I was curious. Who's fault it was that started Nightmare Moon in the first place and the whole period between it or the "war" people tend to think happened before she was in the moon? What happened before the entrapment in the moon? What really lead to those events?

So: Who's at Fault?

I came to believe that Luna, but then when the spoiler happened, I thought Celestia. Despite the way that they say that she handled it, by trying to calm her sister down, but how long? She didn't seem to take very long. I can almost imagine that Luna probably felt horrible since no pony cared for her reign as much as her sister's, and without any consulting or much talk about the subject to Luna herself, maybe Celestia didn't know until later when it was too late to help?

I thought of this situation as well, being a big error that could have never happened being that it seemed like one just never got appreciated and if the ponies themselves learned they probably wouldn't have done it again.

Well Celestia probably could have talked to the ponies about Luna's feelings before she went evil. Maybe tell them to host a celebration in Luna's honor so she would feel loved by the ponies. The whole reason she turned into Nightmare Moon was because she thought everyone loved Celestia more, and hated her. Don't really no who's more at fault, but I do believe Celestia could have done something more to prevent it.

Both. Neither. There's no point in blaming anyone specifically. Celestia should have respected her sister's wishes more, and Luna should have told her how unappreciated she felt. Luna shouldn't have flipped out and refused to lower the moon, and Celestia shouldn't have banished Luna without trying harder to end things peacefully.

Yeah, Luna got portrayed a the bad person, but overall It must suck really hard to not be appreciated at all and have all your hard work on the night ignored by everypony :(!

Celestia that stupid bitch. Oh instead of talking to my sister and sorting things out, I'm gonna burn her lazy ass with elements of harmony and banish her into the moon for 1000 years!

IDW spoiler

I think in the comics Luna was possessed by (I think) the Nightmare Forces because they caused her jealousy to consume her (Have not read them yet)

So that would mean that it is Luna's fault because she let her jealousy get the better of her. However, she never wanted to cast an eternal night meaning she isn't an omnicidal maniac. And it's pretty hard to negotiate with someone when they're

possessed

But I do think that Celestia probably could have solved it better if she were more powerful.

LUNA because she wasn't grateful for what she got and she acted like a big baby.Luna lived in a great place and was one of the most powerful ponies in Equestria but just because ponies slept at nighttime she had to complain and try to keep eternal darkness, good one.

Things are much more complicated than what's often let on, we'll most likely get an answer through the comics or throughout the animated series. I know that Faust has mentioned something about Luna being influenced by malevolent spirits due to her resentment of the day of but I can't find the screen cap. As for who's at fault? With the current information we've acquired I'd have to vote for both sides being responsible.

Luna could have thought about it rationally BUT her inexperience due to being younger is a huge factor as for why she went through with what she did. Celestia had a responsibility to her citizens and couldn't jeopardize their safety, she also could have done something worse than banishment for a thousand years. No matter what you may choose to believe who's at fault, they both suffered in the long run.

P.S. have some ancient screen caps of what Faust has said about Luna and NMM. It's like it's 2011 and I'm on /co/ again!

This is something almost everyone LOVES to blame Celestia for; I agree it's not a black and white scenario, but I will have to say the majority of the blame must go to Luna.

Was Celestia not entirely sensitive or aware of her sister's feelings and could have done more to help her feel more appreciated? Quite possibly. But did feeling under-appreciated give Luna the right to go ballistic and try to create eternal night, dooming the ponies to freezing and starving to death? NO.

Celestia had to follow the principle of the 'needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few'. Just imagine what it felt like for Celestia to do that. Just because the show has not yet properly conveyed what it felt like for her doesn't mean she didn't feel that way. Are you really sure she doesn't feel any kind of guilt? That would make a create scene for Celestia to gradually but eventually break down over the whole thing, angry at herself and blaming herself, even though the fault was not entirely hers.

I disagree, If Celestia decided not to banish her for 1000 but for like 2 years, she wouldn't have turned mad, thus becoming Nightmare Moon.

I mean could you stand living on the moon for 1000 years!? Come on, doesn't make sence!

Both Luna's and Celestia's, you cant just point a hoof at one you must at both. why? Because, Luna got up set because of the others not loving her night (like myself I LOVE night, I go on night walks for hours!) so she got all butt hurt, when should could have talked to her sister about it and maybe even asked the good ponies why don't you love my night? Like you love my sisters day? no she gets all mad and becomes nightmare moon. Celestia had seen that her sister was getting upset but did noting and when she did try and fix it well it was just to late, Luna hated her and all the ponies so much by then, if Celestia had just asked her sister "what's wrong?" so much sooner well nightmare moon would have never been around. So don't being point a hoof only at Celestia and hating on her!

You know I don't think Celestia had a choice. I mean they raise the sun and moon right? So when Luna is about Celestia is usually asleep. Shitty situation but not much chance for conversation or heart to hearts. By the time she noticed something up with Luna she was too far gone. Nightmare Moon was dangerous and would not listen to reason so Celestia banished her. It was a difficult and hard decision but not one she wanted to make, she had to.

Luna on the other hand. It's understandable why she was jealous and I believe she was possessed by it so NightmareMoon isn't entirely her fault? It's just a bad situation that happened that both sisters suffered from. Neither is at fault.

I believe it was Celestias

At the very least she could have made an appreciation day for Luna like nightmare night but not that way or a day of they year that ponies should saty up all night to celebrate Luna hard work.

But nope Celestia did no such thing to ever make peope show some appreciation to her sister

^ Umm Celestia isn't Luna's mum, she is her sister and they are equals. It's not her responsibility to force ponies into appreciating the night, and it's not her fault that Luna had a hissy fit over it. And it's not like she forced ponies to appreciate the day either. They just liked it more because it was when chores could be done and ponies are mostly daytime animals. Luck of the draw. I mean I know it sucks for Luna that the ponies didn't like her night but that's hardly Celestia's fault.

Ya didn't read any of the content contained within the spoilers, did ya? Well whatever, choose what you wish to believe, I'll stick with my own guns. It's just a bit rough headed to believe that a minute and thirty seconds is enough to fully explain every little detail for the reasons why Luna become NMM and things transpired as they were. Who knows, maybe you are right, but we'll most likely find out in the future. If Hasbro and the FiM team don't take the opportunity to explain this in an episode/comic then our head-cannon will remain true.

It didn't help even the ponies of present day didn't know her. I think her position is that of some common mythology. Its like the Greek story we heare about in school. Zeus has the sky, Hades the underworld, and Neptune the sea. I think its kinda like how Hades didn't WANT the underworld and possibly, despite his wealth, wanted to rebel. Plus, he had the bad draw.Luna deserved to be recognized like any ruler whether day or night. It wasn't that she had no reason to be the way she had, she was quite possibly overlooked that bad. Seeing how no pony seemed to recognize her and didn't even realize she would attend the festival, it would sadden you. Also, she can see dreams and sort, I'm sure she can see when she's not recognized. It would kill you to own a mark and yet have it mean nothing.Celestia does her job fine. That would sorta crush me too. It may not be her job, but she's her sister, she's supposed to attempt to get her sibling lightt. She's not going to entirely not see her, she can see her pain, she just did her job though.

Luna. It's really awful to be underappreciated, but you can't go crazy if something like that happens. I wouldn't put the entire blame on anypony, but if I had to choose, it'd be Luna.

They both failed in some pretty significant ways. Celestia should have listened to her sister's feelings and Luna should have tried to come to terms with her feelings instead of attempting a hostile takeover. We won't really know for sure what happened until season 4, though.

My thoughts are pinned on Celestia for some reason..I think I can explain it.
According to the prologue of MLP FiM, it was evident to Celestia as to why Luna didn't make way for the dawn, but as it seems, Celestia chose not to take action before Luna became Nightmare Moon.
My gut tells me that Celestia was a little inconsiderate on her part...but I might be proven wrong in season 4.
It's not fair for me to think this way, but i'm only assuming for now.
