I was just playing GTA V and I hadn't been paying attention to any noises my PC was making. Well I paused the game and it sounded like a jet engine was next to me.

 

It was the CPU fan. 

 

That thing had to be running at 5,000+ RPM. I'm gonna get CPU-Z and see what kind of temps I'm getting. 

 

Or maybe not. I thought CPU-Z gave you temperature readouts xD

Actually I just got a Noctua NH-U9B. It's only a 92 mm cooler, but I'm sure it'll still let me OC. I was really looking for something that'd fit in my case, and since I've never handled aftermarket coolers, I don't know what to expect out of a 140 mm cooler. 

 

Anyway, this is what GTA V does to my CPU.

I think this thing runs hotter than my GPU now, which has done a fairly decent job of keeping itself down in the upper 60s to lower 70s. The MSI R9 290 is pretty awesome at being fast, quiet, and cool.

 

But yeah, with my CPU running that hot, it's no wonder I'm dropping frames like a bitch in that game. 

 

And you know what I just noticed?

 

That thing clocked itself all the way up to 4.1 GHz....what the feck?

 

I don't remember turning on the OC......Not with the stock cooler. This thing shouldn't be running faster than 3.5.

Holy crap! That's much better! Compare that against the 79°C I was getting earlier .-.

 

And like I said, Twin Frozr is awesome. GPU is awesome. I'm glad I spent the extra 30 bucks for the cooler, quieter GPU. Because I've heard the reference card from Sapphire is pretty loud and runs up to 95°C and I just don't have time to welcome those kinds of things into my life

 

Still there are no noticable performance gains or losses. I'm still dropping frames like a mofo. So it's official. Soon (and very soon) I will be getting an i7-4790K and a new motherboard. I simply cannot deal with this AMD chip anymore. It's been a good one, but it's time to move up.
