Do pegasi foals continue to fly?

Someone kept pointing out to me Pound Cake continues to fly even in the comics and the book series, so I was wondering:

Do pegasi foal just continue flying when that get older or do they just stop? In the second episode of season 2, we see fillies that seem really young flying about, but they were older then Pound Cake. When I heard that, I was curious and kind of saddened at the same time I guess. It seems like even the youngest of pegasi seem to fly naturally or on their own despite their weight/height. It doesn't seem the case for unicorn foals since even fillies at Sweetie's age don't use magic. (Shown that even Twilight had trouble at that age)

I'd like to think that the comics are a different kind of canon to the series.

Though given Pound Cake's unique ability to fly at such a young age he's either a prodigy or this ability will die down at some point.

It wasn't even just Pound Cake that had. I remember seeing a pegasus version of Berry Pinch and another filly at Luna's return flying (uh, when she's not Nightmare Moon) They looked too young to be fly, much younger then the CMC or the schoolhouse children. Probably the same size as even Pipsqueak.

That is a confuseing concept considering Scootaloo still needs to learn how to fly  and she's a 'kid' where as Pound cake is a baby...

I know, it just makes it even sadder to realize younger foals fly first. Either A) She's really later or B )The parents just don't teach her? Maybe they just learn naturally too. I keep seeing tiny fillies flying and they appear rather small, not just a baby.

Are you talking about me?

Anyway I feel it is possible that a baby pegasus once he/she starts flying, will continue to fly.

There is another moment in season 1 where we kinda learn about flying for baby ponies. In the episode, Cutie Mark Chronicles, one of the bully ponies says that even his baby brother can fly better than her.

It's not much to go on, but if you think about it why would he go as far as saying baby brother and not just little brother. True it just to make Fluttershy feel worse about her flying, but it still should be proof that once they get started they well keep going.

If I may also throw in my 2 bits on this. I feel as viewers we still don't have a clear idea on how flying works in Equestria. It could be they do it right away like Pound Cake or if they need to be train like maybe Scootaloo maybe. Maybe her next episode well talk about it, but I still feel we need to know more info.

Yep you. I can't remember names ^^""

Well, that, or maybe they're taking Faust's ideas? They did use a few of her ideas earlier on and in Sleepless in Ponyville. Maybe its going to show something as a counter to those who bashed Derpy? Faust did say she originally planned on making her a handicaped pony. I'm not sure. (Though, Scootaloo flying with alternate sources of flying seems great. They got Tank to fly using a propeller, I'm assuming they'll do something that allows her access to the ability. In the spoils, she wanted to enter in the competition too as a carrier, maybe if she can't use flying, they'll allow her something with her scooter? )

I see this as an unfortunate example that the production staff doesn't care about the show as much as the fans, letting these inconsistencies slip by.

Or that Scootaloo just can't fly. Wherever this is true or not, I think I'll like it.

I guess in the comics, they explain on how pegasi foals can fly but I feel sad that Scootaloo can't fly but newborn foals can fly. It is a bit inconsiderate, but who knows she might learn to fly.

Maybe she'll fly another way? It would be pretty amazing to see her beat EVERYPONY using JUST her freaking Scooter. She's already pretty fast on it, why don't they just upgrade it to she can fly with it? Maybe she'll finally get her cutie mark! :o

It seems that all those ponies get their marks after something to PROVE that they are good at said skill. (I.e: Rainbow Dash's big race, Twilight's giant burst of magic, Pinkie Pie's party, Fluttershy's ability to care for animals, and even Twist's peppermint sticks.) They seem to show that they have to do something to prove themselves.

The same way a newborn baby is able to swim under water during the first days. I think pegasi and unicorns are able to fly or make magic too, as a reflex instinct started during the gestation period under their mothers' belly. Then this instinctives reactions are replaced by the development of the consciousness during the growth and learning states of social capabilities, regarding interaction and the learning to talk.

Although I don't know how babies are born in MLP, "Baby cakes" suggests that they are born under the same rules applied to our world.

Apologies for my english, it isn't my first language.

The comics don't necessarily represent the episodes, but my guess is that it works just like in real life; Old people can still walk, but it's not uncommon for one to use crutches or something similar.

I guess maybe she can fly, and continue to, maybe flying is a more natural thing for pegasi then we think, maybe its like walking idk.

Its kinda confusing, i dunno how cannon the comics are and haven't read them, but as far as pegasi and flying it seems to be pretty confusing to when they learn to fly.

When pegasi fly, they don't seem to want to stop. In the first season, the adult pegasi mostly stay in the air including Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash. Maybe its just like walking, but for Pegasi.

Just thought of something and I'm sorry if anyone already pointed this out.

But Twilight mentions that foal unicorns go through spurts of magic. Maybe it's the same with pegasi? Sweetie Belle can't do magic like Scootaloo can't fly, even though the two Cake foals can fly and do magic. It could be the case that they do it instinctively, but lose the ability as they grow up, and need to actually learn how to do it again, through training and exercise, not just through instinct.

Its possible, of course its just kinda confusing, because as far as animals IRL like birds they learn to fly at a certain age, but a baby pegasi already knows how to fly apparently.

Maybe they just have limits and can't fly as strong idk. Of course Pound cake does fly quite strong, but that could just be for comedy effect idk.

Adult pegasi do fly alot, but then again I guess they would since they have wings, although in later seasons Fluttershy and even Rainbow do walk a bit more often(Mostly Fluttershy) so they do use their hooves to get around if they choose.

I've still always thought of it as walking though for humans.

But at what age do fillies learn? Diamond said something along the lines of "you should have been flying LONG ago", and when I hear that, it makes me think back to the fillies in the Flight School and back at first season when tiny fillies fly. It was shown she SHOULD have flown much much earlier, as shown even by Featherweight and Rumble. (Rumble was in the tornado)

Well, thats where things get confusing, i mean Pound cake is only 1 month old and already is able to fly apparently, whether this is like some kind of surge like magic surges unicorns get, or simply the age that pegasi learn to fly is confusing, it kinda seems early to be able to fly, but then again we don't know for sure how pony lifespans even compare to humans.

However it does appear that they both don't have a ton of walking ability, so, its strange to have them already be able to fly.

Maybe S4 will hold some answers, of course I have a feeling it won't and will be pretty vague, but we might get some form of answers.

I always thought ponies lived very long life spans because in real life, that's the case, which is why the CMC are in high school. I thought that Berry Pinch pegasus was really young, so I'm guessing its not like Magic.

True, it could be just an outburst, but we don't have any proof that says, that a pegasus well have a flying outburst and than lose the ability. To me magic and flying are too different things. A baby unicorn just builds up magic and than one day it lets it out. While flying just happens for a baby pegasus, because the wings are apart of it's body and not charged by anything. Thats just what I think.

True thats a good observation, i think i get what your saying.

Unicorns having magic build up then be released randomly in surges makes sense, i mean they don't use it otherwise which I assume would probably not be good for them. So they have to get rid of it sometime.

Flying of course doesn't make sense to be a really burst or anything, its not an energy just an action.

Maybe you can compare it to when babies walk for a little bit, then fall over, except on a longer time period, but still the sorta same general idea as pegasi.

Oh and for the walking, i just meant I remember them crawling alot in the episode, could be mistaken though.
