DoctorWhovian1902 596 November 22, 2012 Share November 22, 2012 (edited) Something very similar happened to me recently. My parents were very unaccepting of the fandom and the show as a whole. I didn't ask them for anything, but they did get me some MLP merchandise (But none of it was good. That's another story, though...). Anyways, I know what it's like to not have accepting parents, despite thinking they were open prior to learning about bronies. All in all, happy early birthday, and I hope everything goes well for you. They need to make more T-Shirts that help dispel old notions of MLP. One could be a scene of the Mane 6 beating up some changlings with the caption "This isn't your mother's My Little Pony." That's an awesome idea. I would pay for a shirt like that, but they'd probably be sold out before I could get any (same thing happened with the 20% cooler shirts at Hot Topic). Feather Gem 967 November 23, 2012 Share November 23, 2012 If it helps (which it obviously doesn't) I would buy you those shirts But anyway, don't mind them. Forget about them. Who cares what they think? They think that because of wanting a MLP shirt you're immediatly gay? Then they have issues. You can try explaining to them. But when Christmas comes (do you celebrate? if not your next birthday) ask for DOUBLE the presents. And save up as well. If they don't want to give in, you still don't have to. (unless you have the issue of...no credit card) Geez, I'm not helping at all am I? iLegovideo 152 November 23, 2012 Share November 23, 2012 Well, Parents are the hardest people to get approval of ponies from. My suggestion is to go get them, no matter how against they can be. Your parents not always approve your interests, but should love you for who you are, no matter what your interests are. angels_gal 204 November 25, 2012 Share November 25, 2012 Yes, I have, not only to ponies, but to anime in general. My mother thinks that i should be the same bland shade of grey as everyone else. but i refuse. They may be your parents but they absolutely shouldn't control what you can and can't like. Shanks 10,816 November 25, 2012 Share November 25, 2012 The closest I have to going through something like that was my mother finding out that I recently bought that 80's/90's Teenage Mutant NInja Turtles series DVD boxset although she did say "but that is for babies" and teased me about it a little she for the most part dosen't seem to care. Her reaction was a surprise to me as I am into other things which can just as easily be dismissed as being "for babies", I do wonder though what her reaction would be if she found out I am into MLP. Don't get me wrong, I am not in the closet or anything but I am not going out of my way to tell everyone either. Rarity Get's Cockroaches
angels_gal 204 November 25, 2012 Share November 25, 2012 as scootaloo says "we aren't babies!" lol and i refuse to be seen that way. I hate how we have to deal with close minded ness, not only from the haters out there, but we shouldn't have to deal with it from our parents of all people. From the haters, I can deal with it. but from parents it's a different story. There are definitely a lot of close minded parents out there. ( I know i've encountered them) I'd buy those shirts for you too! but that doesn't help you in any way. Pixel Art made by the talented Bruno! bigrigdave 22 November 25, 2012 Share November 25, 2012 (edited) You should have messed with them. It's not too late! Tell them you're gay. If you've got the stuff it won't be hard to do - just remember not to go over the edge or else they will not believe you when you tell them it was just a joke. Afterwards explain to them that ponies are not gay. There should be a donation platform for OP. Edited November 25, 2012 by souljabri557
CrystalRose 636 November 25, 2012 Share November 25, 2012 I'm sorry your parents are so ignorant. Chin up fellow brony. <3 You have a pegasister on your side here. You should just save up money bit by bit and treat yourself if people won't buy the t-shirts for you. ~DeviantArt~ ~ Taking commissions ~
Modphase 1,271 November 25, 2012 Share November 25, 2012 First of all might I say an early happy birthday! Secondly, your parents might need a lecture. That's what I did, and now they totally respect me. But if they still keep their prejudice, it might be like pulling teeth to get them to get those shirts. ApplejackIsBestPony 6 November 25, 2012 Share November 25, 2012 Just tell them you hate their guts, and you won't give them any respect if they don't respect you back, and be really cold towards them until they give in. Those type of things tear a parents heart, and after a while they'd be begging for forgiveness.
poniesforfun 716 November 25, 2012 Share November 25, 2012 (edited) This just makes me sad. Close-mindedness is always something that should be unwelcome, and to receive such behavior from parental figures? Shameful. If they weren't joking around about it, (which I'm guessing they weren't because they decided not to get you anything at all) then that's terrible, and I'm sorry for you. I agree that asking for money can get you the shirt you want in the end, but like some of the others ponies here have suggested, you should have some sort of discussion with your parents. They ARE your PARENTS, and if you don't receive the support and tolerance you deserve from them, then you shouldn't feel obligated to look upon them as supportive role-models. I'm not saying you should go in raring to argue and bicker, but simply present the fact that it's just cool to be brony I don't think the fact that they can't support your love for a show makes them unsupportive role-models. Parents aren't a beneficial being that accepts everything they are people too. Your role models don't have to be your parents but writing them off the second they become weirded out from your choice of a t-shirt might be going too far. And here we are saying that the word "gay" is a derogative word. Are we being tolerant of other cultures if we consider gay an insult? I mean come on.
