movies/tv My problem with tragic events

As many of you guys know, there have been many major tragedies throughout history, but recently, the wildfire of word about them has spread over the internet multiple times. The first instance I've seen about this happening would be 9/11, which the condolences are still spread. This was a big deal for the family of the lost people, but apparently an even bigger for Americans everywhere who haven't lost loved ones in that event. I was just a baby when the first word of 9/11 was out, but I've heard word that the concerns absolutely consumed T.V. Another instance was the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. This event didn't really take its toll on the internet, but like 9/11, it took its place on T.V., and of course, people took their time to complain about how tragic it was. The most recent one completely repeats this cycle of events and reactions. This time, like 9/11, the Sandy Hook elementary shooting impacted legal American rights, but we're not here to talk about that. You probably couldn't go from one corner of the internet to the other without seeing comments like "R.I.P. Sandy Hook shooting victims" or something like that. Things like the examples I displayed highly annoy me. People everywhere who weren't really affected (i.e. lost loved ones) share with the internet and T.V. how sorry they are that those events happened. Sure, it's a tragedy, but let the associates of the victims grieve, but otherwise, please stay quiet. If you want to go more in depth with my shared thoughts, watch this video:

If you're saying what I think you're saying, and that is; you understand the people are grieving for their losses, and they are entitled to, but you get annoyed by people who post "condolences" out of courtesy, then I can totally agree with you on that.

Put it down to me being a bit cold at times, but when we as humanity are hit by tragic events - I just dont care. People are born, people die, it's the circle of life. I've always said myself, we all have to die of something, maybe today, maybe tomorrow, maybe in a decade, but we will all die eventually of something - be that as it may.

What im saying is basically...let people have their grief, but dont pretend to care. Can you guys say that if I where to die in a shooting, would you care? No, you wouldn't. Sure, you might look at it at go "aw that's sad, the shooter should be killed" (or whatever peoples reactions would be, I dont know) but you couldn't honestly say you would care.

Sorry if that sounds a bit harsh, but that's just how I feel about this kind of topic.

Edit: ~Didn't watch the video until after I posted - derp.

Awesome. I was thinking I was ridiculously cold hearted.

I can't look at events like this without comparing them to other events, or comparing them to everyday occurrences  After all, how many people die a day? ~ 155,000. (This number is more then doubled by births, but not getting into that) So, with that amount, isn't it silly to mourn the kids (22?) who died that day? In the grand scheme of things, this should only matter if it affects you directly, or fairly close to that.

Now lets say I were to die. The first people to be affected are the people who care about me. The next are the people they are close to, as they would probably be depressed, and slight ripples, but it probably won't continue past that point. That's the only people majorly affected. The next people affected is everyone at my school, there will probably be something or another, but most people won't care. Being a part of a city that is known for being the most crime free city in Southern Canada, it would most likely reach the news. But no one would care, really.

So the fact that people care about this does not make sense to me. I never cared about what happened in America. Why? Proud Canadian. Why do Canadians care? Buck if I know. But it doesn't need to be so stretched out.

Oh, wow. That video basically put my thoughts on the matter into words. That is exactly how I feel.

One of the biggest reasons I hate when big events like shootings or whatever happen is that while I hear the news and move on everyone around me keeps going back and talking about it. Well, with the Connecticut shooting I understand that my friends talk about it since it was a few towns over from where they live, but on the internet it bothers me that everyone, everywhere I go is talking about the big tragedy.

What I hate about these events is that they get exploited endlessly by a sleazy yellow journalist media looking for ratings and tyrants and demogoges with an axe to grind. If a shooting happens then it's either "okay everyone turn in your guns" like they seriously expect violence criminals to follow gun laws or "violent video games are turning kids into murdering psychos". With 9/11 it was "give up all your rights or the boogeymen in caves who hate us for our freedom will come out from under your bed and slaughter you and your entire family." Obviously I feel bad for everyone involved in any tragedy but I am sick and tired of these worm ridden filth crawling out from the corpses of the victims to play on our emotions to brainwash us into accepting their bullcrap.

Media has reported so much on tragedies that now they aren't so tragic afterwords.

Like Sandy Hook, it was saddening yes, considering the fact my mom is a teacher, this was hitting pretty close to home.

However the media just stretches the truth and the story to the point where there is no value in it anymore.

Other examples other than 9/11 and Sandy Hook, Hurricane Katrina, Aurora, Colorado theater shooting, Columbine, etc.

I have to agree that the media really does just milk tragedy for good ratings and stuff >_> And honestly I don't trust them for anything. The details probably aren't even accurate.

I do have a hard time saying I don't care for them at all, but in a way I think they're going to feel better if people would stop disucssing it and let them deal with it themself.

I hate to say this also, but violence has become so common on the news that its getting to the point where it doesn't really seem like "News' anymore, everyday theres death and murder on the news, could they come up with something else?

I do again feel a little bit of sympathy for the families who lose these loved ones, because I know its not an easy thing, but I don't think the news media needs to be taking every murder and or tragedy and turning it into a money making scheme.

Then again I guess thats all they can do.

Btw. idk what people have been told elsewhere about Hurricane Katrina, but I know that the part that really was effected heavy was new orleans, they had plenty of other places flooded and stuff to, and plenty of people lost their homes and stuff, but there was alot of places who where not even touched by it really. I mean my house was basically untouched so It wasn't horrible for everyone.

It was a big hurricane and was worse then most, but only because of poor protection setup by leeves or that was most of the problem.

Of course, it didn't take to long  for everything to look pretty normal, I'll take you that everything is plenty back to normal around here by now :P.

Just my insight, i don't know how it was broadcast elsewhere so I dunno how to compare, I just figured I'd give my somewhat firsthand views on it.
