A good story doesn't have to be a happy story always. Sadness, anger, happiness, suffer, luck. A pony has a lot of emotions, they go trough good and bad times. A good story doesn't need to start happy. A good story doesn't need to be end in a happy end. There are stories in the world that don't end happy, but still are good. Especially:

A happy ending is often expected, so a surprising unhappy ending can often take the emotions harder then a oblivious happy one.
