OOC Thread

Equestria is seemingly a happy, uncomplicated place where everypony is content and nopony is beyond the norm. At least, that's how it appears on the surface. Below that surface, things are very different. One such place is the Canterlot Insane Asylum, which resides in its own grounds just outside of the city itself. It has its own farm and recreation facilities, where patients are encouraged to involve themselves in. Patients are put in same sex wards, sharing dorms with other afflicted ponies, and group therapies are encouraged. This makes it a different place entirely from Canterlot's Criminal Asylum, which is situated deep below the Canterlot Caves and is where violently insane patients are kept. The Insane Asylum is more like a hospital, the other, like a prison. The owners of each are at odds with each other.

Which brings us to the problem. The owner of the Insane Asylum believes that those ponies who suffer from mental illness should not be treated as criminals, instead that they should be encouraged to play sports, work on the farm and in the laundry, and join art workshops. She does not take those who are criminally insane, just those who are troubled. While there are padded cells for those who have outbursts, these are rarely used. The asylum is totally self sufficient and does not need assistance from the Princesses. The Criminal Asylum, however, is dependant on assistance and donations, and is fast growing and losing money. The owner suggests to the mare who runs the Insane Asylum that, rather than him closing the Criminal Asylum and releasing the dangerously insane to roam Equestria, that the two institutions merge and they both be joint owners.

The owner of the Insane Asylum is appalled. She knows that the stallion who runs the other institution has views which conflict violently with her own, and that he would consider himself to be the sole owner and not take her views into account. She wants to prevent this happening at all cost... however, the problem with the Criminal Asylum being short of money still exists. Something must be done; the ponies of Equestria either do not know of its existance, or choose not to donate. If the citizens discovered the existance of the Criminal Asylum, there would no doubt be an outcry. What must she do for the best?

Glory was worried. She hurried towards her office, wondering what Joy could possibly want to talk to her about. Glory was the Head Doctor of the Canterlot Insane Asylum, and responsible for the day to day running of the mental hospital. She divided her time between her work and her home up in Cloudsdale, where she lived with her mother. Glory was a rarity; a pegacorn which was a very rare result of a coupling between a unicorn and a pegasus, and she often thought of herself as a freak. This was what had led her to study as a doctor of mental illness; she felt that she'd like to help others also labeled freaks, but in their case due to some troubling illness of the mind. In any case, Glory thought, this could be serious, but whatever it was, it could not be allowed to interfere with the running of the hospital.

~~~
Joy was the owner of the Canterlot Mental Asylum, and a trained doctor in her own right, however the administrative duties left her so drained that she had hired Glory as the Head Doctor to run the asylum in her absence. There was the normal issues of the asylum as well as the worry about there being too many patients and not enough doctors. And there was this new problem...
The pale pink unicorn turned as Glory hurried in. "Hello, Glory," Joy said. "I'm sorry to have to call you away from your work, but this is rather important. You know Dume, who runs the Criminal Asylum, don't you?"
Glory nodded, tersely. Yes, she knew Dume; the green earth pony stallion was harsh and cruel to his patients, who were far more dangerous it was true than those who resided in the Mental Asylum, but Glory felt that there must be a better way to deal with the criminally insane rather than treating them like wild timber wolves.
Joy continued. "The Criminal Asylum is running low on funding," she said. "He proposes that we join forces and run the two places as one."
The lavender pegacorn stiffened. "We can't let that happen," she replied, with determination. "I know how he treats the patients in his hospital."
Joy nodded. "Two minds with but a single thought," she said. "I knew you'd agree with me. We'll have to hold him off for as long as we can. Anyway, there's a lot to do today, I'm sure; some new patients to see."
"That's right," Glory replied. "Well, if that's all, I'd better go and sort it all out."
Joy nodded, and Glory hurried off.
Grand Finale hurried to check in the new patients, running late was rarely a problem for her, but it seems it happened on the most important days. "hello doctors, Im terribly sorry, My sister had trouble getting t oschool today, but I am here now" she said, tired from galloping all the way here. "I do hope the patients havent arrived yet." she said, unloading all of her papers she would need for the day. She didnt have much experience with medicine, but it was the best job she could find while her parents decided to take a spur of the moment trip away from home. for 4 months.
Golden Age walked with the group of patients whom he had arrived with, not speaking a single word the entire trip, his mind occupied on events that happened years ago.
In the last few years following the Crimean War, Goldie's mental health had deteriorated rapidy. He began to stay in his tent all day, trying to sleep or pacing back and forth in his limited quarter space. He was recently discharged after tackling one of his own men in broad daylight because he was wearing a long trench coat for picket duty. It took 6 stallions to pull him off, all the while he was repeatidly proclaming his fellow soldier as a "Russian bastard" and kept trying to release himself and stab the pony with whatever he could muster.
Now he was here, in an insane asylum. He was almost sent to a criminal Asylum, though after his case was reviewed, which showed mostly a life of optimistic happiness and generousity to those he loved, they deemed him only "mentally troubled" and "unfit for duty". The right side of his mouth had a small twitch to it, which was the result of anxiously trying to bite open hundreds of cartridges in time to avoid being stabbed with a bayonet. It was through these stressful situations that the process was forever lodged within his brain and nervous system.
He finally turned his attention to his surroundings. The place looked like a nice building. It was absolute heaven compared to the hospitals of Balaclopva.
"Looks like a decentt building" he said softly
Eddie Silver arrived to the mental asylum, while the entire trip Eddie was constatnly looking around seeking a perfect chance to escape while on route to the asylum, but with no success since the patients were escorted by gaurds "i cant believe this...this...THis shhh Eddie dont yell...this cant be the end, this IS the end Eddie, and ill tell you it gets worse before it ACTUALLY does yeah? what?"
Eddie Silver, a 17 year old thieving pegasus, he is responsible for maybe less than half of the theft related crimes in Manehattan, mugging, breaking & entering and pickpocketing, but he is not sent to the asylum for that, since nopony knows hes a thief.
Eddie had planned and executed a hate related crime on a party for the rich ponies in Manehatten, Eddie threw a few molotovs through the windows to make them escape the fires started in the building, thats when Eddie started beating the rich folks with a bat, 4 were injured.
Gaurds were called in and Eddie tried to flee the scene but didnt get far when he go tackled to the ground and restrained.
Silver refused to say his name to the authorities but they did find out that he's still a colt, a social worker (or a psychiatrist) diagnosed that Eddie Silver suffers from Dellusions, hatred, minor hallucinations, paranoia and schizophrenia all from his childhood,
Eddie refused to be sent to the asylum, he requested to be executed while yelling manicly "id rather be dead than in a cage", when the judge decided he should be mentaly treated and sent to an asylum, Eddie cussed and threatened the judge out as he was dragged out of the court room.
Eddie was sent to the criminal asylum due to 4 confirmed critical injuries he commited and arson, he was considered unstable.
"i hope i lie my way out of here or imma...shut up or they will hear us, oh yeah yeah good thinking Eddie" Eddie kept talking to himself in whispers
Vinyl sat on her bed, in her room, staring at the wall ahead of her and focusing on each minute crack and following it to its end before switching to another. She found that it was a way to calm herself and take her mind off of her troubles. She had just woken up from another nightmare. Her dreams were plagued with the memories of her parents' deaths and the thoughts of the perpetrators chasing her down.
She lay there, in her bed, waiting for Glory to come
@@Pripyat Pony, ((This post is mostly to define -what- he is in the roleplay, so I set up boundaries for myself that I can stay within later on. So it might be a little long. Tell me if there's something I need to change or have forgotten.))
Steeleye had been a doctor for a long time, in a manner of speaking. He had served in the Canterlot Royal Army, being assigned the role of medic in his respective squad. Disastrous casualties inflicted while fighting some of the more dangerous threats that Equestria had suffered and the horrors of war had shunted him into a leadership role. Thankfully, that period of his life had ended a long time ago. His specialty was not in surgery or potions. Instead he was excellent at identifying the problems that afflicted his patients. That meant he could accurately define what wound or disease was afflicting his patient, as well as -how- to fix it. However he could not neccesarily put that cure into practice. In the dimension of mental illness, which was largely unexplored in Equestria, there was a lack of clarity and detail which irked him. Too many conditions were grouped under the same name. A host of symptoms and quirks were herded under only a few officialy recognized names.
Considering this, trying to clear the fog and murk associated with mental health was a task thought to be tedious and overly complicated. This was why it had remained inprecise, because no pony would bother to study it. By bad luck or some administrator's malicious intent, Steeleye had been shunted into the under paid and disrespected duty of cataloging and discovering new mental illnesses and treatments. Well, that was how Steeleye tended to think about it. The truth was that said administrator had possessed remarkably good judgement and assigned Steeleye where he could do good for Equestria. As much as Steeleye despised his job, he did remarkably well with what he was given. New disparities in the mind were revealed to the medical community, often with what caused them and how to rectify the problem.
In his third year at this, Steeleye was still the cliche underling amongst his peers. The wages were horrible, both monetarily and emotionally. They barely paid him enough to afford a run down apartment. Whats worse, he had stopped trying to attend medicine conventions. He was mocked and goaded every time he had ever gone. The one time he had acquired a booth, some bitch with a pink mane and a balloon cutie mark had vandalized it, ruined all the effort he put in. He'd tried to get her incarcerated to the Criminal Asylum, but apparently she had friends high up the ladder and he'd been sharply rebuked. This was, of course, how -he- saw Equestria.
Some of what he thought was justified, though not most of it. True, he was underpaid. That was due to funding issues. Mocked and disrespected? Perhaps. But for all his knowledge he still didn't realize that more often than not those that did it were trying have fun and joke, not with malicious intent. The incident with the pink mare had actually occured, but it had been a true accident. Party cannons and what not. The harsh reprisal he'd gotten had been straight forward, on the other hoof. So, you had one hard working but very embittered stallion constantly shifting through paper work, sketches of the brain, and testimonies in one dark corner of Canterlot Insane Asylum. Perhaps due to his soldiering past, he occasionally handled the rougher patients when they went overboard. It wasn't much of a challenge.
What -was- a challenge was the possible merger of the two Canterlot Asylums. He knew much about both. One he worked at, the other he had... visited often. One of his old squad mates was incarcerated there-in. While Steeleye had gotten out of the combat with a couple of scars, that mare had acquired wounds on her soul. What crime she had actually committed was kept secret from Steeleye, but he knew that it was likely mass murder. The guards and Asylum staff there described her as one of the most brutal inmates, quicker to kill than the blink of an eye and utterly mad in the head. Her cell was covered in scratches where she had tried to bite the walls with her teeth. Steeleye visited her for two reasons. One was because he cared for her as a friend. The other was that she tended to calm down when he was around. With most any other pony, she had to be restrained with a couple dozen chains bolted into solid rock. Alone with him, she usually quieted down. Oddly enough, she liked to cuddle him like a foal's stuffed animal. She'd return to insanity when he left, but it generally made her more sedated for a few days, This didn't work all the time. His most recent visit had earned him a bite scar on his left ear.
Things had gone well until about twenty minutes in, something he had done had set her off. They'd been lying there for a few minutes, silent, when he sneezed due to some dust. In the ensuing tussle, she'd attacked him and tried to gnaw his ear off, almost succeeding. After fifteen seconds or so she snapped out of it. Seeing what she had done she started to wail uncontrollably. Guards had tried to extract Steeleye from her presence for his safety, but they were attacked with such ferocity that they had to retreat. After a couple of minutes Steeleye was able to calm her down and make her fall asleep. His ear had been repaired by a nurse after her left. That was two days ago. A letter had told him that his friend had become increasingly more violent after she had woken back up to find him gone. They were having to consider ending her life for the safety of the other inmates and guards.
All of that was burdening his mind as he worked. On one hand, he would be close at hoof if she needed him, in the case that the facilities merged. However she would be able to rip most if not all of the patients and staff at the Insane Asylum to ragged shreds if she got the chance. That same statement was true for alot of her fellow Criminal Asylum inmates. There were no other feasible alternatives. Releasing all those psychos onto Equestria would have horrendous results. Euthanizing the inmates was not an option by Royal Decree as well as general morals. The citizen population wouldn't help, that was what was causing the problem in the first place. Options for decreesing the total number of prisoners were all distasteful at best. The most feasible, but almost most horrendous was to let all the prisoners out of their cells, then lock them in the caves forever. With that many killers in one place, soon enough they would kill each other off until only the most powerful survived. Those few whoe remained could be executed in secret without much fuss.
With a heavy heart, he selected his daily and weekly report to give to Joy, owner of Canterlot Insane Asylum. The daily had to due with how lack of blood flow to the ears could cause hallucinations of noise: hearing things that weren't really there. The weekly was mostly statistics, income, expenses, number of patients recieved, discharged, and so forth. There was also a death toll, listing how many and who of the patients had expired. Thankfully, deaths were few and far inbetween. Almost all of those were due to poor health or internal issues. Suicides and Murders in the facility's records were below two digit numbers, eight if he remembered correctly.
Entering her office after a short trot, Steeleye carefully opened the door and stepped inside. "Ma'am," he said softly, unconciously blushing behind his ears and on his cheeks. His friend in the Criminal Asylum was just that, a friend, though a dear one. He'd had more romantic feelings for Joy for quite a while now though he tended to bury those under heaps of paper work. "I have the report for today and this week. I've... tried to make them easier to read, as you asked." His ears flicked down, blush deepening. "I'm... sad to say.. but the patient in room B-7, a pegasus stallion by the name of 'Clay Hoof' died last night. He died of..." He flipped through the pages. "A... heart issue. His blood was too thick, couldn't get the blood around fast enough. So he passed while he was asleep. I don't think it was painful. He was getting on in years... so perhaps it was to be expected, unfortunately as it is."
((OOC: Wait, just how did this end up being 6500 letters of IC??? Dafrig... Anywho, basically: Described his past a bit, established his job (paperwork/research), gave him a personal stake in the current issue, and a bit of association with those around him.))
Jolt was pacing back and forth in the Insane Asylum staff room. The idea of new patients to treat always got him excited as it meant he had the chance to help ponies be the best they can. However, it also filled him with worry as he knew that some patients were more... erratic than others and may hurt themselves or him.
"Hello doctors, I'm terribly sorry, my sister had trouble getting to school today, but I am here now."
Jolt smirked at mare's frenzied behaviour. "Hey, no worries." Jolt said. Joking, he then said, "You seem like your more worried than the patients."
The pay wasn't great for working at the mental asylum but Jolt's love for the job and the chance to experience first-hand the chaos of a hospital kept him a loyal employee. In the moment before he was assigned a patient, Jolt took a moment to think on who he might get. 'I wonder if I'll get one like Blossom again. She was fun to work with but it's a relief she's gone. Being buried up to my neck and then sprinkled with water everyday did start to grate.'
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As you can expect, Glacier was not particularly happy at being incarcerated in the Criminal Asylum. Then again, no-one is going to be happy when being marched down dark corridors, prodded with spears and yanked by a leash when you stop. Usually Glacier would be a your throat if you restrained her amd causing the slowest death physicality possible. But her knowledge of violence taught her that, when out-numbered and out-gunned, just stay silent and go with it.
A single, long leaf was wrapped around her front-left leg and was dirtied with the blood of various animals and her own. Glacier tried not to put weight on it but being forced through these corridors left her wincing in pain everytime that leg touched the ground.
Eventually, she was halted in a bare, shadowy room. A guard gave a sharb jab in the ribs to Glacier and gruffly warned, "There. Stay. Don't move. Wait."
Glacier had some time to think about her potential future experiences in the asylum. 'Hmm... this a is a setback to my plans. By the time I'm out of here, if ever, I'm going to have lost all my combat prowess. I'll be back at square one. Unless there's fights in here... This could be an interesting experience.'
The doors the to criminal asylum flung open yet again as another patient was dragged in. He was a lot less co-operative compared to the last one, continuously grabbing at the leash around his neck or the tight leather strap around his mouth. And when he wasn't struggling he was letting out a low growl and snapping at anypony in his field of view. His violence had already caused him to get a few bruises and a cut on his leg, presumably from the guards. He didn't care. They weren't getting a thing out of him. After about five minutes of struggling they threw him in a room and walked off. As soon as the let go he ran at the door, violently assulting it in an attempt to get out. When that didn't work, he simply turned and sat facing the far wall.
~HistoricallyInaccurate~' @, @@Grand_Finale,
Glory, the Head Doctor, watched the new arrivals enter. She sighed with relief when the nurse, Grand Finale, took immediate charge of registering the new inmates. There was good stuff in that one, something which the asylum sorely needed.
"Good work, Nurse," Glory said to Grand Finale. "I can leave this with you, yes? Any problems, just give me a call."
Glory thought to herself that this year was going to be a difficult one, both with the news that Joy had given her and with the sheer volume of patients to deal with. It looked as tho one on one treatment was going to be nigh on impossible. This meant that doctors would have to deal with multiple numbers of patients; Glory sighed. She had a huge amount of work to get thru today. But if Nurse Grand Finale would take over the signing in of the new patients, then she would be able to go and visit Vinyl early. If the mare had had another nightmare, this would be all to the good.
@,
Joy looked up, her harrassed face melting into thankfulness when she saw Steeleye. "Do come in," she said. "More admin work? I am grateful for all you do for the asylum."
At the news of the death of a patient, Joy looked deeply sad. "That's a shame," she replied. "He was one of the easier patients to deal with and a long term resident. He used to love working on the farm with the cows." She sighed, heavily. "But sometimes, patients just don't get cured, they end up staying here for the rest of their lives. All we can do is try and make their lives as good as possible."
Which was why, Joy thought, there was no way on Equestria that she could consider merging the asylum with the Criminal Asylum. No way at all! Dume's views were completely the opposite to her own, she could not allow him to have control over her patients!
@, @, @@Eddie,
Dume watched coldly as the newest patients were being brought into the hospital. Much as he would have liked to delegate, lack of funding for the Criminal Asylum meant that he had to sign new patients in himself.
"What do we have here, then?" he asked the guards bringing the latest inmates in. He looked them over. All crazy, all dangerous... the only thing to do was to lock them up and throw away the key, not really, of course, but he wished he could. They couldn't be cured, the only thing to do was to protect the public from them.
The last patient of the group to be dragged in on the end of a rope was a dark purple unicorn mare with a mint green and black mane and tail. Her horn had a metal ring around it; this was an anti magic band which would subdue unicorn magic. Pegasi generally had their wings bound. The mare was named Jay, but the one in control at the moment was Jinx, the evil creature that lived inside Jay's head. She screamed and swore at the guards who dragged her, swearing revenge and to have each one cut into a thousand pieces.
Dume scowled. More crazies. Still, that seemed to be all for now. "Put the others in separate cells," he said, of the patients not yet dealt with. "I'll get names and illnesses from you guards; after all, these are animals. They wouldn't even know to tell me."
The lack of funding for the Criminal Asylum angered Dume. It was alright for the Princesses to demand that the psychos and dangerous criminals of Equestria were locked up away from the public, but the amount of bits he got from them for doing just that was pathetic. Something had to give... his only hope was to merge the place with the self sufficient Insane Asylum.
Whispering through the door broke Jolt from his daydreams. 'Crap! The new patients must've arrived already. I need to get going!'
Jolt put a pen in his mouth and rushed down the stairs and towards the reception where the new patients were being signed in. In his rush he reached the sign-ins in a very short amount of time. He stopped before going through the door to regain his composure and put the pen into his mane. Jolt opened the door and walked towards Finale.
@@Grand_Finale
"Sorry if I'm late Miss. Finale. Did I miss anything? Jolt asked.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Glacier giggled slightly. 'Hehehe. This stallion looks irritable. They say first impressions count. Let show him what he's dealing with.'
"Hey! Down here!" Glacier shouted to Dume. "You know an animal is any organism that consumes organic material right? You're as much an animal as any of us!"
A particularly burly guard gave Glacier a smack to the leg with a spear. Thankfully, it wasn't her injured one. Another, slightly scrawny guard tried to pull Glacier towards her cell but Glacier, before leaving, stared straight at Dume and said, "We're going to have some fun times later. I'll see you next time. Oh, and make sure you know the definition of a word before you use it as a derogatory."
@,
Dume stared right back at Glacier. Not replying to her, but speaking to the guards with her, he said, "Some animals need to be muzzled. Get right on it, will you?"
He turned to the guard dragging the other mare. She had stopped fighting and was now looking about her with a look of pure terror in her eyes.
"What's with this one?" he asked the guard. The guard shrugged. "Name of Jay, or Jinx, depending on which one is in charge," he said. "At the moment, Jay is, which is why no trouble."
Dume replied, "Great, a split personality. That's all we need. Put her in a cell and use restraints if necessary."
Another sharp blow, this time to the neck, put Glacier to the floor. Brutish hooves wrenched her face into the air and a set more placed and over-tightened the muzzle onto her, causing her sharp teeth to pierce her gum. She was dragged, silenced and bleeding to her cell. The steel door swung open and Glacier was pushed in, the shadows in the cell enveloping her in their inky embrace.
Well. This could've gone better and slightly less painfully. At least our dear brute leader knows what he's dealing with. But he seems different to what one would expect. I'll have to quiz him later.
Eddie gave up on trying to flee, so he was calm more or less half way to the asylum.
a gaurd touched Eddie trying to escort him to the asylum and his cell but Eddie shaken him off "GET OFF!! i know how to walk, i know how to walk since i was 2 years old" Eddie stared into the gaurds eyes "im not mental...im just misunderrrratedBUCK!!...ey im chilling what do you want.... you'll touch me again ill stomp your gums down your throat and have a nice time watching you choke blood on emhahahah!"
"I...can't think of any..." he said softly. He placed a hoof over the right side of his mouth to cover up the small twitch. "Well...perhaps I do have one. If there are any other lads in here that have...shell shock...perhaps we should be placed close to one another?" He removed the hoof from his face and the brought the two together and began twiddling with them to ease his mind.
"I'll see if we have any patients with shell shock willing to gain a roommate, but until then, we will have to put you in a separate room until the doctors have given you a thorough check up" she said, scribbling his request down. "The security colts will show you to your room now. And please don't hesitate to call me if you have any problems" she says with a genuine smile
