MLPForums Phanact 1,374 July 28, 2013 Share July 28, 2013 (edited) By now, if we've spoken then you know I enjoy gaming but recently I've been noticing a lot more hatred towards Brony's. My steam profile only has one thing related to Bronyism and thats #MLP in either my name or profile. Most people used to ignore it but I've noticed suddenly that people have been really verbal about their problem with MLP and when questioned on they usually come back with the fact "It's a TV show for 7 year old girls" which is true for the target demographic, but who is to say what you can and cannot watch? I'm going to provide some screenshots of people I actually considered my friends, suddenly and randomly jumping on my case about MLP. I'm the one with un-blurred name, I felt that because I'm still associated with these people that I should try and respect their privacy. Apparently the fan-base is full of pedophiles? Granted their will be some who are but there will be pedophiles who like The Simpsons or Adventure Time. Sorry, how have you proven that? This is the shoutbox of a gaming community I'm a member of. We usually post YouTube links of songs we like in here. I posted "Helping Twilight Win The Crown" and this is what I was greeted with. I'm fed up of haters towards brony's in general but when a gaming community bills itself as "welcoming absolutely everyone and anyone" and as "a friendly community" and then pull shit like this, it really upsets me and I take it extremely personally. If anybody else has screenshots of abuse towards MLP then please post them here and we can talk about this. FoxyCryptid 4,330 July 28, 2013 Share July 28, 2013 (edited) There's a reason I don't have to deal with this bullshit. I make it no small secret that I don't want people around if they're going to act like pricks. They all know to show some respect or get lost until they learn to. It may seem harsh, but it means those that stick around are the ones I can depend on. I've personally really never known a gaming community that is 100% welcoming. Some gamers, not all of them, are going to be haters and ragequitters with a lot of pent-up anger issues and only really get along with those types who like the same games as they do and at least don't have an attraction toward anything they themselves don't like. That's been my experience at least.

That's been my experience at least. I admin and run servers for the community in question and I try to be welcoming to everyone who are respectful to others but when the owner and the high admins are saying shit like this to me, I don't know why I should even bother helping them at all. I hate being bitter towards people and I am usually quick to move on and forgive but this has really upset me as it is people who I considered to be my best friends. If their going to treat that way, you have reason to do anything for them. It sounds to me like they didn't have much respect for you in the first place and just wanted you to do stuff for them. Good natured teasing and giving each shit is one thing(heck, me and my friends and family do to each other all the time), but accusing you of being a pedophile(in a round about way) is crossing a line, a big one. Gigapony 650 July 28, 2013 Share July 28, 2013 And here's a prime reason why I don't and never will get into online gaming, or the gaming community in general. And I felt this way long before I was ever a brony. The lack of maturity or respect towards anyone is... staggering. Online gaming is one of those examples of people overestimating human nature. They all expected it'd be an awesome fun community of fellow gamers playing together and making new friends. What we are left with is a den of overgrown children doing anything and everything they can to make themselves feel superior to everyone else, and anyone who does come in with an ounce of maturity and a desire to have a friendly and respectful gaming session is laughed off and ridiculed while they all circle-jerk each other. No sir, I get plenty of abuse in the real world, I don't need it on a bloody video game.

That, it's the reason I rarely play online games unless it's with people I meant IRL, or elsewhere online and get along with. I'm very picky about what sites I'm a regular on. I've found it's usually the retro gaming/emulation and modding sites with the good communities. Scootalove 10,689 July 28, 2013 Share July 28, 2013 I think that is why I try not to have any pony pictures when, I'm playing video games because I just choose not to get a lot of hate from anyone that is not like me. Besides, I already remember the last time that I had to deal with a person older than me making fun of me. Luckily, I'm not dealing with that again. It's like someone having an avatar with The Muppets on (which an ex owner had) and ridiculing them because it's a show for children with Puppets. Which they don't, they are blind to the fact that people have the freedom to watch whatever TV show they want to. 1 Credit: Moony © Forum FAQ Forum Rules

Its like, WTF, why advertise yourself as a friendly community D: Exactly. And it's also the reason I don't even play with my own "real-world" mates online any more. They all fit the stereotype of the immature gamer and start flinging racist slurs, immature jokes, and ridiculous taunts that are clearly not meant to be fun ribbing or busting-chops but an attempt to antagonise (and often uncalled for as the other team hasn't said anything first). Quite frankly it's embarrassing to be on the same team. But why should I not be able to have a Pony avatar without being ridiculed by other people? It's a TV show. It's like someone having an avatar with The Muppets on (which an ex owner had) and ridiculing them because it's a show for children with Puppets. I just don't understand why people insult people for liking a GOD DAMN TV SHOW. And people still can't get this through their heads. We haven't joined a bloody cult. We haven't started a political party. We've turned on the telly and watched a half-hour cartoon. That's it. That's our crime. Everyone else can like whatever childish cartoon they want, and it's completely OK for them because they hide behind "nostalgia", or the fact it's a "nerd-approved" franchise, or they pull the "oh, it has adult jokes" card, but ours is not granted the pleasure of such immunity. Ours is a crime against nature. I get that not everyone likes the idea of a "girly" television show. I get that it's not everyone's cup of tea. But the level this hatred for a simple television programme has attained has gone absolutely beyond ridiculous. When do people draw the line?

They can be friends with you one minute but when you log on to CoD or whichever other multiplayer game online, you become their enemy in that instant. Some don't even refrain from saying rude things like "Haha I just raped your anus" and other things of that nature, which is seriously annoying. Lume WMj 228 July 28, 2013 Share July 28, 2013 *giggle* I like those hater people... They're pretty funny, trying to insult the others based merely on a TV show they watch. Seriously, I don't mind when I'm "attacked" by haters in an online gaming community! It's true that it may get annoying as the insults may get worse and worse, but I also don't even bother replying to them. I would waste my time trying to lecture the ignorant person, explaining the whole fandom and why it's a nice show and all of that. Sometimes I even play along, you know, jokingly pretending to be a "pony freak" and laughing with everyone else~ 'cause at the end of the day, no one can judge you based solely on you being a brony. If they're wrong, don't get upset and try to prove them wrong: that's what they want. They're trolls after all. Just stay cool. Don't let them laugh at you, laugh with them instead. Y'know what I'm saying?~

I just want to be friends with everyone and keep them all happy so for now I'll ignore them but if this continues I'll be leaving the community. This. I understand what people mean when they say "use the hate and throw it right back at them by pwning them" but what if I don't want to be aggressive about it? What if I don't want to pwn anything, and I just want to play? I'm not a competitive person, I like to play competitive games in the spirit of fun and camaraderie and friendly competition. I don't see why it has to become the ego-stroking match it inevitably becomes. I'm just tired of having to be on the defensive at all times. I would really like to just be at peace and be who I am (like everyone else who has "acceptable" interests) without having to constantly be on my toes or actively ignoring someone (which isn't ignoring, IMO) or coming up with ways to "dish it back out". I don't want a fight, I don't want to be better, I just want to be on the same level as everyone else. Why's everything always gotta be a grudge match? Why does someone always have to walk away a winner or a loser? It's a game, it means nothing, it's a glorified toy. Can't we just have fun without getting angry or exacting revenge or shouting to the other guy "YOU JUST GOT OWNED BY A BRONY! IN UR FACE!" It doesn't make me feel any better about anything, and it certainly didn't make the hater hate any less. I realise that I'm preaching the impossible here, which is why I choose to simply avoid the grief altogether and avoid online gaming like the plague.
