Well, he wanted a modern (ie the last 3 years) and it had to be a feature length film.

and we had already done frozen for parts of the animation week last week. so as for feature length children's movies, we already covered the only one that was actually decent in the last 10 years, so he just picked EqG at random.

What was the only "decent" one? (I'm tempted to guess it's Frozen). didn't read the whole post

The last three years were kind of a weak period for animated family movies. I think a really good example for today would have been Turbo or Planes, which sparked a debate about self-esteem morals in animated movies today and also shows corporate influence and should start a debate on why these movies fail.

only that planes and turbo were both critically panned world wide, and not very good movies outside those loosely tied on morals lol.

And we already did Frozen, so for a modern/recent kids film he picked EqG for some reason.

Well, he wanted to start out the children's media thing with a more arguable show (as most the class doesn't have a brony background). As pure children's media, EqG is a 6/10, thus making for better debate. Stuff like planes would just be a riff session.

True story, for the final day in my first film class we were shown the RiffTrax version of "Santa and the Ice Cream Bunny" as an example of a bad film. The movie was made on a microscopic budget to promote a failing theme park in South Florida called "Pirates World".

The movie is so bad that it would have been nigh unwatchable without the RiffTrax commentary. The worst part is that the title characters are merely only a framing device for an adaptation of "Thumbelina" also made on a microscopic budget.

As for the theme park it was advertising, well, they're a condo development now.
