Slam Poetry

Recently I've been inspired to listen to a lot of slam poetry and even try writing my own (with varying success). George Watsky's poetry was the one that really got me into it, but here are a few of my favorites I wanted to share. Seriously, listen to these. They will blow your mind and make you see things in a whole new light.

George Watsky - "Go Big, Young Friends"

Katie Makkai - "Pretty"

Sierra DeMulder - "Mrs. Dahmer"

Marshall Davis Jones - "Touchscreen"

Omar Holmon - "I am Nerd"

Taylor Mali - "What Teachers Make"

Panama Soweto - "I'm Taking My Ball and Going Home"

Anyone else have any amazing poetry they know of to share? I'd love to hear any you know of.

I'm not sure if this qualifies, but I wrote and presented this back when I was a senior in high school. It's called "Ode to Dirt Kids" and the teacher only let me read until the end of the fifth stanza before making me sit down.

When white flakes fall down

You’re filled with joy at first

But then you remember that you’re inside

And you realize the worst

That a dirt kid next to you

Has quite the itchy head

And he’s chosen to scratch it too

It be dandruff that he shed

Oh, all those dirt kids

Why is it they can’t see

How their awful smell

Is no one’s cup of tea

Every dirt kid in the hall

Is desperately dodged by me

When I pass one I want to bawl

They’re a ghastly sight to see

To shower only once a day

Is usually the key

But going without for weeks at a time

Makes them smell like pee

Oh, all those dirt kids

So disgusting and crass

The odor coming off them

Smells like a lot like someone’s… feet

When I see their grungy hair

All plastered down with grease

I think to myself “how can they bear it?”

Why can’t the war on hygiene cease

There has got to be a reason for all the nasty stuff

I do not know the how’s and why’s

But of their grease there is enough

To cook a quite salty batch of fries

Oh, all those dirt kids

They’ve got me in quite the funk

With their unimpressive ability

To smell just like a skunk

A dirt kid’s breath is mighty bad

And their toothbrushes go unused

Their dentists must feel quite sad

To be so horrendously abused

And if a dirt kid asks you to pull a finger

You’d better run away instead

For if you do decide to linger

You’ll wish you’d ended up dead

Oh, all those dirt kids

With all their nasty stank

When I try to think of why

I always draw a blank

But, I guess, there is a perk

Of those dirt kids rolled in mud

For with all of them around

I look like quite the stud

But of all those dirt kids

It still does me dearly vex

How they can’t comprehend

Why the restroom is not for sex

There’s got to be a better place

For those degenerates to crash

And then proceed with their so-called

Horizontal monster mash

Though my condemnations may seem undue

Too all that dirt kid traits apply

I have nothing against their personalities

So pretty please don’t cry

There are many things they can do

To prevent a broken heart

The first thing is to use shampoo

The second, not smell like fart

And so finally at last

Those dirt kids now all know

They can leave it in the past

And refrain from stank “fo sho”

It was totally worth it.

Hmm i think I feel where your teacher is coming from... I mean it seems like to me your talking about someone who doesn't have much to live off it and your just ridiculing it... thats how i see it.

Basic hygiene is not difficult. High schools even have showers they can use everyday for free. Some people go for months without showering and it's gross and inconsiderate to everybody that has to be around them.
