Lyona opened one eye. " What is it?" She asked rather grumpily, and coughed weakly.

 

-Am I going to get any sleep at all?- Lyona thought, slowly standing up. She stretched her wings for a moment and cracked her head. 

 

" Is there a problem?" Her eyes were fully open now.

"I'm sorry ma'am..." he said then quickly added." I must talk to you... ur... alone if possible."

 

Cinders ear twitched.

 

'Aha! That's it! Cinderblock you genius!' she thought, her confused frown turning into a grin. 'He likes Lyona! That's why he's so... grumpy recently, he's worried about her! Heh, and they call me oblivious to these things...'

 

She still couldn't sleep, but at least now the lead weight in her chest had eased up a little.

Silver Note motioned Lyona aside where he hoped Cinderblock wouldn't be able to hear them.

 

"Ma'am... ur... Lyona... you asked me before if something was wrong and I have to tell you.... admit that I... well I lied. Nightmare Moon came to me in a dream, two actually if you include the out of pony experience I had while unconscious... and told me that If I want my cutie mark to return I have to tell the truth."

 

He paused for a breath, his throat sore but he had to get this out. He inhaled deeply. Here goes nothing he thought.

 

"I'm sorry I lied, I was too afraid to tell you the truth! Afraid you'd just be disappointed in me. I didn't leave to take a leak, I was running away because I didn't feel good enough to be in the Royal Guard and felt I was messing up the mission. I was going AWOL... and if you have to stable Marshall me when we get back for that I understand. I turned back because... well the mail mare came and she gave me this...."

 

Silver handed Lyona a letter which said "To Silver Note from Derpy Hooves" on the envelope.

 

"I think it's for you, perhaps from Princess Celestia with more instructions. Now that you have it, I can head off. I'm not abandoning you guys... I'll make sure they send you a better equipped pony to replace me. One that's not clumsy and wired looking, and who takes the mission more seriously than me... Please forgive me Lyona, Cinder doesn't.. and i can't face her any more. I know I screwed up."

 

Silver hung his head and drooped his ears on either side of his head, waiting for a good sounding out from his commanding officer.

 

"You deserve it Silver" he told himself.

Lyona looked at the envelope. ​She read the sender and recipient, and looked up again.

 

" Silver, it for you. From Derpy Hooves to Silver Note, it says here. It's yours, not for me."

"For me? I don't know a Derpy Hooves... and I...." Silver hesitated. He'd never admitted to anyone before that the was illiterate. He'd always fudged his way by, taking oral exams with the excuse that he got too nervous doing written exams. This element of honesty thing really sucks! Silver thought to himself. He glanced at his damage cutie mark. Was it really worth all this to try to get it back? What the hay! He had nothing more to lose.

 

'I.... I can't read" Silver admitted.

Silver sighed with relief. Lyona wasn't mad. Not like Cinder had been.

 

"That's what I've always said about everypony. You're right, nopony here has said anything about the way I look, not even Impetus! He's alright though. I'm starting to like him. I just... grew up with a lot of other ponies making fun of me. I really only joined the Royal Guard for the uniform. It hid my coat. Well at first anyway, then I learnt to love the Royal Guard because it meant serving Equestria, in my own small way." Silver coughed. Too much talking when you have a sore throat! Would he EVER get his voice back? he glanced at Lyona concerned. Would she ever get hers back? He decided not to bring it up. She'd only put up her usual brave front and get defensive. He would worry from a distance.

 

 

 

" I didn't know how to read until I learned how, either. And I learned only last year, when I joined the guard. Do you want I read it for you?" She offered. 

 

"Would you?" He said hopefully, his ears perking up and pricking towards Lyona

Silver Note knew that Lyona was right. but he didn't exactly feel mature at this moment.

 

"The past still hurts" He said sadly. "Sometimes, you start to believe what everypony has told you til the truth becomes so blurred you aren't even sure what it is any more. Princess Luna said the truth was suppose to set me free. But I don't feel free. I just feel... trapped in a fog!" 

 

He watched intently as Lyona unfolded the letter.

Silver Note blinked at Lyona.

 

"It says that?" he asked. "Who in Celestia's name would write that to me?" He glanced up at the skies, looking for the mail pony. She was no where in sight. Accept who i am? Not possible! I'm the most unacceptable pony in all of Equestria!"  he thought to himself... not realizing that the expression on his face was giving away every secret thought inside of him.

 

 

A tear? Oh no! Silver resisted the urge to bolt!

"That's beautiful!" Cinder said, supporting herself on one hoof, completely forgetting that she was supposed to be asleep: that this was supposed to be a private conversation...

 

It wasn't her fault they talked so loudly, no pony around seemed to have any subtlety...

 

She clapped a hoof to her mouth, realising that she had spoken.

 

'Uh oh. Whoops.'

"It says that?" he asked. "Who in Celestia's name would write that to me?"

 

" I assume the mailmare is the one who wrote the letter. The one with the bubbles cutie mark, I think. You want to keep the letter?" Lyona asked him.

 

She heard Cinder speak, and turned to her with a small frown. " Really, Cinder? Eavesdropping? I thought that you were sleeping."

"I think Silvers mad at me, I didn't want to stir up trouble..." Cinder winced. "Can't sleep. And you can't honestly expect me to not listen to what's going on around me in here."

 

She waved towards the trees around them.

 

"Sorry ma'am, sorry Silver, it's been a rough day... night... whatever..."

Lyona walked away back to her little hole in the ground. -Finally. I can get some sleep. I'm so tired I can sleep forever.- She yawned, eyelids drooping. She coughed again, wincing. -I'm using my voice too much.-

"Urrr yes, please. I want to learn to read it for myself some day."  Silver Note shifted from hoof to hoof uncomfortably. He now realized that not only had Cinder heard the entire conversation, or at least the last half of it... she now knew that he was a stupid colt who couldn't read! and her so smart about science and things that he'd never understand.

"Sorry ma'am, sorry Silver, it's been a rough day... night... whatever..."

 

"Mad at you? I thought you were mad at me? For running off the way I did... I know it was stupid. I really AM a feather brain....." he lifted his wing looking at the damaged flight feathers sadly. " I wish I could just fly away" he thought to himself.

 

 

 

Lyona walked away back to her little hole in the ground. -Finally. I can get some sleep. I'm so tired I can sleep forever.- She yawned, eyelids drooping. She coughed again, wincing. -I'm using my voice too much.- 

 

"Thank you for listening, rest easy" he said to Lyona as she walked away. He wanted to hug her... but, well he wondered if that wasn't appropriate for a soldier and his commanding officer besides, he wasn't good at hugs. Nopony ever hugged him!

" You two go talk it out. I'll see ya'll later. You better sort it out by the time everypony else wakes up." She yawned and settled down in the little dug-out hole. Lyona closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep.

 

(It's morning now, actually. The went through the fog and everything during the night. They should wake up by evening time.)

((Poor silver, that was the saddest thing I've ever read!))

 

"Night ma'am." Cinder nodded.

 

The light was blinding in her sleep deprived state but she didn't want to drink another mixture so soon after the sleeping potion.

 

"Feathers, you know why I was mad at you?" She said heavily. "About a year ago, maybe a little longer... I let a friend down. Badly. I didn't do anything and she got hurt: she was trying to save me even though we barely knew each other."

 

Cinder sniffled a little. She rubbed her eyes - buck this morning glare.

 

"Then Minty went missing, then you did... It felt like the same thing all over again and I felt so useless! Then you just trot back up like everything's fine!"

 

She shrugged, hating herself for it.

 

Of all the habits to pick up...

Silver studied Cinderblock's expression. Is she holding back tears? He wondered. blaming it on the sun... just like I do. His heart was touched by the words she spoke, her pain which he felt as if it were his own.

 

 

 

"Vengeful Celestia Silver, I was worried about you!"

 

 

'I'm sorry Cinder, I didn't mean to worry you." He said honestly. "I'm sure your friend understood, we can't always be perfect all the time. We have to work at it every day, just being ourselves, like the letter said. Even when we do make mistakes, it just helps us grow into better ponies. The most important thing is that we stick together as friends, and that we are there for each other even when we do make mistakes. Despite them!

 

"Is my voice coming back" thought Silver. Yet the more he spoke, the more confident he felt in his ability to do what he did best. encourage others. With words and song. Goof up? Not this stallion! He knew what his cutie mark meant even when it was damaged. Nothing and nopony could damage the person he was inside.

 

"Nightmare Moon told me to be honest,' Silver continued. " and I tried being honest with you and misunderstood your reaction, but I think really, the hardest person in all of Equestria to be honest with is ourselves. Knowing who we are, and where our worth is... You're worth Cinder... is greater than ten thousand bits. No one else can stand in your place and fill your horseshoes. We need you... I need you! You're one of the most wonderful mares I've ever met!' Oh my gosh did I just say that to her out loud?

 

Silver felt a tingling around his flank, there seemed to be a light illuminating it and he watched in awe as his cutie marks repaired on both sides. His flight feathers seemed to be bathed in light too and the damaged feathers transformed back to their former glory. That's it? I had to be honest with myself?

 

Silver gazed up at the sunny sky looking for Derpy. Where are you little mail mare? I think you just saved my soul.

 

He smiled at Cinderblock saying "Her words were beautiful weren't they?"

 

Then quietly Silver Note began to sing a song that poured straight out of his heart.

 

She gave me hope

When I had none

She helped me stand

When all I wanted was to run

 

Just one kind word

Sent from on high

And suddenly I found my wings

And knew that I could fly

 

How come nopony else has

"Uh, Feathers? I know your really happy, and I know your trying to be quiet, but I think Lyona is going to kill you herself if you wake her up again..." Cinder grinned cautiously at her friend.

 

'Funny, I just thought Derpy really liked muffins...' she thought 'Good job Cinder, now I want a muffin.'

 

"Thanks Silver, I'm glad your back."

 

'Thats it? He reaches an epiphany, gains a deeper understanding of himself, raises your spirits and sings a whole song... And you say 'thanks'?'

 

What am I supposed to do?

 

'Hay if I know, your talking to yourself in your head, did you expect useful input?'

 

She settled for standing around like an idiot, not out of choice, but from focusing too intently on her own thoughts. Blinking and shaking her head again, she stumbled to her feet and gave the Pegasus a quick hug.

 

"Feeling better now, thanks. Still can't sleep though - need to blow something up. In going to head over to the river, shouldn't make too much noise over there."

Waking from her long sleep from last night, walking with the group during the nice morning routine. '' I guess everypony had some tensions to work out. Luckily, I'm pretty calm and not mad at anypony. So, I guess I came at the wrong time.''

Staying on her guard just in case of any danger or a new enemy coming out to try to attack. '' Well.. I guess not.'' Fireblaze said.

He felt like he was about to faint! His knee's were extremely weak and even if he had still had damaged wings, he was sure he'd be able to fly even with out them! 

 

"I think I swallowed a bug!" he said nervously. It certainly felt like something was fluttering around inside.

 

He watched as Cinderblock retreated towards the river and noticed Fireblaze awake. "You didn't let off any fireworks just then did you?" he asked her in jest. She reads my thoughts anyway so she knows exactly what I'm thinking He thought to himself. HI Fireblaze! he added in thought.

 

Then he turned his tail and pranced off to the edge of the woods, not going TOO far from everypony else.

 

I'm suppose to sleep now? Not a chance.

 

Silver simply grinned from ear to ear and decided to have a good old fashioned roll in the sand!

[The Elusive Cinder 1,328]

It was a delicate process: chemistry.

 

Her bottles lay on the ground beside her, the clear goggles were back where they should be. Cinder held a vial up to the light as she carefully allowed a drop to flow from another glass container. As it landed, the liquid fizzed, ever so slightly.

 

Such a delicate process.

 

Setting one of the vials down against a rock, she took a third - this one filled with a fine, metallic powder - and added a small amount. The chemicals turned a brick red colour. Carefully, The earth mare dropped a tiny amount of a green liquid into the bottle...

 

WHUMPH!

 

A blast of smoke knocked her clean off of her hooves, engulfing her in a thick black smog. She laughed, rolling in the smoke.

 

What in Equestria had possessed Cinder to take up chemistry, she would never know- but she loved it.
