you know what you're doing vegetable-wise and/or are a lacot-ovo, however, you should be fine.

Same deal with a few vitamins and minerals; you can get them through dairy and eggs, a variety of vegetables, or vitamins for the few that are only found in animal products.

Now, I've had several friends who've experienced losses in energy while vegetarian. All have eventually started eating meat again and have said that they feel better. But as long as you're still getting your needed amount of calories and all your vitamins/minerals/etc., you should be fine, I think.

I'd also like to point out that a meat eater can be every bit as healthy as a veg. The type and quantity of meat matters a hell of a lot; a lot of meat eaters eat fast food, bacon, fried stuff, hotdogs, stuff like that, all of which is pretty unhealthy in large quantities. It's not the meat itself that is bad, it's all the stuff done to the meat to make it taste delicious without being expensive.

As for ethics (opinions inbound), eating other animals is natural, as far as I'm concerned. We're just animals with highly evolved brains at the cost of other defensive and offensive mechanisms other animals have. Our method of getting out food has evolved with us. It's a lot easier and efficient to get our meat from domesticated prey than it is to hunt. We aren't even unique in this way; for example, some species of ant keep aphids around to harvest special nectar they produce.

Anyway, glad to hear that you're not one of those angry vegetarians who preaches at us omnivores. I, personally, couldn't live without my meat. It's just too damn tasty :)

Whilst I am not into the whole Vegetarian belief thing about animals and such, my family is thinking bout going vegetarian for the health benefits (i.e less fat etc) and also better for our pockets as the prices for meat these days are bordering on the stupidly high.

Good luck with being a vegetarian, I could never do it, I love meat too much and there's not many vegetables I like, somehow I don't see it possible for me to live entirely off carrots, broccoli and asparagus (the only 3 veggies I actually like :P)

I'm sorry, I couldn't stand to see a cute tomato or cucumber be harmed. So I'll have to settle with them delicious animals.... bummer :P

But srsly

Extreme ends of the spectrum are bad for you. Eat meat, eat veggies, win win.

But me on the other hand... meat. I cook me some bacon, then fry eggs in the bacon pan. put that all on a burger... add some chedder jack, (Has jalapenos so i am having veggies) and bam! meat meat meat burger.

Secondly, if you are going to drink milk and eat eggs, I don't see what the big deal with gelatin is.

Gelatin comes from the skin and bones of animals, so unlike milk and eggs, the producing animal had to die. Actually, by that criteria, most sugar isn't strictly vegetarian, either. The refining process uses charcoal made from animal bone.

At any rate, Z Star, it sounds like you're in this for the right reasons. Good luck with your diet change!
