My display driver apparently just stopped responding for a minute there, made my screen go black.

That happens on my desktop if I way overclock my graphics card.

Display driver errors are actually pretty common on aging machines. At least in my experience.

It's not even two years old yet.

 

 I just want this one to hold out at least another half a year, then maybe I'll be able to replace it.

If you maintain it, a laptop could last about 3 - 5 years. Do you clean for dust pretty regularly? Sometimes heat can cause display driver errors.

 

I have to clean my laptop for dust every few months. You'd be surprised at how much can accumulate in there over time.

 I've cleaned for dust a few times, that does seem to help with problems for a month or two usually, so I'll do that again later then.

On an older laptop, it's just something you've gotta do every so often. My laptop is probably 3 1/2 years old so I know what you're going through lol I actually had to put a new application of thermal paste on it (which is a pretty annoying process on a laptop) and it's helped with temps quite a bit. I'm looking at temps maybe 10 degrees cooler, but it's still kicking it up to 60 when I'm watching a YouTube video.
