gaming Steam + Linux = Sale

Lost

Soooo...

Just looked at my steam and it seems as-though it now fully supports Linux and in celebration there is currently an up to 75% sale on all games that are compatible with Linux.

Like with Mac, all games compatible with Linux now show an icon:

I personally may set up a partition on one of my drives to have a ubuntu OS running, question though, does it HAVE to be on the main boot drive? i boot (have my OS installed) on a small SSD.

Sounds pretty cool :D. I don't use Linux because.. Well Idk.. :P Regardless its pretty cool, a sale is always nice, anything you've got your eye on in there?

I usually buy any games that i want straight away (hence having 300+ steam games) but i can recommend bastion, its an interesting little game to play and being on sale makes it even more worth buying ^^

I'm to conservative with money to buy things all the time. :P So I really don't have many steam games, I really need to buy alot of steam games I don't have yet... I'll buy them someday.. :)

Bastion eh? I might check it out, thanks for the suggestion :)

You can run Linux off of practically anything. Main drives, USB drives, External Drives, even CD's. However, partitioning it on the main drive would yield the best performance.

I've personally never been a fan of Linux. I always have problems with it, and I find it to be way too much work. Windows 7 does everything I need it to. Why waste resources by installing Linux?

The only reason why there's a sale is because Gabe Newell is DESPRATE to jump ships and switch to Linux. He's doing it because of the Windows 8 app store. He sees it as a threat to Steam. After all, if this Windows 8 app store will let me download PC games and not take away my ownership rights, you bet your ass I'm dumping Steam.

I have about 3TB of internal disk space free, so i figure setting aside 50GB of it for linux to use wouldn't have any impact at all.

There is nothing at all desperate in his action, not many game developers support Linux, with Steam/valve now supporting it we may see a change in attitude for other developers, especially those who publish all their content on the steam platform.

If Gabe were ever desperate he would turn Valve into a public company and pull in loads of money from shares, staying private is giving the advantage of constant sales to satisfy the customers, i don't see why you hate steam so much, yes technically you don't own any game you buy from it, but that is the same with just about any electronic distribution. Windows 8 app store will likely have the same "you don't actually own the stuff" standpoint, after all it is Microsoft we're talking about.

You shouldn’t need to install it entirely on your SSD boot drive. Although i would recommend it for better performance, a Ubuntu install requires only 5GB of space. Either way when installing Ubuntu it should ask if you would like to install it alongside Windows. It should handle things like installing the bootloader on the main drive so you can select between Windows and Ubuntu at start-up. Backup any important data though just in case as its better safe then sorry if you make a mistake.

If you don’t want to mess with partitioning your drive you can install Ubuntu right from Windows with the WUBI tool. just run the installer and dedicate the amount of space you want and set up the main user account. Restart when it finishes and start using Ubuntu. Removal is a easy as uninstalling a Windows Application if you decide it's not for you. You can downlaod the WUBI installer here: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/windows-installer

If you need any Linux help i am glad to provide it for you.

Not everybody has 3TB of internal disk space to piss away. Those of us who don't have it, need to be more conservative when it comes to system resource management. Even if I had 3TB of internal disk space to piss away, I don't like inefficiency, so I probably would be conservative with my system resources anyway.

If you would read my posts and spend time thinking about what I'm saying in my posts, instead of just thinking about arguments to reply to my posts with; you would understand why I dislike Steam the way I do. The fact that you don't shows me that you are not taking my posts to heart, and because of this, arguing with you about it is simply wasting my time. I'm not repeating myself to you, as you're probably not going to listen to me anyway.

You don't like my opinion? Then ignore it. Nobody is forcing you to reply to my posts, nor is anybody forcing you to read them. If you like Steam, great! However, just because you do doesn't mean everybody else will. I don't mind debating ideas with people, but when the other person is not even listening to what I am saying, then I'm not even going to bother, as repeating myself over and over again gets annoying.

This exchange is over.

Actually, they are making the switch because Windows 8 is not conductive for gamers. Hard core and most general gamers have issues playing games because of the setup of Windows 8. It is too bulky, complicated and slow.

I do read your posts and i respect your opinion, it just happens that every post i've made about steam in the past few days you seem to reply with some form of anti-steam argument which is why i counter-reply back.

I have no intention in arguing with you or anyone else on here, i'm simply voicing my opinion and standpoint on the matter, if you took it as arguing then i apologize.

Note that the WUBI installer as far as i am concerned only allows installs for up to 30GB. Its possible to resize the virtual WUBI disk later on to make it bigger but in that case it would most likely be easier to just use the Normal Ubuntu Installer and Choose the Ubuntu Alongside Windows Option or the Something Else(Manual) option if you havent installed Ubuntu yet.

For future Linux installs that don’t require removal of all data when a OS is reinstalled or removed you can use the manual option and separate the root / (OS Install) Partition and /home(User Data) Partition, Just install the bootloader on the first drive and it should work out OK. When you would reinstall you would just reformat the root partition and keep and mount the home partiton so your data is intact after installation.

If dealing with Drives and partitions in Linux it may seem strange. don’t worry its just because Linux does not use Drive Lettering (C:\, D:\, E:\, etc) and uses a mount point system instead. for example /dev/sda indicates the first ATA Device, 'sd' is ATA, 'a' is first'. in /dev/sda1 means the First Partiton on the First ATA disk, and so on and so forth.

The Linux File System you probably want to use for Partitioning is ext4 BTW, while NTFS may work for a data partition (/home), it will not work for a Linux Install Partition (/ root). NTFS is not compatible with all of Linux File Permissions and thus it can cause some nasty issues. I would not recommend even the /home to be a NTFS for this reason.

Once again back up any important data before considering doing any of this for safety, And as always, i am glad to help.

That's completely fair.

I apologize if my response seemed aggressive. There have been lots of Steam-related topics lately, and I really REALLY dislike Steam, I HAVE use it every day, so I can't simply just ignore it. When I'm voicing my take on Steam, I'm not trying to make other people feel like their opinions are inferior to mine, I am trying to convey my take on the platform as well as venting out my frustrations about it. There are a number of people who disagree with my take on Steam, which is fine. However, most of the responses I've gotten were just asking the same questions as previous people have asked. ...Questions that I have already answered. We all have our buttons and pet-peeves, repeating myself is one of mine. After talking about Steam, which already irritates me. Having to repeat myself because people didn't read through my posts because all they cared about was posting an argument in response to them, just adds fuel to the fire.

It's also quite irritating that whenever I say something negative about Steam, people instantly feel obliged to defend Steam. I don't mind debating facts with people, however when I keep getting opinionated responses from people who clearly did not think about what I said in my posts before responding, I get frustrated. Now, I'm not saying your posts are opinionated, and I'm not saying anyone in particular is being opinionated. I'm just saying that the individuals who do post opinionated responses to my posts, irritate me.
