My laptop freezes up, hangs, and crashes whenever I try to upload, save, or open files, whether it be from the web or some regular applications. The only programs that don't do this are Paint and Photoshop.... it's very annoying.

Hey big guy, want to ask you something. When someone reported something, will the report automatically appears on your place?

They're instantaneous, yes. If you report something that's out of my area though, like anywhere in Octavia's Hall or Beyond Equestria, then I won't be able to see it since I don't have authority over that sub-forum.

Windows 7 64-bit, AMD Athlon II P320 Dual-Core @ 2.2 GHz, 3 GB RAM, 297 GB total hard disk space (208 GB currently free).

And my video card is an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 with 256 MB dedicated memory if that's important.

Not the most amazing specs ever, but they're far from terrible, so it's nothing to do with that. I'd say you should try a few things:

- Defragment filesystem

- Move everything (that's personal files, not system files) off your HDD, reinstall Win7, migrate everything back again

The latter of which being more of a second-to-last resort rather than something you should try right away. The former of which is simple, Start > Search Bar at bottom type "defragment" and pick "Disc Defragment", and in the open window that pops up, tell me what the fragment percentage is under the C: disc's entry. If it's something like 50% or more, just defrag the disc right then and there.

Oh, would it also help to know that my laptop's a Toshiba Satellite C650D?

Shouldn't have any impact on this situation; were it hardware or driver issues, then yeah ;) In this case I'm thinking it's most likely your laptop hasn't ever been defragged and you've saved/deleted a ton of things in the meantime. If not, possible registry fuck-up or the HDD might be going.

Unrelated,

I had my old hard drive replaced in late April due to it burning out. When it burned out, the laptop wouldn't boot up and a black screen would appear with the text "boot device not found" - since then I've been using a brand new hard drive, though just last month my laptop wouldn't open files for crap. I tried cleaning out the registry with some software, though that didn't help my cause other than the fact that I could view pictures again. I will try defragging this time around.

Yeah, you would've needed to replace that old HDD -- a "boot device not found" error means that the boot partition of the HDD has been tampered with.

Are your drivers for the new HDD up to date?

Yep, it's up-to-date. I'm still at a loss to how or why my old HDD burned out, though - of all the things I did to it, the amounts of time I usually spend on my laptop and such, it's hard for me to believe that it would suddenly refused to boot up one day.

I don't. Manufacturing errors are usually at a 3-sigma rate when it comes to HDDs so there's a small, but possible chance you're the unlucky one with that crappy HDD.

Anyways, what does that defrag menu show for the C: drive? I'm not really suspecting that to be the issue anymore considering you switched HDDs not too long ago, but who knows.

I've opened up the program, with the options "Analyze disk" and "Defragment disk". No percentage meter anywhere. Am I on the right track?

You should be on the right menu, then:

The percentages should be in the middle list part of the menu ;)
