Those were cosmic horrors, better known as the Great Old Ones. The are ancient deities that were sealed away. One day, the stars shall aid in their escape, and they shall unleash unspeakable horrors upon humanity. There are many of them besides the few I posted.

They kind of sound like the Titans from Greek mythology.
