OC Question

I didn't know where to put this question, so I guess I will put it right here. My question is this. If a recolor of one of the mane six is good enough, can it be considered an OC? I just recently did a recolor, because I am good at recolors, and I don't know how to vector my own OC. I have a name for her and everything. I was just wondering if it can be considered an OC. Now I know that technically I did not make the shape of the character myself, but I am no good at doing that kind of thing. So I settled for the next best thing. I didn't want to use a pony creator, so I just recolored Dashie. I will post my recolor below. Her name is Phoenix Flare.

What do you guys think, can a good recolor be considered an OC?

That's an interesting question, and one I personally believe has a yes and a no answer.

Yes, because just because it's a re-colour, doesn't mean that you've not put time and effort into the characters background, personality and special talents.

But by the same respect, I would also say because it's a re-colour, it could always be seen for what it is - Rainbow Dash looking different and nothing more. I suppose though...that being said, the pony creators are all copies of other ponies too...

Yes. Since OC stands for original character, anything that is not directly from the show is an OC. Which means if I were to draw Twilight with an inverted mane and call it an OC, I wouldn't be lying.

Now, while it is an OC, a lot of people (including myself) hate seeing recolors. But I doubt anyone would say such is not an OC.

Well first of all, doing a recolour is one step up from using the Pony Generator. Sure, it may not be as customized or original as you would hope it to be, and some might even see it as a being a plain rip off, but think about it, you actually need to have some skill and a fair bit of effort to pull off a successful recolour.

Seeing that you've already recoloured RD to PF quite well, how about taking in another step higher on the rung of original OC art if you're worried about it not being original? Since you say you are not good with doing the shapes of the characters, why not start with something a little easier: Get rid of RD's mane and tail, and draw in your own mane/tailstyles. If you're feeling adventurous, erase her wings and draw in your own design.

There's lots of things you could do to make it a more credible OC without having to draw it from scratch! :)

Signature to come soon. I think. Yeah. Once I think up a nice one. Or when someone makes one for me. Damn it. I need more time to draw and animate poni. >_<

I tried that already, it was a horrible abomination. I have no clue how to do anything in the realm of vectoring. Believe me, I would if I could. ;^;

Hello!

Of course it counts as an OC. OC states for "Original Character", so as Firebolt said, anything that is even the least different from the show, can be considered as an OC.

Recolours are a good way to start your OC journey. Later, people tend to give original manes, tails, accessories, etc.

The only thing you could do otherwise, is pay to have one commissioned, like my avatar. The image itself is not a big deal, its a representation of the character you designed, so a recolor, especially a good one like you did, is fine.

I thought of that, I don't know how to go about something like that. I suppose going through deviantart would be the best course of action, right? Now I just have to think up a backstory. The only reason I created this recolor is that a color scheme for a OC popped up in my head and I thought it was a great color scheme. So I made this to pretty much document the color scheme. But then I looked at her and started liking her a lot, and now I want this as an OC. It's just so frustrating somethings.

Yeah, your main OC can be a challenge.

On commisioning an OC, I would go with Brisineo. He is on deviant art, and on here. Browse his work, its amazing and his prices are fair.
