Okay, so that new mean chick in the trailer...

Has the exact coloring and cutie mark (on her shirt) as that Sunset Shimmer toy people have been speculating about. .

I'm guessing Sunset Shimmer is a pony, or WILL be a pony. Maybe she'll be redeemed?

 

I wonder though, maybe Sunset Shimmer won't actually appear in S4 and is just exclusively for the movie. :/

Sunset Shimmer's Equestria Girls design was floating around for a while before the trailer aired, and it definitely looked pretty legit, so it's nice to see this confirmed now.

 

 

I like the idea of her as an antagonist, and she's probably the one who stole Twilight's crown, but I'd really like to see her in pony form in the show, so I'm hoping she's not pure evil and that she'll redeem herself in the end.

 

Edit: Also interesting to note is that in the trailer at about 37 seconds in, you can see that there's two photos of Sunset Shimmer. The one on the left in which she looks very nice and friendly, but she looks mean and cruel in the image on the right. The images also show her wearing different crowns. So, maybe there's more to her than just being a jerk? I guess we'll find out.

I knew Sunset Shimmer was going to be something ever since I first saw her design (a Hasbro Pony that's not a recolour? This must be something!), and both what was then the 'potential leaked image' and McCarthy's tweet that she 'won't be in S4' was a huge pointer in the direction of EqG.

 

Unfortunately, I have a massive allergy to high school cliches, and from what I've seen from the trailer, this generic mean girl character does not appeal to me at all, although I guess it's kind of interesting that she's the villain, if the backstory on the toy packaging is true. Still, perhaps it would have been funnier if they'd put Trixie in her role

With the Pony toy already being out, i definitely feel that SS will be redeemed by the end of the film.

Going back to Equestria and being in pony form. Wouldn't make sense for Hasbro to make the toy and not use her in the show in that form.

That is what I call a huge coincidence. I am pretty happy to have an antagonist in the movie but, sadly she won't appear in Season 4. I guess she will be a pretty good villain, since she is exclusive to the movie.

AT has romance up the wazoo, several very bad and stereotypical villains, and a lot of weak episodes. It lives on the fact that most of the time, the writers do a good job, and on a few great twists, and heartfelt or witty writing.

X Men is different though. It's a mutant academy and they learn to use their powers to benefit other people. In EG it's only for the sake of shoving American high school drama propaganda into the minds of young girls.

Tell me, have you ever heard about the comic series W.I.T.C.H.?

 

Typical "American high school drama" is a big part of it. Probably as big as the magic part of the stories at times.

 

 

Yet the comic is absolutely splendid(or at least was prior to issue 90- they have abandoned their long story arcs for shorter stories). Heck, there were books released that delved deeper into the psyches of the characters.

 

 

The series have a lot of things in common with MLP(even down to the friendship theme of the series, and that their powers don't work right when they don't get along), but overall carries out most of those things better(their magical arcs>>>the FiM adventure stories, and their "highschool drama"? Arguably stronger than the Slice of Life FiM).

 

 

Buck the neighsayers- highschool drama can be done right, and be compelling.

 

 

Heck, I can easily back up an argument in favour of W.I.T.C.H. over FiM about which can carry the friendship theme the strongest.

Chrysalis is just awesome. She's a throwback to what made 90s villains so great. She better be in seson 4 or I'm lowering the score of the season despite whether or not it has good episodes. She has an iconic look and the changelings are the coolest thing in the show, Hell I like them better than the ponies

I don't see why it matters. This is going to be a Twilight movie. The other 5 ponies aren't even the real versions of them. Proving the writers were to lazy to put effort into anything else at all.

I'm personally interested in the potential in what's been revealed thus far about SS, particularly the information on her toy's box claiming she's an old student of Celestia's.

 

My working theory is that she was her student during that turbulent period a thousand years ago; she was investigating the mirror/portal thingy on the other side when Sombra was defeated. Due to the crystal empire's dissapearance, SS ended up getting trapped in the human world, and had to learn how to properly survive there as opposed to just dropping in for some research. She thought she was being locked out or ignored, and grew bitter.

Due to time flowing differently, a few years for her is a thousand years in Equestria, and so by the time the Crystal Empire returns, she's been pretty much completely forgotten. SS returns to this, and to find she's apparently been replaced by this 'Twilight Sparkle,' and is rather less than pleased. She enacts a plan to lure Twilight back to the human world and trap her there, and that's where the movie starts.

 

I could, of course, be entirely wrong, but I think that there are a lot of interesting possibilities with her character if they take that route.

Sunset is awesome, and is probably one of the main reasons I feel excited about this movie. Amid all the controversy and negativity, including my own wariness (though I will see this movie with warm expectations), I'm curious what her story is.

 

Why is she still a teenager for one? Even if she was directly Celestia's last apprentice, shouldn't she have aged to be much older then high-school? Unless she went through the portal as a filly. Perhaps she feels resentment toward Celestia, or doesn't remember her and grew up badly...there are all sorts of reason for her antagonism despite the nice image her toy represents.

 

I still expect however that she will be ponified and brought back to Equestria...or maybe not, and she will remain on Earth. Either way, I do expect her reformation by the end of it.

I keep seeing this and other creative theories kicked up, but I doubt that anything all that clever is going to happen.

 

This movie is aimed at promoting going to High School. Proms, meeting people, hanging out, having a crush, etc. are good and important things that the younger viewers should be excited about doing one day. When a gussied-up Twilight inevitably defeats Sunset at her game of Prom Queen, this will be presented as an entirely valid proof of her superior character, not merely a cynical ploy to get the crown and get out of there.

 

Yes, you could make a movie where the High School setting is some sort of mental projection, illusion, or trap, but that would demean it to merely being a place, and a bad place at that. It wouldn't be the kind of movie that would be aimed at the target audience.
