mycarhasaMoustache 449 April 26, 2013 Share April 26, 2013 This needs a 1 word answer NO that is all. Look at how much fan stuff Hasbro has taken down and then compare it to how much has remained untouched. I bash Hasbro for being evil every now and then but really they are quite fair. Fighting is magic was becoming too professional and since the creators did not have permission to use any of the TM stuff Hasbro had to draw the line somewhere. On the other hand Double Rainboom dose have permission to use the TM stuff and as a result has not been taken down. To sum up No Hasbro is not trying to shut down the fandom they are just running a business.
FoxyCryptid 4,330 April 26, 2013 Share April 26, 2013 Likely they weren't going to do anything even then, but had their hand forced by Gameloft. Basically Hasbro had sold a license to Gameloft for MLP games. Likely the language of that license was extensive enough that Gameloft made the case that Fighting is Magic was an infringement on the *license*, when they found out the game was up for EVO, and Hasbro had to respond or face being sued by Gameloft. And since the lawsuit would point out that Hasbro wasn't defending their IP as stringently as the copyright/trademark laws require, Hasbro would therefore be in even worse shape. Hasbro has let a lot of stuff slide that they didn't have to. On average they only seem to get involved when a fanwork starts infringing on something that they've already sold a license on, and in most cases they just send a polite 'please change the way you'r doing this' letter. For example, a lot of the custom- & fan-made plushie- makers got letters asking them to take down their price lists. Not to stop doing the commission work, but to stop making it look like they were mass-producing stuff. There's only been a couple of confirmed Cease and Desist letters that I'm aware of, one for the infamous Lyra sex toy, and the one for the Fighting is Magic game. There may have been a few others. No Hasbro doesn't hate us. At worst they don't care, unless we do something stupid. They're very twitchy about their IPs, rightfully so given that they already lost a chunk of the G1 MLP IP back in the day because they misunderstood what exactly they were doing when they converted to G2 MLP, and sold most of the G1 molds rather than destroying them or archiving them. This, you just said everything i was thinking so I wouldn't have to, and did far better then I ever could. There was one more C&D, but that was on a Magic: The Gathering/MLP card game project and based on the Magic IP part of it, not the MLP one. And that last part explains all the G1 knock-off ponies at Dollar Stores and such. "You know, I don't know who or what you are Methos, and I know you don't want to hear this, but you did teach me something. You taught me that Life's about change, about learning to accept who you are, good or bad. And I thank you for that." -Duncan McLeod.
wheeblebumps 23 April 27, 2013 Share April 27, 2013 (edited) no they aren't the reasons i would say as to why they aren't are they are a corporation. what are the goals of Hasbro? to make money.. that's the endgame, a good product that doesn't make money looses the company. they wont 'crush' bronies, we in effect are a massive source of revenue, and not just out of our own pockets, we are also a form of controversy, controversy (if you remember Modern warfare 2) generated free publicity and increased sales, in the end, we are a net profit for the entirety of the hub, and Hasbro if they were to attempt and 'crush' us, they i don't have faith in how much longer they will last as a company. If you REALLY think they are out to get you, go buy Hasbro stock, in the end, the stockholders are whom they report to, so if you really feel that you are underrepresented, or being attacked, go sink money into their stocks. Even looking at their stock price history shows evidence of the impact of mlp;fim, before the release they were hovering around 25 per share. after the release? (2010.2) they had reached 40, then plateaued in 2011 at 50 per share... DURING A RECCES ION they are in effect doing MUCH better than most entertainment companies, ESPECIALLY considering the economic circumstances. corperalking 1 August 8, 2014 Share August 8, 2014 I believe they aren't trying to shut us down, but they dislike us. I mean, sure they gotta defend their trademark, but Hasbro has apparently declared that they will not tolerate fan content unless it directly profits them. Some things they shut down would have just brought them more attention, like Fighting is Magic, but they shut them down because it doesn't directly profit them, screw all the work our loyal fans do. And all the things Lauren Faust wanted to do that would have made the show SOOOOOOOO much better, Hasbro denied because money and encouraging stereotypes. Like Queen Celestia. They're trampling their artistic vision. Hasbro sucks. The writers of FiM DON'T suck, but Hasbro does.
PonyFan101 30 August 8, 2014 Share August 8, 2014 Don't forget that six year olds will grow out of mlp a few years later. They do not actively participate in the brony community. Mlp lasts as long as dora or sesame street for them. With bronies, we will be here years after the series ends.
Inkscape 113 August 8, 2014 Share August 8, 2014 Yeahh.. Noo. Hasbro LOOVES us. I mean, they even had a Rainbow Dash Cameo in the new Transformers movie. That's a shout out to us, because no 6 year old girls are going to be watching it. 1 fim4ever.tumblr.com epitomefox.tumblr.com
Celli 4,338 August 8, 2014 Share August 8, 2014 Uhh, no? They're just trying to protect their IP. Though, if recent news from what I've heard is true, then they really need to reform their legal department. Seeing as how Hasbro never knew about Jan's Button Mash videos. Solid 1,327 August 9, 2014 Share August 9, 2014 (edited) No. They are just trying to prevent ppl from making money off their products or getting reputation without giving them credit. Not to mention several fan stuff are not actually directly C&D'ed by Hasbro itself, but by its law firm, which often goes out of control without Hasbro's acknowledgement... Frosty Flurry 173 August 9, 2014 Share August 9, 2014 There's no way they're doing that. Just copyright stuff and protecting the younger audience. Remember it's still targeted towards little kids. Anyway if they even tried they would have an equivalent of an army armed with pinkie pie cannons coming there way!
CosmicHooves 2,705 August 9, 2014 Share August 9, 2014 (edited) Yes. And after they shut down the fandom they are going to commit mass genocide of all Bronies. This is because everyone knows that Hasbro is controlled by an evil cult. ... ... On a more serious note, no. I don't think Hasbro would try to get rid of us. I mean, look at all the money they make off of us. Edited August 9, 2014 by Emerald Starlight
Moved to Elsewhere 11,331 August 9, 2014 Share August 9, 2014 Ok I'm tired of people saying Hasbro is trying to destroy the fandom all because of some C&Ds. Look I'm not saying the US copyright system is perfect but you kind of excpect them to do that to protect their company. Also if Hasbro is trying to shut down the fandom, then why have workers at Hasbro gone to brony conventions and have shown on their twitters that they pretty much love us. I mean , we have gotten them the most money in a long time. Also, wasn't it confirmed that it wasn't Hasbro themselves but their legal department, who was completely unaware that their company is lax with fan projects. If anything, they should just inform their legal department about this. Bottom line, some people just over react when saying Hasbro hates us. Ashen Pathfinder 16,161 August 9, 2014 Share August 9, 2014 There are no attempts being made to 'shut down' the fandom. Doing so would likely hurt Hasbro's credit. Honestly, all they're doing is protecting copyrights which is perfectly within their right and, IMO, totally reasonable. Yeah, it can be harsh and unfair, but that's how it works in the US. Hasbro has to protect what belongs to them and, in the end, it can seem unfair to some of us, but...again, that is how it works here. They're trampling their artistic vision. Hasbro sucks. The writers of FiM DON'T suck, but Hasbro does. No untrue. What people don't know is that Hasbro doesn't shut down stuff. it's their legal team, and Hasbro doesn't get to dictate entirely what they do. Their Legal team has no care for us in the world. Hasbro does like us to some extent. They are even trying to work out a deal with Jananimations (they got C&Ded) so that they could animate again to some degree. The reason they ask the writers to do stuff is cuz they believe it will make money yes, but they are a company, not artists, they do what they think will make money cuz that is their job :/ Over all hasbro is probably one of the most lenient companies when it comes videos and fanwork. if say Disney controlled the show... they would be barely any pony on Youtube and all fanworks on Youtube, even the minor animations and songs, would be gone. Hasbro's legal team tends to go after the big stuff, and usually Hasbro themselves don't hear about it.
Plonkett 345 August 9, 2014 Share August 9, 2014 People can say that Hasbro is one of the most lenient companies all they want, but that means very little when the ones who have the power to take down content are a completely different story. I also believe it was because they technically took a product that represented the MLP franchise (their stuff) into a major video game tournament without their permission, which would set anyone off. TheDarkMysteryMan 670 August 9, 2014 Share August 9, 2014 They can do whatever they want with this fandom. I honestly could care less about it. All I do in parts of the fandom is just admire the work and the stuff they make. If you're talking about bronies, then I don't care either. I'm not o me of those because being called a fan was here before that. 2 Signature created by: Gone Airborne Imagine if you will being on your death bed – And standing around your bed – the ghosts of the ideas, the dreams, the abilities, the talents given to you by life.
