Lost 1,410 February 22, 2013 Share February 22, 2013 Caffeine dependency is a major addiction to caffeine, it is when you've consumed high amounts of caffeine for so long that your body doesn't quite know how to operate without it, so not having enough caffeine will cause withdrawal symptoms (varies from person to person) I have caffeine dependency, I never intended to get this way but I did any way, I tried to quit but I can't, I went 'cold turkey' for a weekend and ended up in serious withdrawal (vomiting, headache, tiredness, seeing flashes, lack of focus, confusion and other symptoms), I ingest roughly 1gram of caffeine a day (studies show that people can overdose on as little as 500mg) So, I know I have a problem, what are everypony's thoughts on caffeine dependency, does anyone else here suffer it? 4 Your friendly neighborhood alcoholic motorcyclist Life is too short to worry what others think of you, be creative, be weird, live life. Caffeine overdose is a caffeine induced heart attack, generally it is fatal, kinda obvious though, caffeine does up your heart rate quite a lot. MelancholicMemory 2,025 February 22, 2013 Share February 22, 2013 I have a cup of tea every once in a while, but that is it. I don't really drink soda, and I never drink coffee. I have severe insomnia, so I don't ever want to ingest something that might keep me awake more. Maybe you should ween yourself off of caffeine slowly? Have a little less every day. In general, I think as a society we have gotten addicted to caffeine, and I think this is a result of how terribly busy and stressed out Americans are. I honestly think our workaholic mindset is a big part of America's health problems, as well as our low overall happiness rating.

Just notices the H.P Lovecraft Necronomicon quote in your sig, great book. I agree, although I'm English, I tend to drink more caffeine on a day that I'm busy doing stuff, every day I drink a few cups of tea and coffee and a 2L bottle of Pepsi Max, but on a day that I attend university I will drink 2-4 cand of energy drink and a Starbucks large (venti?) coffee on top of that. I've tried cutting down but it just causes me to start withdrawal 1 Your friendly neighborhood alcoholic motorcyclist Life is too short to worry what others think of you, be creative, be weird, live life. Harmonic Revelations 8,835 February 22, 2013 Share February 22, 2013 (edited) I have caffeine dependency at the moment. But I have enough willpower to break from it, as I've successfully combated the withdrawel symptoms three times before. I think what I'm trying to say is, I choose to be this way. Mightymags 1,053 February 22, 2013 Share February 22, 2013 I drink a lot of coffee, but I've never become dependent on the caffeine. I've gone days without having caffeine and I've had no side effects.
MelancholicMemory 2,025 February 22, 2013 Share February 22, 2013 Just notices the H.P Lovecraft Necronomicon quote in your sig, great book. Thanks, I'm glad someone finally got the reference I agree, although I'm English, Our cultures are linked pretty closely though, so my point applies across the pond as well. England and the US are both really different from mainland Europe or Asia though, which is why people from, for example, Sweden tend to be healthier and happier than us. I've tried cutting down but it just causes me to start withdrawal Just take it really slowly, and I'm sure you can eventually get back within healthy levels of caffeine consumption. Good luck.
Retro*Derpy 3,185 February 22, 2013 Share February 22, 2013 I used to be dependent on caffeine, drinking soda and coffee like it was nothing. But eventually I stopped for some reason, and a couple years later I go to grab a soda again, and I got really sick. Which that isn't a bad thing exactly, but it is weird how you used to be able to drink something everyday, than never be able to drink it again. Kazuki Fuse 534 February 22, 2013 Share February 22, 2013 I would say I definitely have a fairly major caffeine addiction. I can't start my day without a large cup of coffee and on average, I also drink a 2L of coca cola everyday. I'm a cokehead, lol. Eh? Nandatte? ~Sugar Sprinkles~ 638 February 22, 2013 Share February 22, 2013 Its almost as addicting, just like Cigarettes. Cigarettes do kill people more obviously because the only chance Caffeine can kill you is if you overdose on it, like drink gallons of it a day. I drink at least 2-3 cans of pop a day. We do have water and I have been drinking water more recently. Honestly, it is hard to cut down on caffeine. I tried 2 years ago because I was having these stomach cramps and I did...drink kind of a lot. But, I managed to stop drinking pop for about a month. I then started drinking it again, but I don't drink as much anymore. Like I said, 2-3 cans a day. It used to be 4-5 cans a day for me. Cutting pop is a little easier than cutting cigarettes, but Caffeine is actually a type of drug, because its..good, pop is cheap, and it energizes us. Just yesterday, my Issues in Society teacher is talking about the issues of foods and drinks and that pop isn't the best. I mean, it is not bad to have some here and there, but gallons a day isn't good. I heard on the news, a woman from New Zealand I think?? Drank 2 gallons of coca cola each day and had a heart attack. Honestly, drinking gallons would make me sick.....but still. Also, another fact I learned is back in the day, the Coca Cola company, believe it or not, used Cocaine in their Soda. That's where Coke got its name. Cocaine acted just like Caffeine and they used it because they wanted something different than the other soda companies. Cocaine was then banned (Obviously) Because people got addicted to the powder version of Cocaine. So....I think most people should try and cut down on pop. TRY, because its not easy

Hi I'm yourmomsponies and I'm addicted to caffeine. If I dont get at least one cup of coffee in the morning I can't function. I usually run on A double espresso and a cup of coffee every day. I don't have the withdrawals you get dude. But I get debilitating headaches ,exhaustion and I act way crazier than I normally do. Gone Airbourne 21,977 February 22, 2013 Share February 22, 2013 I had an experience once where I was working a closing shift and I had already been exhausted before clocking in. I had myself one of those 5 hour energies before my shift started and some small cups of coffee as the hours rolled on. *Now after the fact of doing this, this was so stupid...* My body was physically drained and needed sleep but I drank caffeine to try and help me get through my shift. After we closed up I started to feel very jittery and my heart started racing. At the time I had no clue what was going on but I panicked a bit. Once I got home, knowing full well, I could not rest after taking in so much caffeine. I decided to drink some nyquil to help me sleep. Not a good idea at all... God never mix nyquil and a lot of caffeine and that was one horrid night. But being addicted to caffeine like any addictions must be very hard I can't even begin to imagine. -Nobody- 519 February 22, 2013 Share February 22, 2013 Yes. I have it. As for ODing on it, I haven't ever gotten near ODing, so maybe I have a high tolerance for caffeine. d: Without caffeine, life feels... different. Like slower, and I get headaches sometimes. I also drink like a 2 liter of Mountain Dew a day. I'm just nobody at all...
Dark Fox 151 February 22, 2013 Share February 22, 2013 Mr. Lost, are you a big guy? If so, you are most likely not experiencing anything close to caffeine overdose. http://www.energyfiend.com/death-by-caffeine If that site is to be trusted you'd need like 100 cups of coffee...So unless you weigh 100 pounds, I'd be pretty impressed if you're chugging enough brown coke to kill you...That said, I'd go for the slow weening off method, or find a new bad habit, like toddler punching, purse snatching, or god-forbid, watching "The big bang theory"
A Glimpse of Everything 129 February 22, 2013 Share February 22, 2013 I drink whatever, I don't really ever think about what I drink. I like to drink pop such as Pepsi, Coke, Mug Root Beer, Mtn. Dew, etc. I actually have excessive drinking (I drink any liquid in large quantities at a fast speed without thinking about it). There've been a couple times where my blood sugar was VERY high and my blood felt like it was at an abnormally hot temperature. Wingnut 6,994 February 23, 2013 Share February 23, 2013 While I've never had the symptoms the OP reported, I do believe I am dependent on caffeine. I have a great fondness of coffee and normally drink 3 to 4 cups during the course of a day. It's very hard for me to function efficiently without it. Kitty Cat Moonshire 629 February 23, 2013 Share February 23, 2013 Caffeine doesn't do anything for me. In fact, it does the opposite of what it's supposed to! It actually calms me, and then later, when I'm supposed to have a crash, I get super hyper. My brain defies science. Buck yeah! 1 Make sense? What fun is there in making sense? Celtore 2,770 February 23, 2013 Share February 23, 2013 I don't have a dependency built on caffeine, the only thing I drink with caffeine is my tea and that really can't be helped. I'm just glad that my drinking habits are simply a few cups of tea compared to my friends' dependencies on energy drinks.
Starflower 323 February 23, 2013 Share February 23, 2013 Been there. Done that. I drink up to two cups of coffee a day now. I started drinking coffee since I started this semester with my morning classes. Then I skipped it during the weekends, and during days that I go to school in the afternoon. Bad choice on skipping days, however. After I suffered from day-to-day headaches and severe tiredness, I started to drink coffee everyday, and...well, that seemed to cure the problem. xD I do think I have an addiction to caffeine, and I do have dependency. I don't think I'll get away from it though
Creamy Arty 6,252 February 27, 2013 Share February 27, 2013 The amount of caffeine in a cup of coffee can vary by the type of coffee and its method of preparation, but estimating 105mg in an 8 ounce cup would be somewhere near the middle of the range. Drinking 8 cups a day isn't uncommon for me, and sometimes I drink more than that, even up to 12. So I drink nearly a gram worth of caffeine on a daily basis and sometimes more. My body is so accustomed to high amounts of caffeine that it rarely affects my ability to sleep anymore. The worst withdrawal symptom I've had to deal with is a moderate headache which disappeared in under two days. Given the ease with which I withdraw from caffeine and that I don't crave it when I haven't had any in a while, no, I don't think I'm dependent on it. Up From The Ashes 56 February 27, 2013 Share February 27, 2013 I've drank so many soft drinks and cups of coffee and tea over the years, it barely has any affect since I'm so used to it. I honestly don't see where people are getting OD'ing from it, unless you talk Monster or Rockstar. Then, blam-o goes your heart if you drink too many.
