Who the hell is this Nightmare Moon?

Who the hell Is Nightmare Moon? How the hell is she Princess Luna? They dont even look alike. Is she some kind of an elter ego or something? Please explain this buck to me.

Nightmare Moon is supposedly a darkness that consumed Princess Luna. The darkness amplified Luna's jealousy, envy and hatred of her sister for having the sun that ponies loved, and leaving Luna herself with the moon, for which ponies only slept under. Nightmare Moon is, essentially Princess Luna, just covered in an outer 'layer' of negativity and envy.

You could honestly say, Nightmare Moon is the "Evil" Side of Luna. Being lonely, she got currepted by jelousy and negativity, thus becoming "Nightmare Moon"

When Luna was banished, Celestia took over her duties. In the thousand years of her absence the ponies of Equestria turned her in to a folk lore-esque type figure and told stories about her.

The best explanation the show has given us is that Nightmare Moon is Luna, but consumed by jealousy and hatred. Dunno how being jealous grants somepony extremely amplified magic, jet-black coat, space-mane, and 3 feet of height but we've had worse villains in MLP (Sombra), so I'll roll with it.

 

Hopefully they'll explain Nightmare Moon a bit better in a Season 4 episode.

She's a lot like... Well she's kind of like Luna's darker side. She took on a different, more managing form when trapped on the moon.

She also wants to make be night forever and things like that.

Nightmare moon is the dark corrupted version of princess Luna. Princess Luna was taken over by dark magic (in my opinion) and now she is corrupted.

You could say that she is the dark side of the moon.

(you know the moon is.......

Nightmare Moon is an astral golem created by Luna as a guardian, enforcer, or replacement that she later merged with. The two were separated by the Elements of harmony.

 

Or at least that's the best way I can harmonize the "Luna deliberately became Nightmare Moon" and "Luna was possessed" narratives I've been given without killing Nightmare or leaving her as a boring flat villain.

I think the first two episodes did a fairly good job of explaining things. It is a cartoon, so you must leave room for magical flights of fancy.
