I've noticed some similarities (at least thematically) between these two...

It all began with the forging of the Great Elements.

Two were given to the Unicorns; immortal, wisest and fairest of all beings. Two, to the Earth Ponies, great miners and craftsmen of the mountain halls. And two, two elements were gifted to the race of Pegasi, who above all else desire power. For within these elements was bound the strength and the will to govern over each race.
 

But they were all of them deceived, for another element was made. In the Mare in the Moon , in the fires of Mons Agnes, the Dark Lord Luna forged in secret, a master element, to control all others. And into this element she poured all her cruelty, her masochism and her will to dominate all life.

One element to rule them all.



One by one, the free ponies of Equestria fell to the power of the Element. But there were some who resisted. A last alliance of Unicorns and Pegasi marched against the armies of the Mare in the Moon, and on the very slopes of Mons Agnes, they fought for the freedom of Equestria.

 

Victory was near, but the power of the Element could not be undone.



It was in this moment, when all hope had faded, that the alicorn Celestia, daughter of the king, took up her father's sword. And Luna, enemy of the free ponies of Equestria, was defeated.



The Element passed to Celestia, who had this one chance to destroy evil forever, but the hearts of alicorns are easily corrupted. And the Element of Power has a will of its own. It betrayed Celestia, to her downfall. And some things that should not have been forgotten were lost.



History became legend. Legend became myth. And for a thousand years, the Element passed out of all knowledge. Until, when chance came, the Element ensnared a new bearer. The amulet came to a shopkeeper Tom, who took it deep into the tunnels beneath the floorboards of his shop, and there it consumed him. The Element gave to Tom unnatural long life. For five hundred years it poisoned his mind; and in the gloom of Tom's store, it waited. Darkness crept back into the forests of the world. Rumor grew of a shadow in the sky, whispers of a nameless fear, and the Element of Power perceived.

Its time had now come. It abandoned Tom. But then something happened that the Element did not intend. It was picked up by the most unlikely creature imaginable. An illusionist, Trixie Lulamoon of the Magician's Alliance.
 

 

For the time will soon come when magic tricks illusions will shape the fortunes of all...
