Sorry @SparklingSwirls & @DasCapschen,

[short answer] it's neither.

Spoiler

Longer answer:

It's "departure", is when we take the brake off to be pushed back or to taxi away from a self-positioning stand.

It's referred to as Standard Time of Departure

Depending on the size of aircraft (and the usable points of entry), boarding should commence at STD-x (for me that's normally -25mins)

Hopefully everyone is onboard and the doors can be closed before STD.

So, at STD we have permission to start (&/or push), I release the parking brake and off we go.

We record the TakeOff and Landing time for the "flight time".

We record the time when we take the brake off and put it on again when we arrive, that's "block time".

The time on the ticket is STD and then STA, this time allows for push back, start up, taxi, flight and more taxi.

Going somewhere where we expect a lot of taxiing (AMS & CDG) the allowed block time is a lot more than the flight time. Eg CDG 1hr flight vs 1h30 block.

Landing on 18R/taking off on 36L in AMS, you're nearly 3mi/5km from the terminal :D

That's what I meant with takeoff :P

I mean push back and taxi just takes a few minutes :derp:

while, as you said, boarding is like 30 minutes.

I didn't know what you meant with takeoff as it means something in particular to me regarding the times so I assumed you meant "when the wheels leave the ground".

I am sorry I made that assumption

From my side, although it's (usually) only a "few minutes" to taxi, departure and take off are two different times.

Because maintenance is based on the flight time and my time in control of the aircraft is the block time - this is what is recorded in my log book

Not much Shy, playing MTG.

That's encouraging Chrys

@Flutterstep favourite watercraft?

Hovercraft are cool as the "driver" is a pilot.

Ekranoplan is sort of a flying boat.

HMS Victory (schoolmates boat).

...and to be facetious*...

*Nice use of the five vowels, and in sequence too :)
