I don't understand what makes them "eastern" or "western" though.

Eastern means Asian cuz they on the east side of the map. Western is America and Europe

It's also why the Middle East is called the middle East, They are sort of in the middle.

So some emotes are from Asia, and some from America/Europe? What?? How can emotes be from a geographical place?

They originated from those areas meaning people started using them there. Plus there are actually many Eastern emoticons we haven't picked up because our keyboards are different and they have different characters to use.

Basically, the emoticon style that was on it's side :-) , :-( .... was started in the west, where as the right side up ones ^-^   -.-   b^.^d were started in the east

I personally LOVE the eastern ones. ^.^

131375,

Eastern Emoticons are far superior, that's not to say I actually use them though..

The thing that kind of annoyed me about East/West is East & West relative to whose perspective anyway?

The International Dateline's perspective XD

Interesting. Where can I learn more about this? I tried looking up "emote origins" but couldn't find any good articles.

Well to be honest it was called East and West even before there was a Dateline. Its because it's how we always made our maps. Even old maps depict the Americas in the west and Asia in the East.
