The Outstanding Music Quality!

Comet Tail

Okay, I used to cringe at songs in movies and shows because I found them cheesy, then I realized that it's really a form of expression, you know, an art. That was a long time ago. Most shows, never mind cartoons, would never even imagine having their characters break into song - with the exception of High School Musical, and that's a musical!

But MLP has done it many times, and each time, or at least a few specific times, I've really been astounded at it. I mean, I'm like Rainbow Dash when it comes to style (ep. 10 - Swarm of the Century), she can't stand to hold still, it bores her to tears almost, it's just painfully boring. So I'm really surprised I like The Art of the Dress, from the design perspective, I really can appreciate it now - I'm more of an engineering mindset, I love to come up with ideas, design systems that work, etc. And I can see how designing a dress, even though it doesn't fly, go to orbit, or sink aircraft carriers, it's still essentially the same: coming up with an idea and making it into reality through hands-on material manipulation.

But no, sorry about the digression, what this is really about is the quality of the songs.

Winter Wrap-up (3:18 long),

http-~~-//www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzqWUy6jZJg&feature=related

Art of the dress (4:12 long),

http-~~-//www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSbXGsysAAk&feature=related

At the Gala (3:07 long),

May the best pet win,

etc. etc.

Those are just my favorites. But, think about it, these songs, not only are catchy and musically great, but the lyrics are musically great as well, and they don't just make sense, they also convey a story.

And not only do they convey a story, but they do it through the voice of different characters, while all the characters remain completely in-character, without skipping a beat. There's even some humor hidden in the lyrics, like in "Art of the Dress", at one point it says "Thread by thread, primmed and pressed, Yard by yard, never stress", and in a chorus-like repetitive manner it ends with the same thing, but "always stressed" XD. (And the song has almost no repetition at all! The closest thing to a chorus only comes twice, and the second time is a parody of the first!)

"At the Gala" even manages to change the entire musical tone of the piece to match the personality of each character as they have their parts!

And all along, the music itself is like Broadway-quality stuff. I mean, honestly, this stuff puts big music studios to shame in my opinion. This stuff is what I'd expect on Broadway, especially "Winter Wrap Up", not a Saturday morning cartoon!

My little pony is a little like watching a play, and the music definitely embodies this!

S.V.R. Stop. Violent. Recreation,

I know it's tuff but let's all try to stop playing violent videogames, violent TV, violent thinking, and just violence in general.

Put "SVR" in your signature if you support Stop Violent Recreation!

Yeah, the full-on songs are really great. Daniel Ingram is very good at what he does. Me personally... I'm a huge fan of William Anderson. He writes the background music, and is the reason we have things like this:

I know, right!? I didn't know they had the background music on youtube! Oooh, I'm so excited, I LOVE the background music to the show! Sometimes I'll be watching, and I'll start listening, then I'll suddenly realize I haven't even heard the last bit of dialog because I've been listening to the music XD It's absolutely brilliant! :D

This… 200% this.

It’s great that the show integrates such musical talent and goes deeper than just forming boring tunes that sell products for Hasbro. Conveying songs through the characters, while sticking to their own ways of thinking and attitudes, really shows that the studio cares about preserving characterization while creating musical works. And agreed, it’s definitely a higher level of quality than expected for a morning cartoon, but I suppose many things are like that in MLP’s case.

I agree, the first thing I did after I started to watch the show was to download each and every song and copy them to my phone, Ext. HDD. and my Int. HDD. on the stationary computer - I really love the songs that this shows come up with. And I too used to hate characters bursting into singing and dancing aswell, but MLP changed that for me - Celestia, I am glad I found this forum :P

note: I really like the song the cutiemarkcrusader sings in the competition, even though it sounds bad, I find it fun to listen to each and every time I listen to it, other than that I like becoming popular, art of the dress and winter wrap up best.

I'm in your boat, EASA. I HATED when characters bursted randomly into song. Especially in Disney movies. I'd usually just mute the TV until it stopped. These songs, however... are catchy and they get stuck in my head. Art of the Dress is definitely one of my favourite songs. And the Super Squeezy Cider song especially is Broadway-quality. I could see an actual Broadway musical having that song in it. I know it was probably referencing one, but it was such a good reference on its own that it could make a plausibly good musical.

In other words, the songs are well-put together and not at all cheesy.

On the topic of background music: best background music is "discorded rainbow" and "celebration of harmony"

On the actual topic: I agree with you completely. At first I skipped winter wrap up and at the gala.... But then I actually watched it and.... O.o IT WAS SO AMAZING!!!!

And "balloon garden" is very creepy

It's a fan rip of season 1's music, including "cleaned" background music and everything. There's even a FLAC version. :D

Once again, you put things so well Doctor. I totally agree! My two bits comes from Flim and Flam's song. Before either of those two even opened their mouths, my mind shouted "The Music Man! . . . Oh now I know where this is going." After the first internal thanks to my father for showing me classic films as it allowed me to catch that, I realized something. "Wait! They actually referenced that! :o" I mean I'm no expert, but that's pretty dang obscure! So in addition to everything you said, the creators were able to make a classic film/play shout out in the form of two characters AND a song!

Really my Youtube account exploded after becoming a brony! This fandom is the sole reason I have I created folders other than "favorites"! (I wanted to post more! I can't narrow down the songs in how good they sound!)

Thanks! That compliment means a lot to me :D

Lol, I thought the Flim Flam song stretched on a bit, and I did have a sneaky suspicion that it was referencing something. It just seemed like it :P

I'll give it another shot sometime. ^_^
