Yeah. I understand that if the parents don't get help, it's the kids that suffer. But what the system currently does is penalize those who are making the right moves and reward those who are making the wrong moves. My biological parents got $700 a month in food stamps. They sold them all for Oxycontin. Rarely did food stamps actually buy food for our family. Simultaneously, those who worked hard for their money have to pay taxes because......reasons. I'm not against paying taxes and I'm not against helping the poor. But I am against helping the poor people when they go out and do stupid things and don't want to pay the price for it. If you give someone $700 a month and they spend it all on drugs, you're not helping them. You're enabling them.

Well, you gotta love how the world works... Not  Sorry to hear what happened in your family in this case.

You know what Woona, I think you're on to some winner's there lol. It's just a shame the people in power don't see it in the same way.

Anyway, I'm exhausted. I'mma head off now =P G'night guys!

307837 any idea on actually getting them to do that and not just saying pretty please

Yeah. Don't incentivize them for inaction! If you don't want to actually do anything to better your situation, you don't get welfare. It's as simple as that.

We need to create programs that inspire people to better their situation. Not just give them handouts. They need to take advantage of programs like those mentioned earlier and then they can talk about things like food stamps and whatnot.

Yeah, but there's so little incentive in being a foster parent. They're hard to find. We instead need to teach adults to be better parents themselves. I don't mind it that I was a foster child most of my life. It's what got me to where I am. Besides, there are so many shady people out there being foster parents. It's unreal. But again, that's offloading someone else's problems onto a person. Not that children are problems, but they are expensive. I just think that if we're going to have government assistance programs, we need to use them to create legitimate people.

Instead of throwing someone in jail for a few months and turning him loose on the streets again once he's served his time, why not try to rehabilitate him? It would be more expensive in the short-run, yes. You'd have so many fees associated with it initially, but we're talking about a human investment here. You rehabilitate the person. Educate him. Help him to improve. Then you turn him loose. Someone spends time in jail and emerges a better person with a more solid mind, they are less likely to end up back in jail. That person no longer becomes overhead to the jail. If everything works out for him, he gets a job and stays out of trouble. He starts paying income taxes and there is the return on the investment.

I know we're talking about people, here, and not numbers. But by rehabilitating people with criminal histories instead of just waiting for them to screw up again and end up back in the system, but helping them to live decent lives, you create a more stable economy overall. Imagine if a program like that only had a 50% success rate. I'm not talking about murders, rapists, and drug lords. I'm talking about petty thieves. I'm talking about vandals. I'm talking about those in there for assault. Those people would no longer be an expense, but a revenue bringer. On top of that, you improve their quality of life. Their taxes feed into the overall government and that goes into paying for these rehabilitation programs.

But also imagine if we reduce the population of incarcerated individuals by 50% and we can reduce what we spend on prisons by 30% as a result. We save $19 billion a year.

But bleh. Politics :P
