Since the purpose of this topic is to provide other members with tips and feedback to help them improve their drawing abilities, I felt it much better suited to be here in Creative Resources.

 

With that said, I think this is a very interesting topic idea and I think I might just jump in myself soon.

I want to participate! I find this a bit unfair, as I have to use my touch screen, but oh well. Never again will I draw at midnight.

 

Hmm, I dont think your image worked Ash! Drat. But that's okay, because the important thing here is the practice! And as long as you've done that, then you get my brohoofs

 

Image seems easy to do and it has been a while since I tried a sketch.

 

Don't worry! If you find the Applejack too easy, you will be glad to know the next drawing is slightly more difficult. But only slightly! I'm going to take things slowly But the difficulty will increase for sure. You'll see!

Ok so I went ahead and tried to do a digital version of Applejack.....I used Paint.NET for it so I have nothing to say about  it except DERPY EYES!

You won't get teased. No one teased my first drawing here except for me. So I highly recommend just trying this. But if you don't want to, I'm not gonna force you.

You know, I love to draw and I've begun the drawing out the image...but I think it's been an hour or so (probably 1 hr 15 mins-ish) and I've only just finished her head ._.

At this rate, I SHOULD be finished by the time the new image is uploaded

Well, suit yourself. But know that if you aren't willing to try, then your current state will forever remain. If you practice, you will get better. Lauren Faust said that a person must get through 10 000 shitty drawings before they start to get good. It takes time and of course you won't be perfect. But I promise that no one will tease you... This place is a brohoof hoarder's heaven. Everyone is welcome and appreciated.

 

But I would hate to force you to do something you're uncomfortable with. If it's embarrassment, you don't need to post your sketch. You can draw along behind the scenes! Or if it's just that you are nihilistic towards this, then I'm sorry this thread doesn't sound like fun to you (no worries though, I understand).

I think I have done more than 10,0000000 drawings. and No progress has came at all.. I'm trying but, it's just the anger I get when I look at my drawing and think "What the hell is that o.e?" I've tried to search on Google 'How to draw ponies." I've tried just the face, full bodies etc. It's just I don't know. I need major help anypony have any advice!?

Well, I finished up my sketch of Applejack.

Only took me around 2 hours...

 

Just annoyed at how her muzzle isn't flat enough, her eye is a bit wide and that her hair pushes out too much, other than that, I think she came out quite well.

Can't wait to see what image you have in store for us next D1SC0RD

Alright, um, I decided I would make another attempt because I enjoyed drawing my first one and wanted to give it another go, and I'm quite surprised at how it turned out!

 

 

Looks a lot more like Applejack than my last one did! And I'm glad more people are joining in, this is pretty fun! Can't wait for the next pony!

Holy...You sir, can shade. That shading is amazing! You make it look so easy and it really improves the quality of your drawing. Very VERY good job.

Why, thank you. Such shading isn't very difficult when you get the hang of it... Just don't be afraid of shading your picture (even a tiniest little shadow can add a lot of depth to it), and make a lot of experiments. If you're having problems, then I'm sure there's plenty of tutorials on that matter (I in fact didn't read any of them )

Well perhaps. But for now, I think is is very important that we learn canon ponies. That way, we discover proper proportions and correct anatomy before moving on to something as finicky as style. Plus, using canon ponies keeps this thread user-friendly and as un-intimidating as possible. I think I'll keep it going like this for a while....

I don't know how to upload my pic... can  someone enlighten me please? For now the pic I drew is my current profile pic, I "totally" didn't take two seconds on it and"totally" dodn't draw it badly especially not on purpose or anything.

That's not what I mean. Perhaps I didn't make myself clear enough. My idea is that in a few weeks, instead of asking people to replicate a picture, you should ask them for example to draw AJ bucking a tree, while giving them current AJ picture for reference. My point is that you won't really learn much by only copying...

Ah, I see now. You mean applying knowledge as a form of practice. Yeah, that is a very good way of practicing.... given that you understand the anatomy.

 

The images I put up will force people to explore things like base shapes, skeletons, angles, poses, etc. I think that people need to get a feel for these things before they go off and do what you speak of. People will learn from recreation if they look at anatomy resources while they draw (this is a reminder for you all to check out some of the links on my first post, if you already haven't...). If people draw the images I post while experimenting those guidelines/tips, realizations will be made, connections will be drawn, gears will turn, sparks will fly, and above all else-- people will learn.

 

Hate to disagree with you here, but I think what I am doing now will be beneficial for people who want to learn the basics. Maybe once we get those down, then I'll do some challenges like the activity you suggest. Thanks for the idea! I will keep it in mind for the future.

 

And if people are bored with drawing the reference image as it is, then feel free to go the extra mile and change up the pose or whatever. Don't be afraid to play around!

There's two ways to share your image on here , one is to upload it via Attachment while the second is to hot link it. Select whichever method best conveniences you. 

 

Attachment method

 

 

Before each post you have the option to upload an attachment and apply it to your post. You cannot do this via quick post and requires you to use the full editor. After mashing some keys together I made a quickie for uploading attachments. 

 

 

Here's an example uploaded successfully to the MLPforums server.

 

 

 

Hotlink method

 

 

Hotlinking is when you link an image from another host such as Deviant Art or other websites which you can upload your goodies, such as imageshack or photobucket. For this quickie I'll be using my old avatar once again.

 

After you've uploaded your image to another host (such as DA) be sure that you copy and paste the source of the image, not where the image page is. To find the source right click the image, select "Open Image In New Tab" and copy the url up top. Once you've acquired that, click the "Picture" image (It's below the Emoticons and Text Color buttons) in your full editor and it'll ask you for the URL. Simply paste and your image will show up.

Well, seeing as Tenebris decided to do a little shading to his, I decided to take a crack at shading my sketch as well.

 

Sad you can't really see much of a difference (especially since I'm using a camera that does the picture no justice whatsoever. And the fact that my lighting has changed *night-time*). Oh well, may as well post the "results".

Don't let it bug you mate, it's takes quite a bit of time to getting used to ones own style. It'll be more welcoming as you continue to draw
