Im both, and Bronies and Furries are not the same thing. I can see why someone that didnt know much about one, or the other (or both) would think that they are though.

"you'd tell them just the same that their opinion is tactless because they haven't seen the show to know it in the first place, in that it's got some decent plots and all?"

lol, plots

Ok bro, since I am so uneducated in furries and bronies, can you make me detailed explanation as to why not? Nobody has in this thread. In mind of that, I see no reason bronies are not.

Well, in my eye Bronies main thing is that were Fans of Friendship is Magic. Furries are into anthro animals. Sure both fandoms have very talented artists, writers, and muscians. In all there very similar, but

its center of both fandoms that make us different from one another.

I would have probably said plot too :P

Hmm... yeah, I'm still not won on that :(

Yes, you tell me Furries are into anthro animals.. and aren't bronies at all interested in ponies? Then what are they? Because most I came across seem to love ponies, make OCs, and cosplay as them..

I'll illustrate where I'm coming from:

Furry - To actively fandomise animals. There are 101 ways to be in the community, whether it be in fan forums, fan art, fan music, roleplay yadda yadda.. all the same as bronies..

I'll follow along with your suggestion.

"Fans of Friendship is Magic TV Show" ie. random watcher who thought it was good, alternately compares to, "Fan of Animals in General". Which could be any zookeeper, kid, or veterinarian. You wouldn't call a random who liked the show a brony (depends on your definition of brony, but most commonly, it's referred to only those who delve directly in the fandom) just because he liked an episode, and you wouldn't call a vet a furry just because they like to work with them. Let's make the distinction clear. These people are a fan of the entity itself.. so a "fan of FIM" could just like the show, and not because of the ponies. I wouldn't think many would accept them as a brony until there is involvement, but I suppose the definition of brony is its own argument but bear with me here..

Then we got the next tier, and that'd be what we describe as "The bulk of the Bronies" who don't just like to watch the show like they like to watch Wheel of Fortune or Friends on a fortnight, but they actually get involved in the community, and partipate in fandom. Furries are a as well, a community & fandom, which separates them from the people who are "Fans of Animals" back in Tier 1. Same with "Fans of the Show". We got bronies who have OCs (just like furries), fanfics (just like furries), porn (just like furries), and the physical community (just like furries). They parallel so much.. there is literally no deviance I see here.

Except.

The main premise that keeps everyone feeling bronies are not furries is the fact it stems from a TV show. Pretend MLP was a book. Like Wind in the Willows, and I drew fan art of them all the time. They're anthromorphic to exact degree as MLP: (limbs proportionate to actual animal... like Faust's FIM style ponies). Yeah, MLP doesn't wear clothes all the time, but they wear dresses, Rarity even actively makes them, and some ponies wear clothes like DJ Pon-3 goggles all the time. Much like furry anthros do.

I'd like to add to that, that anthropomorphic doesn't mean "only human proportions", that's just what pops up a lot because the porn for it is more attractive to the human beholders who like le breasts and what not.. So why, why does it being inspired from a show not make it a fandom of an anthropomorphic equine creature? Nobody can say "Oh, but we only like ponies". Yes, and we got people who love wolves and wolves alone, and so they're not furries anymore now? My Little Pony is in no grey area...

Anyway, I don't mean to throw all this explaining just at you alone, I suppose I'm really directing this out in the open to anyone reading by who disagrees, because yeah, not one of the posters in this thread who argues against bronies being furries has actually explained why. You know I'd be happy if I could believe furries an bronies aren't related, it'd make bronies less of a subcatergory I suppose? I think thats the other thing bronies are scared of, just being "subbed down".

So what I'm getting out of all this is like the square can always be a rectangle but a rectangle can't always be a square sort of thing?

Like all bronies are furries cause they like ponies and the community but not all furries are bronies because furries don't necessarily watch my little pony. But then it depends how you define "brony" and what qualifies someone as a "brony"

People and their labels, you guys are the reason life is so complicated lol

Hey man that's cool, and I appreciate self-awareness! Though hey, although to argue is dangerous, there's nothing harmful about debate - debates are a healthier thing than an argument (well when held with discipline :P)

I like peaceful debating myself, but like I've said before, I can be a might bit stubborn at times. Even though I actully hate to argue bout anything!

Yeah... that's definitely it. It's awkward  I was meaning to search to see if the forums here have a thread about "At what point are you a brony" to get an idea of what the general consensus is.

Labelling does get suckish, but it's what drives people together though - otherwise, how'd we all unite? :P We could be called MLPers or something, but the name wouldn't change anything because we still enjoy MLPs. Either way, Furry is considered a dirty word despite its implications, and that's why this apartheid of opinions will still stand..

To be honest that's kinda what I thought of people who call themselves furries before I read this thread, and I thought bronies was a similar label before I started watching the show based on some videos and images and stuff I've seen - like they just wanted to pervert the animals.

I think most people just classify themselves bronies if theyre a male fan of the show though, at which point it would be wrong to say that bronies are furries as you'd be making the assumption that they watch the show for the ponies. But you might have a point that bronies are more than just fans though, like they're involved in their own community and really like the ponies themselves whether it be their design or personalities or whatever, in which case I think you would be right.

But yeah... I guess labels aren't all bad, they only become bad when people start making assumptions about the people that are labeled; and for labels like "furry" and "brony" and even "nerd" or "jock" that are so vague, I suppose it's only natural that they migrate towards a negative connotation because the negative parts that shock and disturb people always get the most attention. That's why I tend to stay away from labels, I hate when people make assumptions about me

Interesting....Several people are in fact, both Furries and Bronies, I guess that makes me a little more normal then, Yay! there are others like me!

Now I need a name for a Furry/Brony cross, just to see what people think it should be called. Not that it's really important, I'm happy enough calling myself both, Would be interesting to see what you guys think of though.

Anyway, keep it coming! I'm getting some brilliant ideas forming now about how things should go down.

So what I'm getting from here is exactly as Hollowshield said earlier. Though, I still don't quite get that cause (going from the info in this thread only and a small Google search -nothing indepth-) I don't care anything about the ponies anthropomorphic qualities. I don't feel any part animal at all, but 100% human in mind and spirit. I don't participate in its fandom whatsoever. And I don't care for anthro animals at all.

There is no way I'm a furry. So, all bronies =/= furry.

Right then, yeah, I can see clearly your views here. Good 'oh.

Only thing is, I'm part Furry and I don't think I'm an animal at all or anything like that. I think you may have got some bad info on there. Anyway Nice shot at the names, I quite like 'Furbro' It's better than my previous 'Furony' So yeah, I'm now an official Furbro (But mainly Bro!)

Thanks yet again for your input. It means a fair bit getting all these views, especially ones like yours which are well explained and bulked up.

I lied, I'm awake!

Anyway, I'm kinda used to people just assuming so that's fine, at least you didn't assume the 'Dark' side of the Furrdom...R34 Ahoy....Aye, it annoys me so much that Furs have become infamous for things like bloody hentai!

I wonder what thinking you're an animal is like....Weird I guess. I'll ask my dog at some point, she'll know what it's like, she's almost always a dog! ^_^

Anyway, stuff!

as i understand it, furries are people who see them selfs as animals

Whoa, whoa, hold the phone! I'm a bit of a furry myself (being a huge Sonic nerd and liking anthropomorphic animals), but I'm pretty sure I don't "see myself as an animal". No, in fact I don't at all.

Now to the topic at hand: I wouldn't label bronies and furries as the same. No reason as to why, but I just wouldn't. I don't see too much of a similarity between the two groups except for the fact that they both have to do with animals.

It's ironic how I fall just to get back up again...

Oh, I knew about the R34, but I never classified all of them as that. It doesn't even bother me, honestly.

I don't understand how people can live with themselves hating a group and not even knowing enough about them. ;-;

Bronies in general are into imagining, creating, and/or roleplaying anthromorphic characters.

Just want to say this bits here, some MLP fans never created any OC, let alone roleplaying.

Bronies by definition are those who watch and like MLP, not roleplayers

Actually yes, I think bronys are furries in my mind but like being a brony you have to adopt the name. In other words bronys arent furrys unless you think so. Then deffinition of furry, in a nutshell, is slightly humanized. Talking animals it's a step towards humanization So really all bronys are borderline furry.

I've also seen a lot of references to the furry community be mentioned as completely NSFW. Other then through MLP I'm not a furry, but becuase I have furry friends that actually disappoints me that so many of you give into sterotypes. The deffinition of furry Meens anthro, or just slightly humanized. So if you watch shows like gumball., iggy arbuckle, or one of the billions of other cartoons your a furry. You don't need to take an interest in animal porn to be a furry.

I'm actually beginning to agree, they are just labels after all. But they are kinda important - without them we wouldn't know what anyone was. I agree that they aren't worth making a HOOOJ fuss about though, a bit of an argument is fine though, and in the end it's all down to opinion, isn't it?

Labels are very important things, they keep us organized and simple. Without them you would actually have to ask if they like my little pony. Imagine how terrible that would be! So yes labels are important and they are important. Your reaction appalls me.

Shortening sentences is the only thing labels are good for. They bring more bad, such as false stereotypes and biased judgement on others based on those false stereotypes, rather than good -- the shortening of sentences. Saying, "I am an otaku" can be taken differently by many. First of all, many wouldn't know what an "otaku" is, second, people in different regions use terms differently. For example: People in Japan use the word "otaku" to describe a no-life, fat, (typically) male person, who obsesses over 2D women and is just at a point of ridiculous extremity. In America, the word "otaku" could be taken as someone who simply likes anime. Really, I just find labels to be too confusing and too misleading to actually be effective, that is, as long as we're sticking to the social labels. Labels like, "Police Officer" only make sense. Personally, I like slower, more in-depth conversations, so the shortening of sentences, lack of detail, and lack of opportunities to branch into other subjects to have a more full conversation just really makes labels seem like a stupid thing to me.

Actually, the label itself means nothing. But when someone mistakenly describing brony as "loves anthropomorphic character" rather than "who watched MLP and like it", that really rustle my jimmies

It doesn't feels very good if your group was equated with something... less
